I honestly don’t see the point of making excuses for it. Like who does that help? I find other people’s natural hair beautiful, but I don’t like my own, I think I look weird with it, and cutting off my damaged hair to go natural 7 years ago made me feel even worse about it. Yeah my health issues might contribute to how slowly it grows, but the way I feel about my hair is my own issue and therefore something I have to tackle on my own. My mom didn’t know how to deal with my hair and I never bothered with it. That’s my own fault and no one else’s, and as embarrassing as it is, it’s okay to admit. Making excuses for it is only hindering ourselves from accepting the issue and learning how to grow from it. The only thing we’re doing by making blocking ourselves from that journey of self love and acceptance that so many others have already been on.

I have had female family members from Gen X and older, make disapproving comments on my choice to go natural with my hair. It took me over a decade to undo the damage THEY caused to my hair during my childhood with all of the "Just For Me" child hair relaxers every few months, the constant tight styles, the hotcomb or the curling iron. I had to learn on my own, how to care for my natural hair and even till this day, my edges are thin. I am pregnant with my first child and If I have a daughter, her hair will never go through what mine did. Not chemical relaxers, tight styles or heat damage! 4c hair care does not take long; trying to create the perfect elongated curls is why it takes long…if shrunken 4c hair was socially acceptable; I think convenience will increase.
@HiHowAreYa3 ай бұрын
This is so true. People with straight and wavy hair can walk out the house with their hair as it is because it's seen as the standard. If that's the case for them, why must people with type 4 hair stretch, iron, and blow out their hair to be socially accepted? This is why I have a problem with the term "shrinkage". Like, your hair isn't "shrinking" it's reverting back to its original state. Beautiful tight coils. It's how your hair grows out your head. If it was the standard to wear "shrunken" type 4 hair, nobody would be saying it takes so much time/maintenance/upkeep.

The media has traditionally showcases curly hair (and the girls who wore it) as uncontrolled, not put together, awkward, etc. Sometimes it was obvious, a lot of times, it was hidden. Ex: Anne Hathaway in Princess Diaries, Carrie bradshaw in SATC hair got straighter the more desirable she became for Mr. Big, Julia-Louis Dreyfus purposefully made her hair as curly as possible in Seinfeld after a convo with her agent abt how executives thought she was hotter with straight hair. I love your take on choosing a style that suits you. I do think that natural hair community is (in some ways) obsessed with length. I get it, because typically long hair is associated with femininity. However, I personally have been natural since college (2010) and have had short and long natural hair, locs, a low fade/shaved head, and now I'm growing my hair back out. Cutting my locs off and going to a low fade allowed me to let go of the idea that my hair has to be long for me to look nice. Plus, honestly, I looked the best with the fade lol

I think the "natural hair looks broke" mentality is funny. Some women think hair, makeup and name brand clothing make them look older and sophisticated. When you are young, you want to look older. When you are older, you want to look younger. Human nature for literally all women.

Embracing my natural hair came with ease for me, and mainly because of the representation I had at home. My nana was hair goals for me, my momma was my biggest supporter, and my dad and brothers were my biggest hype men. That ease did come with bumps😂 Like accepting my hair texture for kinky coily, instead of the loose curls I wanted them to be. Let me say I’ve come a long way from my teens into my 20s and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My hair is so versatile, and with social media I’ve become my own stylist. And you damn right its cheaper!😂 Learning to do my own hair has really saved me some shmoney ya hear me😂😂 Besides its all a money thing in the beauty industry cause natural ain’t cheap either. I also can relate to the switch up when it comes to some kind of celebration. For my high school senior pics I got a 30 inch, 13x4, frontal wig. Mind you im a natural girlie and was new to the wig life. Terrible, terrible, terrible. The itch was insane, the build up of products was insane, the bumps and breakouts on my forehead was insane, AND I got a big ass head and a lot of hair…the wig didn’t even fit😂😂 the stylist tried but failed smh🤦🏾♀ fast-forward to graduation I did my all time fav style, a braid out. Besides getting that cap on my head, it was the right choice. I still served face, the fro was eating them up, and I felt like myself.

