The German cut is actually English spoken. The movie is made by a German named Wolfgang Petersen who also made the famous submarine movie "Das Boot". The German cut is the version that they showed in Germany in the cinema and is different from the USA release. It was much darker and ominous in tone. They changed some scenes for the international/USA release. The German cut has some weird differences. E.g. The famous theme song by Limahl is not present in the German Extended Cut. The opening dialogue between Sebastian and his father is longer, giving more context about his family situation and what happened to his mother. The voice of Teeny Weeny (the guy on the snail played by Deep Roy) is completely redubbed by another actor, even though the original actor spoke all lines in English just fine. This is especially weird to hear if you know the actor from other movies. There are some musical changes, most notably the scene where Artax sinks in the Swamp of Sadness has no music in the German cut, which makes it even more terrifying. I do hope they release the USA cut on 4K as a standalone as well, because that is the one I grew up with. This boxset contains both version, which is great, but it's just to expensive for me.

The original book The Neverending Story is a German book (Die infinitee Geschichte) and the film was wildly popular in Germany because of that. The German cut of the film is also longer than any other version - hence why it’s in German in this set. Edited to add - looks like the German cut still has an English audio option. We all win! I mean, that is if you want to spend $200 for it. 💀

Actually this is a GERMAN produced movie, shot in the Bavarian studios in Munich, the same studio where was shot Das Boot in 1981. That is why you see German versions: they are the original version of that movie. Why do I write my comment? Because … I visited the studios and I sat on Falcor’s back where they shot Bastian flights when I was 15. I was born and raised in France, I was studying German as my first foreign language in high school and we went on a school trip to the Bavarian studios in Munich because of the success of this movie. So I will definitely buy that boxset because the German 4k has not the director’s cut version and has no version in Dolby vision. Only in HDR.

Several different people that have KZbin channels have discussed this already today. I am in agreement with most of them, which is $200 for a special collectors set of this is utterly ridiculous. I worked out $75 in advance for a special collectors edition of North by Northwest, one of the greatest Alfred Hitchcock movies, and one of the greatest thriller movies of all time. Never-ending story was a somewhat entertaining family movie but hey, we all love what we love.

The differences are mostly with the music! You have to watch the German cut. I feel it's superior. It's in English audio but examples of the German is the actual book cover is in German. But the audio is English. Music was changed to be more fun for American audiences as suggested by Steven Spielberg.

Just ordered this from Diabolik. A perfect excuse to try out PayPal's Pay-In-4 option for the first time 😂. I think I watched this movie once over 20yrs ago in school after a test, on one of those TVs that had to be wheeled in on a cart. And even then, the scene in the swamp still comes back to me every so often. That's POWERFUL for a children's movie. Very much looking forward to revisiting this. The German cut does have full English-spoken dialogue BTW, and is apparently darker and heavier in theme than the US cut.

Yes, it's a lot of money for a movie but most of that $200 is going towards what's supposed to be a screen quality replica of the book. That kind of reproduction isn't cheap. On top of that you're also getting 2 version of the movie, art cards, tons of extra features, etc. I've paid more for less so this was a pretty easy get for me. Also, not to spread FOMO, but if this is something you want now is the time to buy. Once these hit the secondary market you'll likely have to pay twice the price.

I can remember back in 1984, going to the theater and the disappointment that the screening was full for the day. The music was playing in the background making things worse. I think the imagery in the movie makes you want to buy this. I think as children there is no other movie that scars you as much as Never Ending Story. Maybe Return to OZ, but that movie is on another level.

For those who are unaware of the original German cut, as is the directors origins. The cut involves a musical score that has deeper emotional elements to certain scenes where the editing extends far better exposition. The U.S. version tries to uplift the emotion or force certain scenarios: ref# Artax death scene, for example.. it's subtle, but if you are intimate with this film, you'll notice. For me, German cut is the superior version

Peordered. While it was directed by a german and it was filmed in germany, as far as i know it was filmed in english, since most if not all the actors are not german. I grew up in germany and when i was in elementary school (in the 80s) we visited the film stodios in munich where the neverending story was filmed. We saw many of the props and were even able to ride on Fulcor (sp?, Fuchur in german) the dragon in front of a blue screen. It was amazing, always a fond memory. It was the same studio where parts of Das Boot was filmed and we were able to climb through a set piece of the submarine used in the film.

Also, when checking out, please check your shipping options because I almost paid for shipping until I noticed a selection for free shipping underneath it. This is one of the most important movies in my film journey. It holds a very special place in my heart. I was knocked on my heels a bit when I saw the price, but when I investigated a bit more it became very obvious how special this release actually is. The German cut is quite a bit different from the other cut and they probably didn't want to have to try to re-create it in English. Not only is it longer, but the score is also completely different with a completely different composer. Doing it in English would have required going back and remixing the whole thing, and who knows if the elements for the extra scenes even exist in English still. When i saw that box set I was so excited. Just the packaging alone is amazing. Then I saw the price and I was less excited. It probably depends on how good a month my business has in September. Maybe I'll have a "Please buy something from me so I can buy overpriced physical media from halfway around the world" sale. 😂

In my opinion, It seems like boutique labels release average or bad movies with new remasters in special edition box sets or collector's editions with high price tags. I know it is subjective what is good or bad but when some of these movies you can find for $10 on bluray it seems a little excessive.

I think the amount of discs combined with amount of items in the packaging with the supposed high build quality makes up the $170 cost. International shipping is international shipping. I try not to factor that in to cost. After all it’s not the company charging you that for the product itself. That being said, I don’t have the emotional attachment to this movie to spend that kind of cash on it. I’ll probably wait for a standard 4K. If YOU do have that emotional attachment to it though I don’t think it’s worth missing out on, buy it.

It took me 5 seconds to decide to pre-order this. Yes, it's expensive, but it's WORTH it. Especially if you live in a world where everything new is horrible and completely without artistic merit. Which we do. Then there's also the nostalgia factor. I was 7 when this came out. The perfect age to experience it for the first time. And because it was released in a time when kiddie films were really adult films, the Neverending Story remains endlessly rewatchable regardless of age. I suppose it would've been nice if they'd included Michael Ende's book as well, but having THE actual book as well as both cuts of the film and pretty much all related special features ever made......you'd have to be a cheapskate not to buy this!

I would have to spend $200 for this: Over 70 minutes of Deleted and Extended Scenes. I already own the other 2 versions of the movies on both Blu-ray and 4K. If i have extra money to burn then i might. I don't see that happening anytime soon though. The price is really steep on this one. My other question is on those extended/deleted scenes have they even been remastered? Do they look like an old workprint back in the 80's? I am thinking it will look pretty rough when we see them.

I love this movie, but I can't justify its price point. I'm partially concerned that if it sells super well at this price point, it will encourage this kind of pricing in the future and I can't support that. It's just magnitudes beyond what's reasonable.

If it had ALL THREE neverending story films then it might be worth $200! Wow! Great set though.
