in that case it kinda makes some sense i guess? easy for the olds to get in and out of, slow because you know they're gonna be going like 63 in the left lane regardless, and big car to cash in on the nostalgia they have for their 1976 buick whatever the fuck. all that combined with the fact that the segment has basically evaporated at this point and it has virtually no competition and i could actually see this car being modestly successful for a while.

My thoughts exactly. Old people were mostly who bought the outgoing Avalon anyway.
@Fastar76
@Fastar76 Жыл бұрын
Here is my reason for this car: Since this is to replace the Avalon which is mostly bought by older buyers who wanted a softer ride and not really care too much about power and speed. So this seem to actually make sense to me (I know my idea isn't going to be a popular one), the older buyers normally do have issues with their legs and knees, etc. My parents for example likes driving CARs, and not SUVs, but with their bad knees, it is really hard for them to get in and out of their cars, so having the Crown as a Car, but with higher seating position, it means it would be much easier for older buyers to get in and out of the vehicle. Also give it a car feel and not an SUV that many may not want to own. One thing I starting to notice more and more is that as we advance in technology and sell more high tech gadgets, it is harder and harder for old consumers to use. Many aren't good with smart phones, many aren't good with new techs in cars, etc. Even some covid tests are depending on apps. While I understand the focus is younger people, but something should still be considered for the older consumers. Just my 2 cents.

This makes perfect sense to me, older folks that want easy access but also still want a sedan. If you look at the B segment crossovers, the ones meant to appeal to 20 something's as a "beginner" car, they have been historically been bought by older people. Why? Because they are small enough to live with but tall enough to get into. Your KIA Souls, Jeep Renegades, Chevy Trax... All of those are meant, except maybe the Trax, to appeal to a youthful market and yet most of the time when you pass them I bet the occupant isn't younger than 50.

I live in Japan. The Crown is one of the most iconic Toyota brands in terms of its history, so the SUV-like styling was a big shock to the car scene here when it was announced. But honestly, after seeing a bunch of these new Crowns on the street, I think it looks rather elegant and certainly worthy of the Crown moniker, especially on the trims where the plastic wheel arches are body-coloured and not black plastic, like the new Subaru WRX.

It's not weird, it's bringing back the proportions cars had back in the 50s and 60s as opposed to modern sedans. People like the comfort of sitting upright in a seat rather feeling like they are on the floor, and they like a view of the road and head room. This car is a happier balance for someone who wants a more comfortable sedan rather than an SUV.

This seems like an amazing car though. Not every car has to be fast and well-handling. The crown has loads of rear passenger room, a massive trunk, modern tech, what more could you ask for? It uses the interior space very efficiently
@damham5689
@damham5689 Жыл бұрын
I never got the "fast" part. Maybe what? 10% of the people really want a car that goes 0-60 under 5 seconds, but probably 90% of drivers dont care if it breaks the sound barrier or burps loud exhaust sounds. Does any of that even matter when stuck sitting in rush hour traffic, driving to work, taking the kids to school, soccer practice, grabbing groceries ? I think most want decent safe performance and handling, nice quiet ride and good mpg. IMO. Same for off road use. Id bet 80% drivers dont go off road beyond occasionally parking on a grass lot or lawn. Now thats not saying AWD is not needed, I love awd especially in snow or rain, but how many really use it to crash through desert valleys or bust a creek trail in the deep woods ?

If you're not really into cars, that's fine. But this is at least $41,000 (+dealer markup) for something unexceptional; if unexceptional modern tech and space for passengers and cargo is all you want, many other cars have these very ordinary features, so just buy a used whatever for way less. Personally if I was going to throw that sort of money down I'd want the moon on a stick. Besides, one of the major problems with the design of this car (there are many) is that the silhouette is sporty and sleek, but the gigantic wheels and sheer bulk are definitely not; it looks like it is supposed to be fast, but it definitely isn't.

