I'd say thinking, no rather being and living in my head more which leads to overthinking, which increases stress and on and on. It's a vicious cycle. So I'm opting to think and act faster rather than taking too long with my thoughts and fucking myself up.

@@kemation369 Yeah, I'd say that's pretty common. I don't know if it's a new thing but I feel like our inner dialogue has just got louder. When I speak to older people, I just can't imagine them going through the same motions in their head before every decision or action or statement. Seems like they think less, in a good way.

I recently commented on your video about overthinking, but it all makes sense now. I’m 25, and since I left school 8 years ago I always had this feeling of “not doing enough” which was driven by the usual hustle culture bs. This feeling only became extremely amplified when I started my own cleaning business back in February 2021. In the past 3 years I haven’t even had more than one week off of work consecutively. I’ve worked most weekends and sacrificed far too much good family / friend time out of some underlying fear of losing clients / appearing to be unreliable. I can honestly say that probably 90% of days I have felt exactly how this video describes due to both extreme physical and mental work (extremely anxious, sleep issues, low mood). Back in July my work van was off the road for about 5 days and I initially almost had a heart attack at the thought 😂 I was heavily anxious for a few days about my initial fears (losing clients etc), although once this passed I actually realised just how much of my life I had been sacrificing. My body felt better, I slept better, I wasn’t anxious, I was able to actually just relax. Just like a comment posted in here, I too thought the “burnout” feeling would pass and it was just me being a bitch. I also thought those who would tell me to rest just didn’t get it. I am all for giving it your best, but the law of diminishing returns definitely applies here. Shit work is not your best, and my biggest eye opener is that before I started my business I would have loved to be where I am right now, but it’s made me realise that money / achievements etc hold absolutely zero value when you cannot enjoy them. Big rant, but glad to know I’m not the only one. I thought I had a massive problem for a long time. Thank you Joe 🌟

Rarely comment on YY, but lots of your points resonate with me highly. Figured I would share my situation in case someone can relate. I’ve been working in the health care profession as a speech therapist for the last 6 months (recent graduate from M.S. program). I’m 25 years old and within the last months have been noticing serious negative effects of over working (talk all day as a professional working with people, lots of paperwork for every client, lesson planning, etc.). My sleep is shit, my anxiety is higher than it’s been in ages, mood at the start of my day is low, etc. My partner is largely keeping me going…she’s badass. Just like most young people I was/am caught in this “make a fuck ton of money” and “don’t be a pussy, the burnout feeling will pass” mentality. I still struggle with it. It was a very gradual, long term decline though. I didn’t notice changes right away, but about 5 months into my job it started to become very noticeable, and has only gotten more notable. The feelings aren’t just disappearing. It’s true, don’t keep doing the same shit and expect different results. Within last couple days I decided I would start working 4 days a week to have a better work-life balance and let myself recharge. Money doesn’t mean shit when you feel like your going to have a panic attack, can’t sleep, and are in a shit headspace. Life is a never ending experience figuring out what’s important. Hug your partner tighter, reach out to loved ones, and having some fucking fun. I feel like we take this shit way too serious. Properly enjoyed your video, like always. Have a badass week Joe. Thanks for being so relatable, it’s easy when you are so genuine.

That was an interesting read and I'm sure a lot of people can relate. Sounds like you have the awareness to figure things out anyway, which is all that matters at the end. If you have a bit of awareness and a spare second to zoom out and look at things, I think most people can figure most things out. That sentence you used is the most precise way of summarising it: don't keep doing the same shit and expect different results. Although I am still guilty of ignoring that at times.

I had the exact same harrowing anxiety/panic experience as you describe at 2:41. I had never had a panic attack or anxiety in my life, then had an experience where I felt like I was gonna either go crazy or die. I got so freightened that I quit cold turkey caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and weed on the same day. Whenever I think of stimulants or drugs, the traumatic experience overrides all cravings. Going cold turkey on all those substances caused me to have 3-4 weeks of anxiety and it slowly faded away and there were less symptoms (although they sometimes do pop up, can't expect 10 years of addiction and damage to your body to be repaired in a few weeks). If you are able to quit, your life will get so much better. You just need to push through the first weeks and months of anxiety and side effects, it will get better.

Last few years I've improved myself so much, I'm in the best shape of my life! I've run a marathon, my 5k pb is 22:11, my resting heart rate sits between 43-48 when I'm at my best and for the first time in my life I have a six pack! The only thing is, now I can't stop. Whenever I stop working out and take time off I slip into a mad depression and feel extremely guilty for not working out. Not quite sure how to get over this but honestly I don't really want to stop I enjoy my life the way it is and I feel absolutely fantastic, I just can't stop 😂😂
@JoeDelaneyy
@JoeDelaneyy 2 жыл бұрын
Haha there is often a simple and a complex solution to a problem (among many others I'm sure). The complex solution for you would be to wrestle with the psychology of why you feel guilty/depressed etc when you don't work out and try to overcome it somehow. The simple solution is just to keep training haha. When I mentioned in the video about trying to be pragmatic about things, I think this is a good example.

