I listened to the first volume expecting it to be a short story like so many before, until I looked at the duration. I was so happy there was a volume 2, then I Saw 3 on the playlist, rinse and repeat. I listened to five volumes in 3 days.. can't wait for more. Although I assume the Krakoatl commander plotline got lost between the pages.

About unfathomable cruelty. the atrocities of the germans in WW II was something the world of scientists was shocked of. They accepted that for less technologically advanced cultures but not of people from central europe doing it to people from their own area. Concentration camps were not an invention of the germans. The systematical extermination of unwanted people though was a whole new quality. Also the crimes of soldiers not only of german soldiers raised questions. The finding was, that some experienced cruelties just turns a switch in somebodies heads to a lawless attitude. Some are more resilient to that than others but it was and still is mind blowing. Many armies started teaching programs for their soldiers including psychological support in case somebody witnessed or had to do some horrible things. Some armies don`t. Greetings from germany.
