First lentil burger I had was at Byron bay 76. Carpet snakes would catch fruit bats in trees back then. There was a lagoon stretched from the pass to just short of the beach entrance to the caravan Park.. tail end of cyclone Tracey wiped it out.

Australia looks good but the down side is heavy... sooo expensive, shops are closed at 17h00 and it can be very boring in the evening. Shopping is disastrous, ridiculous speed limit, apart from the beach and driving/walking around...nothing to do. Absolutely all is forbidden, you even have to wear an helmet to ride a bike, hotels are just ok and you need to be starving at the restaurant food court style, plastic chair rules. I had a look of a backpakers, for the price of a decent hotel in Asia, we offer you a bed in a smelly and noisy dormitory. Nonexistent health system (maybe for animals). Australian are friendly, they face very heavy taxes and an air monopoly that does not allow them too often to travel. The success of Bali is obvious to them, it is the only cheap destination and especially without restrictive and ridiculous law, which allows them to blow a little. As soon as you arrive in Australia, the tone is set. Between immigration and customs you think you are entering a country but you are in an open air prison. By the way everyone in the same uniform, shorts and tee shirt surf style.
