At the time the revolutionaries still considered themselves British by nationality (Paul Revere never shouted "The British are coming!" for instance, what he actually said - not shouted, said - was "The Regulars are out.") It was more a middle finger to King George III and to the British Parliament than to Britain itself.

Because Britain continued to trade all over the world its accent changed(same with the New York accent) While the Americans typically didn’t have as much trade or interaction with other cultures. So the North American accent is actually closer to the British accent during the revolution and before. that’s why Shakespeare is largely agreed to sound better when read in an American accent as opposed to a British one