Wigs for me are fun because I’ve been loc’d since 2011 and miss some of the hairstyles I wore as a cyber goth chick back in the day. I like how my natural hair looks as well as how I look in wigs. I love the idea of having a permanent hair style (which locs give). I have super fine 4a/b hair so even with locs I don’t have to use a ton of products like my super thick haired counterparts. I always hated relaxers and would just keep my hair braided as a kid. I love just spraying my hair with rosewater in the morning, oil my scalp, and go on my merry way. It’s so interesting seeing how people respond to me based on my hair. From my experience, people find me more approachable when I wear an Afro or my locs and appear more “high maintenance” when I wear a body wave or silk press. When I first went natural at 16 it was jarring how many older black women were shaming me about having “nappy hair”.

@@CamrynElyseI think it’s about the time, not the representation for young daughters and loving their natural hair. The issue I sometimes have with the natural hair community is that it sometimes gaslights ppl when you complain about the time it takes to care for 4c hair. It is beautiful, but to say it doesn’t take a lot of work to keep it up is just not true. Sometimes I do envy the women that can just wash their hair and quickly blow dry it in 15 minutes and throw it in a ponytail and go. My hair has to be detangled and dried in sections or braided; a wash and go causes so many knots because my 4c hair loves to tangle up on itself…….so leaving my hair in its 4c state without stretching is a big no no. Locs are cool but aren’t personally an option for me because I have low density hair so I’d look scalpy unfortunately. I end up wearing my hair braided up under natural textured wigs (either blow out textured or braid out look) because at least it requires less daily upkeep 😩 not because of me hating the way my hair looks.

I would love to wear my own natural hair, I'm sure I can speak for other women as myself who experience "medicated" hair, cancer, thyroid, alopecia etc... Because of the condition the meds left my hair people sometimes ask me why don't I just shave it off. I always respond by saying because of the shape of my head, and because I chose not to look like my "twin" male cousin😃, I rather rock a natural-looking wig. When I was younger rocking a wig wasn't a thought only the elderly wore wigs, we, my generation, adored our relaxed hair or natural textures. I had a debate with a guy friend yesterday who said men only value women who wear their natural hair and women who wear their natural hair value themselves more. I asked him WFT does valuing yourself has to do with hair. I get that some women hate their natural because of texture or shrinkage but I don't see why anyone should devalue themselves because of what society or social media thinks. I know that was random lol, maybe because I'm ol school, I can't believe that with everything that's going on in this world, hair texture is a conversation. Great video.

This was a really well done video. I especially relate to the fact that most of us did not see adults wearing natural hair styles for special events or even on an everyday basis so we see our natural hair as something related to childhood. If more grown women wore their hair natural in a myriad of styles as adults maybe little girls would feel the need to slap on a wig or relax their hair all the time.

hi, thank you for your video, for my part I have kinky 4c long hair (middle of the buttocks). and for me yes, it rejuvenates me and yes it takes time. I understand your arguments, but for me, we are not all equal when it comes to routine. for example as I said I have fine 4c hair so my curls are very tight, they are often tangled, and if I wear them without having done any styling (braid, twist out etc) that's the dead. there my sisters who have thicker hair and more in the form of waves than curls (still being kinky) spend less time detangling it and can go out casually without doing anything to their hair etc. Also, I think it's a delusion to believe that kinky hair can come out of the shower without doing anything. In countries where black women are present they always have a way of wearing their hair to protect it, and even when it is let down they are styled because it is easier for manipulation. so no it's not being complex or anything else, especially if you want long and voluminous hair, having rituals and techniques is the best. finally I have a wig I don't feel obliged to wear it (it's a closure that I put on without glue), it's wavy and not frizzy because otherwise. what is the point? In my opinion. a wig allows you to change your head. If it's to have the same thing, well, I might as well keep my hair. especially since thanks to this I no longer straighten my hair (which damages it). even worse if I had a long and voluminous frizzy wig I would be self-conscious about my hair, because I would compare the wig to my real texture. I hope it wasn't too long

@@EM-cy2ml i like your perspective! i definitely think that different hair types are gonna require different kinds and levels of maintenance for sure. my hair stretched is just shy of tailbone length, which i grew from being ear length and even i noticed the changes in routine and time i takes to care for my hair on a weekly basis! i think the point i was trying to make in the video is that people should be realistic about their hair goals, their lifestyle, and their texture to determine how they wear their hair. otherwise, you run into a lot of unnecessary grief in trying to deal with your hair. also, for the wigs part, just to clarify, my statement was specifically referencing those that say they wear wigs to protect their natural hair with no self hate involved…i just feel like we would see more kinky curly wigs if that were truly the case. however, i do understand wearing wigs to switch it up from time to time because i’ve been exploring wigs recently and like how it can be a convenient way to switch things up. i will say that i do question how “switching it up” all the time can truly be considered switching it up. for instance, how can you “switch it up” from your natural hair if we never actually even see your hair ever? thank you for watching!!🩷

