The NBA has finally rolled out it's long planned in-season tournament. Which boils down to nothing more than a thinly veiled sham to get LeBron more meaningless hardware, while coercing the pampered crop of current NBA players into actually caring about the regular season. Agreed 100%. The main issue with this, "in season tournament," is that it's so early in the season, which is undoubtedly a ploy to cater to players whose legs can't make it through a full season. The tournament would have been a good replacement for all-star weekend, with the teams getting in based on records, to that point. Instead, this is indeed a sham, designed to give perennial choke artists more chances at fake trophies.

I believe the in season tournament was created for the same reason the play-in was. To help Lebron get more chances at winning. Ever since he went to the west, he started missing the playoffs a few times. The league can't have that so the play-in was created. He may not advance to another Finals and the league can't have that. So this tournament gives him a chance to win something Jordan, Kobe, Bird and Magic never won. I will say that this generation of players ethics when it comes to basketball is pathetic. But I thought that this tournament was the best thing they possibly could have done for their fans. It spices up the regular season a little bit, and it gives a chance for fans who root for teams that can't win a championship that year, a chance to root for their team to win something. Like I am a Pacer's fan and I'm excited to watch the Pacers perform tonight against the Celtics. Because I know we aren't a championship team, but we are contenders for this. I think as an NBA fan, the fact they added something to the regular season, when we've been asking them to do something for years is nice. I do see your Pov though. I think I slightly disagree with the best teams being in the tournament, as we get to see them in the playoffs and they are title contenders. Versus a team like the Kings, Pelicans, and Pacers who aren't title contenders but are good teams. I disagree strongly I actually like the cup. I know you highlighted how Lakers were 4-0 whilst being mid overall but thats what i like. Because there is only played 4 games any team can get in. Look at the Pacers do you think them going 4-0 was rigged? They even had a strong group to go along. I truly think this is just what happens when the sample size is so small. Within the next 5 years we'll see a team that eventually misses the playoff make it to the semis that my prediction. The winners of this tournament can be anybody its fun especially for fans of teams that aren't gonna win the chip (like the Lakers or Pacers). The playoffs is like March Madness except you only have to overpeform/get lucky 3 times to win it all so upsets champs will be even more frequent. The groups were also revealed before Dame was even traded from Portland starting their rebuild. Lastly Jazz sure they’re bad. Not the worst though. The cup itself is a good idea in theory, but it was completely botched in execution (let's pretend for a moment it wasn't set up for LeChoke...). What I would have done is: 1) Make it an event that happens once every few years like the World Cup; Olympics; Euro's etc... so that way it retains its prestige. Things that are rare are valuable. 2) During those - let's say - 2 years of round robin play, a certain number games (lets say 8 every season) are marked as "tournament round robin games" (WITHOUT the fancy hardwood, etc...). These would be games where both teams are well-rested, they aren't doing back to backs after long flights, etc... 8 games a season x 2 years = 16 group stage matches. This way it isn't some fluky shit - you have to earn your place with consistent team play. 3) At the end of the 2 years, the points are added and a bracket is formed based on the positions in the tournament table - as is done in the playoffs. Like in the playoffs, 16 teams make it in. 4) In year 3: instead of the All Star weekend we have the NBA Cup. Single elimination. 4 games over 2 weeks to win it all - held in a single venue like the all star weekend like you would a tennis major championship. Make it a whole event. 5) Establish a really glorious theme and some really majestic music to mirror the UEFA Champions League. Something where its like "Wow man this is so special, I really want to win this...". There has to be prestige. Paint the court in shiny gold and have the golden theme everywhere - IT HAS TO SCREAM PRESTIGIOUS so that players will kill themselves during the regular season qualifying games trying to participate in the final event because its so special. 6) The winning team needs to ofc have a big fat cash prize - not this paltry 100k bs (wtf is 100k for an NBA player?...), but more importantly there needs to be some sort of visual reference on their uniforms and home court that signifies that they are the holders of the NBA cup. Golden lettering on their uniforms - their home court imbued with golden theme, etc... so that it is CONSTANTLY in everyone's minds that these are the NBA Cup winners.
