John Green sure speaks in a rapid manner. However, the beauty of U-Tube allows me to backtrack the video as much as I need to. The ability to do so actually makes learning from Crash Course video more efficient than sitting in a classroom.

HeavensDemon966 You can turn the speed down too. Or if you are like me, you can turn it up to x2. I trained myself to cram faster in law school. It also helps in lectures to have a quick ear. The trick is to start at a speed you can do and keep notching it up as you get comfortable.

Kate C. Thats interesting. Where i come from this is considered the old discredited school of History. Modern history teachers (again, where i come from) focus almost exclusively on the "why" and don't care too much if you misremember an event by a few years or a decade. And you're right, that approach is very conductive to the appreciation of History.

In the spirit of accuracy (leaving out the political innuendo), the seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts does not nor ever did have the picture of an Indian with the words in a 'bubble' saying: "Come over and Help Us". That seal was used by the "Massachusetts Bay Colony". It was used from 1629-1686 when it was 'annulled' and then again from 1689-1692. So, yes it was used by the MBC, but has NOT been used for 324 years. To quote John "... the Massachusetts seal WHICH FEATURES (which infers it is the current seal) an Indian saying: "Come over and help us". (emphasis added). John, mispronouncing things is OK in this format, but not giving false/misleading information.

1. The first English Settlers came to the Chesapeake area (now Virginia) in 1607. 2. Both the European and the Indigenous traded goods that they had in surplus to those they did not. The English were happy to give up iron utensils, tools, guns, woven cloth, in exchange for furs and, especially in the early days, food which the Indians could easily part with because they had plenty. 3. John Smith is important to the Indian and European story because when he left Virginia for England after being injured in a gunpowder explosion, things between the Native Americans and the English immediately began to deteriorate. 4. The English went back to stealing the indians crops and also began stealing their lives (they killed a lot of the Indians) 5. In 1675, Native Americans launched their biggest attack on New England colonists in what would be known as King Philips War.

I met the Pueblo Tribe not too long ago and saw them greet the sun on the first day of the year. It was below zero weather and they were performing their rituals in loincloths and not much else, while we stood there in 4 layers of winter clothing freezing our behinds off. They followed mercantile theory, which basically said more land = more wealth = more power. They were in a constant war with France, so they took America to generate more work and thus more goods and thus more wealth. The whole plan was to just get as rich as possible so that they could be better than France.

Have you ever thought about translating the your subtitles into Spanish? The canned ones that the video does with an automatic translator aren't the best and sometimes miss out on context. It's also phrased English vs natives. In reality a huge percentage of native people fought on the English side. Entire tribes converted to Christianity and joined the colonies. There were also towns created for natives that choose to live like the English. I think it is so sad that these natives stories are always forgotten about when taking about the arrival of the English.

Where did you learn so much and where do you work out of? I'm an American currently living in Spain and love the history here. 5:15 "This was such a concern that in 1642, the Massachusetts general court prescribed a sentence of three years hard labor for anyone who left the colony and went to live with the indigenous people" I was thinking of using this info for an essay about Native American history comparing it to current events- has anyone found a different site that confirms this?
