Fly with confidence! The new FAA Transponder regulation concerning ADS-B took effect in January 2020 and every pilot should be aware of both the obvious and the not so obvious details about this regulation when flying in your experimental homebuilt aircraft now. These new rules will have a different impact on pilots depending on where they fly. An important and sometimes not so well understood consequence of this new technology is the dramatic change in privacy every pilot should consider!
MY ERROR in the video - I left out CLASS E (10,000' and above) as a REQUIRED airspace for ADS-B. Most homebuilts are not up there - but some are!

Your points about anonymity for 1090 MHz Mode S are correct for the moment, however there is also the option of using a UAT 978 MHz transponder to satisfy the ADS-B requirement. This type has an anonymous mode which is equivalent to squawking 1200 because it generates a randomized code. Note that anonymous mode may only be used outside of rule airspace AND when not utilizing ATC services, i.e. flight following. If your flight begins or terminates in rule airspace, it would however still be straightforward to correlate the handover between your actual ICAO code and a randomized one.

You make some good points and I am sure there will be implication we have not considered. I have and like adsb but the ruling is overreaching and in my opinion geared for the future when drones will be crowding the sky’s. I think you may have mistakenly said class A above 10,000 feet. It’s 18,000 and also above 18000 you have to have a 1090 ADSB vs UAT which is ok below 18,000. Then there is also the question if you install adsb and the transponder required for it do you now have to have a 24 month transponder check by a certified shop even if you never enter class c airspace since it is required you have the adsb on if installed all the time, even in non ruled airspace. Another expense. Good job on all your videos... very informative.

Thank you Tom, yes I misspoke and left out class E (above 10,000') as a required airspace. (I added this error to the description) Thanks for catching this. And yes you are surely correct about the initial transponder check right after installation!

Leave the old one in, add a compliant new one and switch between the two as required!? From what I understand once you are out of the requirement area you only need a normal transponder. Also the old ones are now flooding the used market so they are basically not worth selling so might as well keep it...

I'm concerned with the lack of authentication. The system cannot know with certainty that the received data actually originated from a specific airplane. An adversary could spoof data making it look like you consistently violate regulations bringing enforcement action against you. One could make 'ghost' traffic resulting in real airplanes taking potentially dangerous evasive actions to avoid non-existent airplanes. Imagine the implications of a high powered transmitter faking signals from a real airplane making it appear to be at a different attitude than reality. They should have, at a minimum, included cryptographic signatures in the data that could be validated using public keys. The entire system seems devoid of security. No privacy for where you travel. No protection against fake data No method to validate if data is real and from a specific airplane

The difference between having GPS on your automobile and your plane is that the GPS on your plane is used for collision prevention. Given the number of mid air collisions and the difficulty crash investigators have in figuring out what happens when a plane crashes, I think ADS-B should be mandatory everywhere. Yes it is a bit expensive to install. Yes "big brother" can track your movement. But ADS-B will save many lives, just like seat belts now do in cars. It is a safety feature. And a good one at that.

I understood that we had to fly below 2500 ft AGL class E without ADS-B. Is it true we can fly to below class A 10,000ft? And is only home built able to fly or can certified aircraft with mode C included? Anybody? Thanks

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what youre saying, but as far as I understand it, what is shown on figure at 4:32 is NOT correct. My ADSB solution (and I'm not the only one), uses my existing GTX327 (which is a Mode C transponder) paired with an ADSB UAT for compliance in B, C airspace (UATs cant go into A space). Noone need buy a new transponder unless it infact cant be paired with a UAT for B/C access. But I could be wrong. Ref: 91-131 (d)

Your setup constitutes an ADS-B compliant transponder solution, no? In most of the video I say "new/upgrade" meaning to either upgrade your installation (like you did) or purchase a completely new transponder.

@@HomebuiltHELP Maybe its semantics, but to me, ADSB is not a transponder solution. Are there not stand alone ADSB-out solutions? Indeed, I dont see in the FAA docs where Mode A transponders are banned if you are ADSB compliant in another way. IOW, ADSB is an add-on requirement for A, B,C space compliance......no?
@HomebuiltHELP
@HomebuiltHELP 4 жыл бұрын
Must be semantics. "add-on requirement" sounds like an upgrade to me (to become ADS-B compliant). My point is that a Mode A, or C/S transponder by itself will not cut it in the A,B,C,E airspaces anymore. Beyond that description I think its semantics.

Get yourself something like GDL 82 , enable anonymous mode and your problem is solved - people will be able to see you as a target but won’t be able to identify you as you ( or anyone else ). The idea here is not to check some stupid boxes somewhere but enhance overall safety ...

In Australia a group of us started an ultralight club and we raised money to buy a drifter and some had their own aircraft and we had a guy that wanted to fly into the towns main airport that was controlled airspace and at that time there were many. Jet flights and they want small aircraft to move out to a close by airport I quit the club as this guy got most members to believe him that he was going to get us to fly into the airport when we wanted . I told them why do you want to start flying over the city with jets screaming pass you at 180 knots and upsetting them on a final that would take you 30 minutes. On final and we are there to have fun flying over farms and the coast no work load trying to if in to a major airport that will never happen . I can not understand why ultralight pilots want that sort of of hassle and one mistake CASA will be all over them and it happened shortly afterwards as this guy a pilot of a c310 went to CASA and said that they were going to use the airport for training and flights with the drifter and other ultralights and they were told they all had to have ppl to operate in control airspace and the ultralight would have to comply with the same rules as commercial aircraft and half of them were not smart enough to get a ppl and the club folded a few months later so everyone out there don’t use you ultralight like part 103 as a 737 and get into control airspace and turn it for everyone else as it will affect it world wide stay out in the country and just enjoy the country side and safe flying

1. You excluded a huge area where ADS-B is required. Anywhere in Class E airspace above 10,000 ft MSL and 2,500 ft AGL. 2. Your obvious bias of "privacy" issues made your argument sound a little nut jobby. Why are you so worried about people tracking your flights? 3. Why shouldn't the FAA be able to track airplanes that are breaking the law? Sounds a lot like your encouraging people to not only break the rules, but also hide what they're doing.

The problem is pilots are now losing their licenses for making simple mistakes. So yes, technically “breaking the law”, but not on purpose or being malicious. Give the government an inch, and they will abuse the power and take a mile, that is the issue he is eluding to.

you want privacy? crawl into a bubble. If the "privacy" provision prevents other aircraft from seeing/identifying other aircraft (potential bandits), ADS-B becomes be rendered irrelevant and eliminates the safety that it was intended to provide. EXTREMELY poor policy