Hi! 32 year old Crown owner here. First off, the car he’s showing is the most boring colors available. I have a 2023 limited, in a beautiful exterior red with light macadamia interior. I got it because I drive a LOT for work, so I wanted great fuel efficiency, roomy cabin and luxury feel comfort without the high luxury brand/ EV maintenance costs or plug in limitations. I have gotten so many compliments since buying it and people asking me about this model. This is my favorite car I’ve had, including bmw 530E and rav4. His opinions are irritating and unnecessary. I was mostly looking at high end crossovers but none of them had this gas mileage. I was considering a Lexus but this gave me the same cabin and everything I needed for better price. My passengers have called it very roomy and comfortable. I love it and highly recommend this car. Also, who cares what the Home Screen looks like if you use Apple car play? Tell me you’re a green bubble guy without telling me… This Dude is such a hater lol calling it weird, strange, dull and typical while also complimenting so many of the features. Why all the shade? Ps I’m tall and in shape. So no, not only for people who are old, overweight with arthritis. I just value comfort. Smh

I like this thing - the styling is underrated... It is simple, but the surfacing itself, the subtle curve of every inch of it - is smooth and organic and really far better than almost anything out there for under $100k - almost like an older Jaguar. It's unique, it's weird, it's very Japanese. It seems like a cool, comfortable cruiser for the stealth wealth crowd (Lexus money for a Toyota badge) - it's almost like a sedan Land Cruiser.... Clearly not in terms of intent or capability, but in vibe and who might actually buy one.

I think the high riding sedan concept will work with the crown. The issue the Volvo, Subaru counterparts had was you had to pay a premium to get it. It didn’t make sense to pay that much more when for almost the same money you could get the wagon body. With this, you don’t have to make that decision. If you want a full size Toyota, you get a full size Toyota. The only thing that may hold back crown sales is dealers tacking on ADM due to its nameplate.

So basically the way it was worded to me by the other techs while I worked at Lexus was B was for active braking. You will notice it more around the city but it basically activates the regenerative braking without actually applying the brakes. The regenerative braking is the electric motor being swapped in polarity to be a generator and not a motor. This converts mechanical energy into electric energy and uses the momentum of the car to spin a generator. The car naturally does this while braking but with the B mode in use it becomes active without using the brake pedal slowing you faster and using the momentum of the car to stop it instead of the brake pads. This is particularly handy for downhill driving.

Toyota actually groups this under the “SUV” section on their Japanese website and not the “Sedan” section. There are a ton of small crossovers that sell well in Japan (Raize, Yaris Cross, Corolla Cross, C-HR - all just from Toyota), so this doesn’t look out of place in their “SUV” lineup. SUV styling is super popular - there is a version of the Honda Fit (the “crosstar”) which is basically identical to a Fit in every but is styled to look like a crossover, which sells reasonably well. So it makes sense to me add a bit of SUV styling to a full-size sedan.

I’ve been driving my father’s third gen Avalon a lot lately. It’s a great car, and I’m sad to see the model go, but it’s kind of amazing that it’s lasted as long as it has. To be sure, it made a lot of sense when it was introduced for the 1995 model year. The Camry was much smaller than it is now, and the interior wasn’t as nice. Over on the Lexus lots, the ES was smaller than the Avalon, and the GS cost about twice as much as an Avalon. There was definitely room for a Buick to Lexus’s Cadillac. Over the last thirty years, though, the Camry and Avalon got a lot bigger and the gap between the highest-priced Avalon and the base price GS shrank significantly. RWD tech also improved, meaning that the Avalon lost that advantage over the GS as well. These days, unless you’re Doug-sized (like I am, that’s part of the reason I like it and why I own a New Beetle) there’s not much of a reason to get one over the mechanically identical Camry, which costs less and has most of the same options. For not much more, you can also get a Lexus ES (which moved to the same longer version of the platform used by the Avalon with the XV60, by the way) or GS. It’s not just a problem on this side of the Pacific, either. In Japan, the old RWD Crowns have been somewhat superfluous ever since Lexus was introduced to the home market in 2005. The Aristo (Lexus GS) and Celsior (Lexus LS) had been causing overlap even before the rebrand. Sure, the Crown could be ordered with fewer bells and whistles if you needed a cheaper RWD sedan, but the demand apparently wasn’t there. They seemed to mostly hang on to it for the sake of tradition, taxi drivers and some older people just really wanted a Crown. The last nail in the coffin for it is that Japan’s been bitten by the crossover bug lately. They’re not even going to be selling the Camry there anymore. Let me repeat that: no more Camrys in Japan. That’s a pretty big deal. Sadly, it just makes too much sense to not axe two models that haven’t been selling as well as they used to and consolidate them into one that can meet the demands of both markets today. It cuts down on development and production costs, and using the same name for all markets makes advertising cheaper and easier. I would’ve preferred that our version carried on the Avalon name, but I can’t fault them for using the one with more global recognition. The Avalon nameplate was only used in North America and (very briefly) Australia, the latter almost getting a coupe utility version of the car (they built one prototype with the Lexus RX’s AWD system, it’s actually pretty cool).