At the risk of sounding a bit like Karl Marx (not my general political persuasion), it does truly baffle me that despite all of our technological progression, we still live in a world where 40 hours a week is the general working hours in developed countries (and much more in less developed). I suppose it's a whole separate conversation about economics and the costs of goods etc, but as a general point that has always confused me. I guess we just use technology to increase profit rather than reduce workload.
@ABC-ip6jq
@ABC-ip6jq 2 жыл бұрын
@@JoeDelaneyy TLDR: People who are no longer needed in a field moves on to create new fields that improve our quality of life. Instead of working less. I think the background to this is way more complex than "increase profit rather than reduce workload". First of, as you mentioned in the video, working hours have been declining. Also life quality has increased simultaneously. That's probably only possible due to the technological progressions we've made. Fewer percentage of people are actually providing necessities (food, shelter, etc.) to more people. Which is probably in relation to the technological progressions done in these 'necessities fields'. This have made it possible for people who would otherwise be working these jobs full time. To instead create new professional fields that provides goods and services that have increased our life quality. I guess the way to not "profit over reduced workload" would be to keep everyone still working in these 'necessities fields' but for shorter hours. Instead of them leaving and creating new fields and technological progressions. Which in turn would probably lead to no new professions and no new/very few technological progressions. Imagine today's society (and life quality) if that is what happened a couple hundreds years ago. When they made their technological progressions and everyone went "lets now just work fewer hours" instead of creating new professional fields. Obviously you can argue for the extreme in both ways, working all your wake hours for example. So there's probably some sort of balancing needed but that's not what I'm trying to get across. The thing I wanted to discuss/describe is instead, my take on why technological progression is not equals to fewer working hours. And why we probably don't want it to be.

@@JoeDelaneyy I believe you are right by inferring that capitalism is mostly responsible - however I’d say that the elements of capitalism responsible are the resultant costs of living and market demands, rather than employers having people work longer. If more people could afford to live on less hours, they would. The 8 hour working day was brought in around the world at various different time points, and it was introduced to REDUCE workload from the previously excessive hours that workers were subject to - 10,12,14 hour days. One exception being the introduction in USA during the Great Depression, where the reduction in work served to share the work among more people, rather than protecting workers from being abused. There does seem to be a shift away from the working week recently for many industries, with shift work and working from home becoming more popular. Who knows whether that’s a good thing though - as this has also had quite an effect on the housing market. Sorry for the essay

I can vouch for mental fatigue affecting performance in the gym. After I graduated I worked one year in a windshield factory, 300-350 reps of odd movements with 15-25kg windshields and other screens a day, I could still walk to and fro 45 minutes, hit the gym afterwards and then go clubbing with mates. Now I work as a neurological physiotherapists, working clients 8 hrs a day, mostly I just talk and give tips and such, I don't really exert myself physically, but boy, when I get home I'm spent, I can't hit the gym, instead do some 15 minute workouts at home and it's so much harder to eat right, sleep etc. I couldn't give a shit about seeing any of my friends more than once a month. Mental fatigue is a bitch.

I really liked the point about how doing less is usually more. I think that a lot of “self help” KZbinrs go through really quick phases of trying something for a month or giving a lot of temporary solutions to problems that are probably just symptoms of a bigger issue just so they can get more views or make more videos. You wouldn’t tell an alcoholic to take Tylenol for his hangover you would probably advise him to stop drinking right? So I think personally I’m going to try get rid of bad habits before I attempt to add more good habits like meditation and journaling so that I can concentrate more on building those habits. Thanks joe

In the context of building a new sports-tech startup this would seem counter-intuitive (hope my investors don't see this 😂) but I strongly believe I will be able to unlock way more success this way! Great video Joe, it honestly baffles me how similar my thoughts are to yours on this area. I journal a lot as a means of tracking my experience in the aim of achieving and maintaining a similar state to how you explain "the natural high". I quit caffeine for 6 months and found your channel whilst trying to find others doing the same thing when I was falling asleep daily and craving caffeine during the first week of withdrawals, but anyway I recently started drinking a cup of black tea or two a day again and found myself justifying the habit and desire in my journal, despite being aware of very notable rising levels of stress. I had a day where literally 2 strong cups of tea in the morning (probably totalling 80-100mg caffeine) completely ruined my day due to frantic thoughts and stress levels. It seems I developed such a strong tolerance from 10+ years of regular tea and coffee drinking, and the 6 months off made me incredibly sensitive. Anyway in short, I've decided that caffeine is simply not for me, I feel great again after a few days off, feeling much closer to the natural high again!

