"I keep feeling smaller and smaller". Those words, those lyrics right there! There are times that everyone is feeling a little bit "smaller". I think a lot of people can relate to that. And to hear about it in the lyrics of such a beautiful song is what makes you realise how in many situtations you may feel afraid, frigile, lonely. It's heartbreaking... but beautiful too!
@Crimson199773 жыл бұрын

I always interpreted it as how humbled he feels to have this girl in his life. Like she overwhelms him at times and he feels “smaller” because he realizes how much he needs her, how much he relies on her. The other people around him though say that he looks taller - I think this represents how a healthy relationship helps you to grow as a person.

A question: What do you get out of this song? This may be one of the most poignant songs for me in regards to relationships and every time I watch this, I am filled with both love for my wife and an immense amount of shame that I do not give, nor show, her enough love. I need her beyond a doubt and it is humbling that she continues to love an imperfect being like me. So what I get out of this song is how much I truly need the woman I have in my life. She gives me the emotional and physical support I do not get from the rest of the world. She is everything to me. When the world is critical, cynical of who I am (or who I 'should' be), she is a safe haven. It baffles me what she gets out of our relationship... Thank you to the National for putting into words what I feel. A side note: the old couple gets me every time. Love should be timeless and they illustrate that point.
@eg6civic929 жыл бұрын
+losttribe3001 Your words are touching. If I, as a total stranger, can be moved by them. So will your wife. Those sentences, you brought forth such emotion from minor key strokes. This is not to be wasted on a digital format. You will take her by the hand, sit down next to her, gaze deep upon her irides and repeat your expressions of appreciation. It may seem like simple words, unworthy of her eardrums vibrations. But within them she will see the fact, that for you, she is your utopia. Language is a powerful tool, but we are nothing but fools if unspoken... (I was a fool once. Sadly this song found an attachment to that.)

I feel like this is a rare love song because it has a lot of vulnerability in it. There are tons of songs with “I love you”, “I gotta have you”, or just praising the way the other person makes them feel. There aren’t as many love songs quietly admitting this sense of awe that the other person loves them despite all their imperfections. And “needing” his girl instead of just wanting her, missing her, etc.

I recently burned her an album and I put this song as the first track, because it is beyond beautiful and it is honestly how I feel on the days we are not together. These are some of the thoughts and feelings that rush to the forefront once you have the courage and intellectual honesty to admit that you're fortunate enough NOT to be the hero or central actor in your own life story. When all of your recollections in looking back on your life start with "Remember when...?" addressed to this special person, you're truly fortunate, indeed. Love creates a space where all three components of time (past, present, and future) are all simultaneously in play. This special person is the repository of all of your hopes and fears, the springboard at your feet and wind at your back when you don't feel like you have either the courage or the strength to press forward, the one who cannot run to you fast enough in your time of need. True comfort comes when you realize that you also hold the same standing in the other person's life, as well. The visual imagery of the video captures this last sentiment, at least in my view, rather nicely. Very nicely done.

To everyone that's criticizing the video as 'boring' and 'uninspiring': be creative. I don't know how can you not be creative if you're a The National fan, and listen to the lyrics and having them in your head. (I feel like I'm driving when I'm listening to Conversation 16 i.e.). They way the figures blend into each other and the lighting and their expressions (not one of them smiled. Maybe the girls near the end did.) they mostly voice affection (or just closeness?) through touch and movement. Be creative and be open to it. I don't know what you look for in videos, but I look for the little details. The way when they hang, one woman slides her hand down her partners back, then up again. How the elderly couple seems happy, peaceful, content. Just open up and don't expect a plot. Lemme rephrase: don't expect. This is the only video I've really liked from the National and to me the best one. (I just miss it wasn't more diverse - races, perhaps a gay couple in a big shot? But if it wants to convey the ballroom dance tone, it got that alright.)

@@Malumbrus can’t believe you responded, we got back together for awhile and life happens you know. I still see her around sometimes, maybe we’ll try it one more time but there’s this other girl that I’m now into. I have some choices to make, I will say that I was going through a dark time at that point in my life.
@Malumbrus4 жыл бұрын
@@eddie0415 I hear ya. I'm there right now. Spent the day with her yesterday. She has a new boyfriend but she says she is confused and isn't sure if she wants to be with him or go back to me. But right now she hasn't come back to me.
@eddie04154 жыл бұрын
@@Malumbrus hey man I know the feeling sucks. Two years ago I was what 15, unsure of everything. I’m in a bit of a dilema myself as I like this one exchange student who’s going back to Europe at the end of the semester. I want her so bad, but I’m not sure if it’ll work. I told myself that I’ll only live once and that I should go for her even if she’ll be gone, who knows we could do long distance. She’s a year older too but I figure I got a shot. And about that girl of yours, try to be a friend, supporting and maybe (hopefully) she’ll realize just how good you were/ will be in the future. Good luck brother, being in the dark can only last for so long eh? Love from Calgary- Canada.
@Malumbrus4 жыл бұрын
@@eddie0415 Wow you're young haha. I wouldn't worry too much about girls at your age, they'll come and they'll go. Just have fun. Eventually you'll find the one. If you like that girl then go for it. It may not work out in the end especially considering the situation but at least you can have her for a little while. The woman I'm talking about is my wife. To me she is the one and somehow I lost sight of that. Right now I'm just trying to live my life and be as good to her as I can. You're right, maybe she will see the good in me and come back. Thanks for the kind words of support. From Ontario, Canada!

This song is unlike every other in it's category. It's not an individual story of one person trying to impress another for love, it's a celebration of love itself. A love story for all people, and it's utterly heartwarming. No complex story of relationships or 'love at first sight' lyrics, just pure emotion. I don't want to make stupid puns, but this song may very well be a love letter to love itself.

I heard this song on a bus from Scotland to London, on a BBC Radio show. the presenter explained that they had a segment involving a "changing track", where you can ask them to tell a story from your life and play your chosen song that relates to your story. someone told a very sweet story and then they played this song. i was sitting beside my boyfriend and waiting for the bus to start, and i recognized the band as the national, but i couldn't place the song. I'm glad I found it. It's too sweet.