I embrace being able to switch up my hair. My hair is very long & thick and curly. Each curl does it's own thing and frizz is apart of my life. I don't feel childish wearing my hair in it's natural state, but it definitely gives "bohemian or Farmer's Market Chic, Diana Ross in the 80s". That's not always the look I want to rock everyday for every event. Once or twice a year, I get my ends trimmed and get my hair silked out. I'm approaching my 40s & my hair is about 35% gray with most of it in the front. I am not the biggest fan of salt & pepper hair, but I love silver hair. So, I wear a short silver wig everyday to work and take it off when I get home. The wig has saved me so much time getting ready in the morning. Unlike with my natural hair I don't get a lot of questions about my racial identity or whether my hair is mine because 1. It's short 2. It's a coarser texture than my natural strands. Growing up I wasn't the biggest fan of my hair. I didn't learn to love my hair until I got relaxers and wore it long and straight. People were obsessed with my hair. I notice that my hair is easier to manage when it's in a straight style. If I wanted a pixie cut or wore a short curly cropped hair cut, my hair would be very easy to manage as well. The reason so many of us don't all have a short cut that is easy to manage or rock locs is because both of those types of styles have been associated with masculinity. So many women across racial lines desire long hair. Having long hair or being able to demonstrate that you can shake your ponytail or even grow a ponytail makes us feel like we're "that" girl. I have never seen a cheerleader, majorette, volleyball player, ballerina or figure skater with short hair or locs. Anyway, it's 2024. Sending love to all Black women who have hair & those who don't and the ones who don't like/love their hair. We've been put through too much. We have to stop trying to be everything to everyone. The best thing we can do is love each other and respect their style even if they prefer straight, wavy, loose curls or blonde hair. And the girls with those styles need to respect the sistas with short t.w.a's, locs puffs, twists, bantu knots, braids and frizzy curls.

No woman on this earth appreciates their hair like us. Stop complaining. Appreciate the time we have to invest in loving ourselves. Take the time and build the character that only black women can have. We are the ONLY women on this earth that are capable of these characteristics. Shalom

Interesting how people pay so much money to look younger but despise looking young with their hair

Got my hair relaxed at age 5. Went back to natural at 18. Relaxed again at 30 because I thought it would be easier…chile a year later I’ve cut all the relaxer off and going back to natural. I can’t believe social media made be believe relaxers were better.

I’m white but I don’t understand why they hate the look of their natural hair. I understand that it can be hard to take care of and you know history but it’s literally so pretty I love curly hair and especially when taken care of. Much better than wigs imo it just doesn’t really look right usually idk why

Since I've been growing out my hair and embracing/ loving the hair that grows out of my head, a select few people have asked me if I'm "okay." My hair is in mini braids and I style it in buns or sometimes I just wear them out, but regardless, I think I look nice. It's wild to see so many aunties checking my wellbeing because I don't have a 28in bussdown anymore..

I love my hair. I can make it easily do whatever. Tight curls. Lose curls, waves, straight. It's versatile.

I have been wearing my hair in two braids, it has felt so freeing. Im single, but I’m older, so I just stopped caring about everyone else’s opinion.

Ladies, i think y'alls natural hair is absolutely stunning. My friend Laquadra wears braids at times, but she wears her natural hair a lot, and although she's ALWAYS beautiful, i think she kind of glows with her natural hair. Especially when she wears it pulled back, and it's this gorgeous curly thick poof style ponytail...makes me wish i had her hair. I can see why it's y'alls crown 👑

lipglosss was onto something and everyone ignored it bc she essentially said she still gets attention even when her hair isn't styled

I think it so interesting the negativity black woman place on our hair. I’m a millennial so I just missed the explosion of the internet and social media. I also live in a rural community and simply wasn’t around wig and weave culture. I have tried them once or twice and thought it looked weird. So it was never something I could do. I don’t think this struggle it limited to black women. I’ve noticed white women deal with this too. Especially white women with curly hair or thin fine straight hair
