For everyone getting salty about the fact that Brennan broke his world to honor a Nat20, he didn’t. Yes, he said he had to change about 20% of his plans, but he still created a non-supernatural, scientific explanation, to explain the results of this roll. A story-line which, although I’m unsure exactly how improvised it was, was in part set up in the past with another ‘ghost’ sighting in the second episode. The results of this Nat20, when taken in the context of the subsequent story-line seems logical and completely fits into the world. Brennan is a top-tier improviser, and the subsequent story seems so organic and pre-planned that it doesn’t feel as though this roll broke the game at all.

A great moment that showcases Brennan's mental agility as a DM. I wish I had the chops to respect nat-20s like he does. Also, watching Grant play D&D is super entertaining. He definitely needs to do more "nerd sh*t" in the future
@chastermief8393 жыл бұрын
I see those first two statements in opposition. to be honest i think he overplays his "frustration" when his players roll well some times, i think he stretches it to a point where you can tell he's just hyping them and making them think they just scored a big win. It also gives him a lot of time to stall and think about how he can play out the scene to satisfy the player while keeping the damage controlled. For instance for this particular roll Rekha didn't actually get the effect she wanted. Brennan only honored the "ghosts are real" bit and gave them even more questions, and didn't give the PCs any of the information she was trying to score by having the ghost move through the hole. Do I dislike Brennan as a DM for this? Hell no. Because THAT'S what i see as mental agility. He subverts the premise of the request while still making the players happy. A worse DM wouldn't be able to come up with something on the fly, and they'd have to either scrap a ton of prep for the mystery or just tell the player, "No, you can't do that." TL DR yes, it does show of his skill and mental agility as a DM. But it's because of how cleverly he ignores the nat 20, not because he honored it.

people love gatekeeping and shitting on other people lol. very specific with how they want their players to play or dms to dm. everyone has their own way to play the game because it's just a game, and it only matters that everyone has fun. idk how some people miss that aspect of it so badly

This reminds me of a game me and my friend played where we had to basically role nat 20s to jump across a cavern because plot stuff needed to happen down there and accidentally all rolled nat 20s in a statistical anomaly basically making our DM throw away like half of her story and just info dumping via the villain who was shocked as all hell to see us there many hours too early.

For someone who doesn't know the context of this, could you explain? So the role was for her to figure out it ghosts were real? So why couldn't he just say, "You succefully found out that ghosts aren't real." Also isn't isn't a weird role? I feel like it would make more sense if I had the context
@gluttonousgoddess3 жыл бұрын
@@Jason_Bryant you say that, but they actually pulled that off in a newer episode. In essence, a bunch of bad guys from previous episodes got a castle or something, a natural reservoir of flammable gas, and set up a trap. The gang's task was to, y'know, escape, but Velma actually pointed out they could have sold the reservoir and made bank.

I am not satisfied with the provided context, so I will add my own. This is a murder mystery. They are all sleuths trying to figure out the mystery. It is supposed to be semi-realistic (the characters are all antropomorphic animals, so very much "semi"), so ghosts don't really fit well into the genre especially since they have gone to some lengths to remove spell casters using anything close to magic. That being said, this is a mystery set in a manor during a thunder storm, so the occult and ghosts are very much fitting for the theme, and several occurences previously in the show have hinted at or suggested that something supernatural might be going on. Daisy, Rehka's character, is in a Seance room, and she wants to see if she can use ghosts to get into a secret room without finding the secret entrance. She rolls a nat20, which in some campaigns is an automatic success. She didn't actually roll to see if ghosts are real, she rolled to get a ghost, whether they exist or not, to help her. An automatic success here really doesn't work if ghosts aren't real. So Brennan can either make ghosts real, tell her ghosts aren't real and make her fail despite getting a nat20, or let her succeed in some other way than making ghosts real. Brennan *really* cares about honoring nat20s. They are not automatic successes, you don't get everything you want, but they will pretty much always let you do something cool. So when faced with a nat20 that basically implies ghosts are real already, Brennan really has to struggle to honor the roll without ruining everything and I think he did a solid job