Yeah, I don't know if this is just a feeling or if there's any truth to it, but I also felt that after I quit my caffeine sensitivity increased way beyond what I would have expected. I felt like I had gone from being virtually unresponsive, to hypersensitive. Sounds similar to what you experienced.

I've just discovered your channel. I thought it was another fitness thing, but the content on here is on another level. You are shredded, smart and funny. Keep it up mate. One thing, do you read/listen to audiobooks? If so, what's your top 3 or 5.

Agree with the caffeine approach as I too used to abuse the shit out of it. Now I have one strong coffee after breakfast and that has me sorted for the day.

Bro I love this style of video. I'm forever trying to get my life to the peak of what it can possibly be. My main issue is fitting everything in. I train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu twice a week, lift weights twice a week, and I've also started training Judo once a week. I work 8 hours, I want to cook, eat clean, hang with my pals, chill with my girlfriend and play video games, and it always seems like it's a constant battle to fit everything in. But I guess that's the lifestyle that I've chosen, in order to be better than I was yesterday, and to keep getting better. Much appreciated on the hot tips in this video, my downfall is the mindless scrolling on Instagram, so I've set myself a timer on my phone that restrict the app after 50 minutes a day.

Yeah, there is a problem with me doing these videos that I might have to mention at the end of the series. Really, I want to just encourage people to make the changes that make the most difference to them/their situation. But in my efforts to simplify (to keep videos a digestible length), I am in danger of misrepresenting my philosophy/views a little and putting too much emphasis on "optimising". You reminded me when you used the word "peak". In practice, I think it's definitely possible to focus so hard on optimising, maximising, perfecting etc that it becomes distinctly sub-optimal. As an example, I think if you focus on optimising your training, you often end up taking a lot of the fun out of it, which inevitably has an effect on your overall results. Even focusing too much on 'balance' (a word you see a lot) is really just another form of perfectionism, which again ignores a lot of human factors. Hope I articulated what I'm trying to get at there.

yes the overstimulation makes us less sensitive to everyday activities so things like going for a walk, meditating etc. don't even compare to scrolling on social media, watching KZbin and stuff. I cut my social media usage by a lot I'm only having an issue with staying off KZbin.

great video joe. been thinking a lot about the overstimulation going into the new year. I catch myself frequently clicking through instagram/snapchat stories and spending so much mental energy to check them. yet i hardly ever remember them minutes after clicking. I think there is value in consuming less. thanks for the class video as always.

Completely agree with what you say about caffeine! I absolutely love coffee, worked in a Cafe throughout uni, and couldn't imagine a day without it UNTIL I suffered some panic/stress symptoms due to the caffeine intake. I still love coffee now but I treat my intake like alcohol - it's a treat not the norm. But some people are lucky and tolerate it a lot better than others 🤷‍♂️

I used to get panic attacks a lot and realised it was because my caffeine in take was causing heart palpitations which made it feel like a heart attack. I just drink decaf now and it stops the coffee cravings in the mornings and prevents the heart palpitations.

On the "over-consumption of caffeine", I would generalize it as simply "over-consumption". I, for one, struggle with binge-eating and tend to fall into a destructive spiral, leaving me in an apathetic mess, if I'm not mindful of stress and overall feelings of anxiety. It has gotten better as I work on it, but it's still my big demon and the thing that is "holding me back". Or, rather, a symptom of the way I tend to perceive things, which is often more catastrophic than the events themselves as they play out in the real world. I'd be interested in hearing your take on mindfullness as part of one of these videos, and how distancing oneself from that first impulsive reaction to things can be the key to leading a "good" life (at least in a somewhat Stoic sense). Great video, thanks for the quality content. Really enjoying the series :)

I can relate with those issues mate. Being mindful is important, for me I often overdo it and start over-analysing stuff, which then ends up paralysing me in a way. So I really do agree with the "keep it simple" and "less is more" point in the video... I suppose it's down to choosing the important things and not worrying about the rest.

@@kilibecher I feel you with the "paralysis by analysis" thing. Very much agree with your point and it's something I need to practice as well. Less thinking, more doing, and making sure that what needs doing actually matters. We got this, my friend. One step at a time.

Great video. I agree with the attention span thing. People don’t have less there’s just so many more distractions now. Being an old fart I had very little choice of things to do growing up. Watch one of the three TV channels, listen to music, read a book or go hang out with my mates. That was it. Now you have hundreds of TV channels, streaming channels, music apps, podcasts, gaming, mobile and console. Makes sense that the more choice the more time people take to decide what to do.

I can tell you right now an Isolation/float tank is the only way you will get to the peak feeling of 'in the moment' and focused, it is clinically proven to reduce the frontal cortex "chatter" that we have on a day to day basis, giving the brain more energy to stimulate other areas. If you haven't tried it i would strongly recommend it.
