My reading of Harleen's line to Bruce during their last session was that it was there to tell us that she understood the difference between him and the dirtbags she locked up and robbed of their money. She, like Alfred, understood that he was putting on an act in public to mask his trauma, and genuinely wanted to help him, but didn't see any signs that he was doing anything that necessitated Harley Quinn stepping in. He was safe from her justice.

Sure Gotham is a wild place, but a masked vigilante who takes the law into his own hands who'd rather beat up the poor and mentality ill instead of going to actual therapy AND while the police just turn a blind eye to him isn't helping. @ dude shut the fuck up You’re trying to press irl context onto a fictional story Bruce Wayne irl wouldn’t debatably be a good person due to him being a billionaire but in fiction it allows him to do literally everything good Do you want him to not be a billionair? Leave the company Wayne tech that gives a good paying job to whoever it can while making stuff to save the world, stuff Bruce doesn’t claim ownership of? You are just the laziest in the long line of people trying to do “Batman or Bruce Wayne is secretly bad” posts and like all the rest you’re just wrong This isn’t reality this is a fictional story where a billionaire can be good

I would also like it if it is revealed that he has seen the gunman before. That every once in a while he would notice a person placing flowers on the Wayne graves. He would never get a good look at them but he would suspect that they were the killer.

There’s a moment in Batman forever that has stuck with me since childhood. Bruce wakes up after being shot by two face and Alfred’s first words to him are “How are you young man?” Those small moments where Alfred offers unconditional support are some of the most powerful. He loves and supports every member of the Bat family and is the foundation that keeps them steadfast and allows them a small respite from the never ending war on crime. Dick breaks his leg chasing red hood what’s the first thing Alfred offers? A simple cup of tea.

Alfred is one of the best Batman characters ever. Despite being a simple butler he has the best awesome moments. Lile seriously he beat up Injustice superman, talked to Batman while causally loading a shotgun, interrogated Kathyrn, literally defeated a xenomorph in a comic crossover, and much more. This Alfred while he may not be the usual Alfred appearance he is a good person. He is a father, caregiver, and good person. Even if Pennyworth looks different he cares for Bruce despite Batman dismissing him. He actually tries to help Batman against villains. Even though Batman may be rude Batman cared for Bruce. Another things is Alfred was MVP against Gentleman Ghost. Alfred may have come from a rich bloodline but he never used his status to treat people horribly like Gentleman Ghost. Alfred was able to help him despite the odds and managed to help him. Alfred is the best. He is the most consistently Batman adapted character. We love Alfred and he shows family isn't always blood but family is from genuine loyalty and bonds. Also Alfred's VA is the best here. Now I wonder what secret is he hiding. Anyways I hope we could see more on this Alfred.

Yeah, I get why some would be just a little bit salty of Batman's treatment of Alfred in this series. While I wouldn't categorize it as ABUSIVE, per se, there ARE points throughout the Season where you can tell that Bruce is venting at least some small portion of his anger Alfred’s way, simply because he has nowhere else to direct it at that particular moment (ie. no mugger in front of him that he can beat up for catharsis). Of course, this Batman is something of an acquired taste all-around, because for a lot of this first Season, he's still resolutely entrenched in his “angry little boy” phase. The angry little boy who's come to HATE the world and everything in it, and who, in his weaker moments, would be perfectly content to just burn it all down. I think that moment is clearly illustrated in the climax of the Season Finale, when Harvey Dent is murdered and Batman threatens to shoot Arnold Flass. Because my interpretation of that scene was that this was Batman at his absolute weakest point, that he did finally let his rage get the better of him, even if it was just for the briefest of moments, and that he did have every intention of killing Flass right then and there. The lengthy pause in that scene, was of him asking himself in his own head why he shouldn't let go and just do it. And in the end, what I think talked him down was the realization that he had actually killed someone already...specifically, Harvey Dent. Sure, Flass may have done the deed and Rupert Thorne may have ordered it. But it was Batman's callous actions as Bruce Wayne, taken in pursuit of his own satisfaction and nothing else, that led to Dent's rampage in the previous episode, and started the chain of events that put him in the crosshairs to begin with. As such, Dent's blood was as much on Batman's hands as anybody's, and that reality was simply unpalatable to him. Now, I do agree with the take in your Batman essay that, as the Season wore on, Batman was slowly turning away from ONLY punishing the guilty to helping the innocent. But I believe that scene with him and Flass was when it truly crystallized in his mind that becoming the thing he hates wasn't going to help him win. For Batman's crusade to succeed, it can't just be all about HIS pain, and he has to at least TRY to get out of his own way, so he won't end up making the same mistakes in the future. I realize a lot of what I'm saying here really has nothing to do with Alfred. But Bruce's treatment of him really was just a symptom of the larger problem and not the problem itself. Essentially, much of the first Season was about Batman coming to the revelation that fixating only on what HE wants and brushing all other considerations aside is how the CRIMINALS operate. And he needs to be BETTER than that, lest others he never intended to harm become wreckage in his wake, just as Dent did (which kind of led to that final scene of dialogue between him and Alfred). I guess we’ll see how good a job he does at consciously applying that philosophy, once Season 2 is released. At least, that's just MY thinking on it.

