I don't mind if people bet on sports and I've even considered it from time to time, but what really bothers me is how all the major sports lately are aggressively trying to push sports gambling on casual viewers. If someone wants to gamble on games then its something that they should seek out instead of seeing an ad every three seconds while watching a basketball game until they finally break. It's taking advantage the growing economic instability of working class people looking for a way out. It feels like we're moving away from sports existing for the sake of game and towards a future where sports' main purpose is to be a means for people to gamble away their meager earnings so that these betting apps can walk away rich. Either that or it's a house of cards waiting to fall apart once one too many people bet their kids college fund on a parlay and the government shuts it all down.

I've read the stats about my country where similar pushes are made both by the national league and related medias, and the overwhelming majority of betters are not in a position to afford bet AND most of the betters are actually addicted (reminder that gambling is the only non drug thing recognized an addiction by world's health organization). About 30% of national bb leagues are sponsored by betting companies. It's frightening.

We've had sports betting in the rest of the world for decades and we have occasional problems.There has never literally been a single top football player in the UK Ever caught match fixing or betting. The problem is in lower leagues where there is less scrutiny and more incentive to do it

In France Handball players have been caughtin 2012 AND 2024. Still playing and making ads on TV. In Italy, soccer serie A has known a scandal stomr (not an "occasional" problem). Look also at Argentina and Milei's guidelines. These are leagues with scrutiny. Bet=mafia. That's all there is to know. Mafia always tries to get legal ways to continue business. And even without fixing games by having players underperforming or buying refs, bet companies are a good way for them to launder money. Look who owns what.

Tbh that’s kinda expected (idk abt other sports) but in the nba it’s not unlikely that players have an off night, or a specific team guards them a certain way (Steph is a great example, before his slump the nuggets guarded him way better than anyone else).