I agree with the tradition part. They're not giving up on the sedan just yet because of the nostalgia although the Crown taxis in Japan are slowly being replaced by Hybrid models especially the JPN taxi. There is even one taxi company in Tokyo that purchased a fleet of Hyundai Ioniq 5s. There were previous rumours that Toyota was going to axe the Crown sedan and make it exclusively as a crossover. But I was surprised they released 4 different body styles; they haven't given up on the sedan yet. The outgoing sedan was only released in 2018 but I was surprised they went for a full model change this 2023. The new sedan is still based on TNGA-L but is now derived from the new Mirai and will be available in Hybrid and Fuel Cell. I find is strange though I was expecting all 4 body styles to be based in one platform TNGA-K but the sedan remains RWD in TNGA-L.

If he doesn’t like it in the first place or if he’s confused by it, of course it’s not going to get a good “Doug Score”.

Doug, the very thing you said about sales declining in the sedan segment and all the competition being killed off (Taurus, Maxima, Impala, Etc.) is the very thing that might help the Crown's sales numbers - little-to-no competition.

I’m 66 and recently discovered that I’m not getting any younger. I like the raised height and the quasi SUV look. Works for me. Reminds me a bit of the Honda Crosstour which I really liked.

I can't believe Doug didn't even mention the Toyota Corolla Cross, as those seem to be ubiquitous, so maybe this will do nicely in sales??

Would have made more sense if the whole trunk opened up as a hatchback. Kinda like the accord. Styled like a sedan but with the practicality of an suv or a hatchback

So far based on the reviews I love the Ltd trim of the Crown, what appeals to me is the seat height (easy in and out) and the overall build but for a $50K car that is supposed to be Toyota's flagship I wish they had a tendered to 3 simple items. 1. lack of HUD, 2. lack of a blind spot camera which is available even on a CRV, 3. The trunk lid should be on struts rather than a bar that you have to manually put in place to keep it open. I hope Toyota Engineers will look into these simple fixes for the next model year. It is the middle of 2023 and unfortunately I have yet to see a single Crown on the road.

This is my dream car. It has a nice interior, manual buttons and knobs in addition to a touch screen, good gas mileage, takes regular gas, and it has a big trunk that provides privacy that a hatchback with a little privacy cover doesn’t give. When my Honda accord eventually dies I would love to get one of these. Plus having AWD is a huge plus for any trips to the mountains.

If I had kids to haul around I would be all over this. Similarly, I liked the Accord CrossTour. I have zero interest in owning an SUV or crossover. This seems like a reasonably usable sedan alternative- plenty of space for passengers, plenty of cargo room, decent enough power for a daily runaround, and pretty spectacular fuel economy. The styling is appealing to me too, except for that massive faux grill on the front. But what do I know? I tend to be more drawn to unusual cars that don't end up selling well. I'm sure it won't sell in big numbers, but I'm glad someone is still making options besides cookie cutter SUVs.

So many Lincoln town car features. The cluster with center display square, the double flipping console, big old trunk, comfort suspension. Pretty great car, if they can get costs down it would be a fantastic livery car. And old folks too. But $$$$$

Doug, actually the B shift is something like the pressure build in a hydraulic truck shift. It increases friction and brakes the transmission.