I think a compelling way to go with Alfred's secret would be that things were supposed to be like how they were in the Golden Age comics, and Bruce was meant to be taken in by his Uncle Phillip. But Alfred fought to keep the boy in his custody, either because of the Wayne's wishes or because he saw that Phillip was not a good man. And years later Alfred can question if he did the right thing by doing that and keeping Bruce away from his biological family and letting him go down the path he did. I do love the balance where Alfred is always ready to help, but questions if becoming Batman is the right thing for Bruce. Plus it would be a great way to introduce Bruce's cousin Kate (who has dated Renee Montoya in the comics), and Crows Security, the Kane family's private security agency.

and then Absolute Batman does the near unthinkable and makes Alfred more of an antagonist to Batman, but strangely, it feels "okay" as Absolute Batman's story is more like Terry McGinnis, changing the nature of the characters to fit this new narrative while still keeping things somewhat familiar is an interesting way to build up Bruce and Alfred's relationship. Just like Caped Crusader is taking a firmer look at "Batman when he first donned the costume", and Absolute's take is more "If Bruce grew up in a typical family rather than already being wealthy" and showing that they CAN tell the same kind of story even with these major modifications and still make it feel like the Batman we know and love.

What Alfred is hiding isn't so much a "secret," as it is the memory of his greatest day of shame. At least it's the event he's least proud of, if Bruce even remembers, he probably doesn't even care. On their last trip to Disney World as a family, on November 9, 1999 Master Bruce asked Alfred to take him on the Skyway one more time before the park closed. Everyone was tired of following the precocious child around all day, so Alfred sided with his _actual_ employers, and reminded Bruce that they had Season Passes, and that Skyway wasn't going anywhere. Needless to say, if you even know what Skyway is, you know how _that_ turned out. Oh, maybe Alfred believes the Waynes left the theater early that fateful night to "make up" for the Skyway incident? Like, "Last time we didn't listen to you, and something bad happened; but not this time, champ!" And basically Alfred doesn't want Bruce to hear this story because then he'll blame himself _a little bit more_ than he previously did.

The people who were mad about Batman being so cold to Alfred missed the point. Caped Crusader is about Bruce reconnecting with his humanity, and Alfred is the catalyst for that. The moment when he finally calls him Alfred instead of Pennyworth is so powerful because it was earned. The final episode, particularly the tense moment between Batman and Flass, was a test, and Batman acknowledging his loyal servant by his first name is further proof that he passed it

S2 Bruce is going to need something plot-specific to return to being a jerk to Alfred. And it likely won't be Alfred's secret since if was that, Bruce would've never dropped his emotional walls to Alfred in this season.

@@Teknanam umm ya, i know i saw the show just like you did, that's why i said i hope he doesn't treat him like crap *Again* I wouldn't be surprised if he crashes out for something small, unless if it's something that's understandable

@@Achieme My point was that Bruce treating Alfred like crap over the secret (a concern you've expressed) is basically impossible. The plot point and its relevance is past. It can only be relevant again if the question of what the secret is becomes relevant. And I'd rather not speculate on an undefined plot point getting revealed and making Bruce and/or Alfred act in unlikeable ways.

Do you have anything negative to say about Caped Crusader? I mean just a nitpick, anything? Now I will admit I did like the nod to the golden age version of Alfred with the design and the moment he protected Bruce from the ghost was awesome.

I wish the animation was flashier. I had hoped for scenes that rivalled Clayface's meltdown at the Galaxy Broadcast Station in Feat of Clay Part 2. The music could've been more bombastic too.

Alfred may be by like Batman’s soul but the Robin’s represent his hopes for the future. each Robin trains hopefully can make a difference after he is gone, and hopefully without as much fisticuffs.

i like to think alfred is a bit bigger now compared to when bruce was a child just because hes older. i also just personally dislike narratives in stories that bigger folk are bigger because of stress eating since, althought OFC is a real thing that happens, is a trope thats usually played as a joke and that makes people connect the dots that if someone's fat its just cause theyre unhealthy(im pretty sure if they did take that route with alfred in Caped Crusaders however im confident theyd handle the subject well) But again not trying to change anyones opinion just sharing my personal thoughts since your comment section always seems pretty polite. :)

Here's the quote I alluded to from Bruce Timm: "I don’t think I had any ‘precious secret in particular’ in mind when I put those words in Possessed Alfred’s mouth, beyond a vague notion that Alfred might still be feeling Survivor’s Guilt over that night in Crime Alley, or maybe feeling bad that he was never able to deter Little Bruce from his obsession with ‘making them pay’, and in fact enabled him in his chosen path. We may come up with a more explosive ‘bombshell’ type secret for Alfred to be keeping from Batman later on. Or we may not…" Source: animesuperhero.com/forums/threads/batman-caped-crusader-season-one-talkback-spoilers.5799833/post-87961552

It probably stems back to the religious significance of the divine right of kings and by extension their courts, key word being "divine." America was built on anti-monarchist sentiment, so it wouldn't have a "nobility" to speak of in that sense. Thematically an American industrialist like Thomas Wayne and his heirs wouldn't qualify. A lot of symbolism and ritualism is based on rules more than say status or social class. Even if the Wayne family were wealthier and more notable than the Pennyworth family, they don't trace their tradition back to divine titles conferred by a monarch.
