I really like this line of Alpinists. The gray one is of particular interest to me. I haven't seen these in my 2 local Seiko Luxe ADs, but I haven't been in about 6 months. I have seen all the other Alpinists, including the 38mm "baby" Alpinists, which wear great. I would like to see at least 1 or 2 more micro adjusts, but I can understand why they don't go too crazy as it's a dressier watch. The gap in the clasp is weird though. I don't get it, but it probably wouldn't keep me away from the watch. I actually love the overbuilt 200m WR resistant spec, as it's part of the Alpinist charm. Depending on the dial, it really is sort of the Explorer for Seiko, at a fraction of the price. My SPB089 on a Strapcode bracelet is just a phenomenal GADA watch, lack of AR withstanding. I really wish I could speak to somebody at Seiko about the lack of signed crown. It's on my SPB089, and the only excuse I can think of as a differentiator for Presage is very lame. Sure, leave it off those low end Seiko 5 line watches, but I'd actually like to see the Prospex logo on their divers, and even this Alpinist. I realize some don't like that log for some reason, but at least it would fit with the line. The Presage line shouldn't be the only one that doesn't get a signed crown. What's crazy is they even extend that to Prospex models costing thousands of dollars. Really, Seiko?

You were not exaggerating. That dial is oddly complex and simple all at the same time. Also the applied indices and half polished half brush hands are nice finishing touches. Place another logo on there and this watch would cost a lot more. One could slap IWC ingenieur branding here easily and it would be a lot more. Super valid point about shiny markers that disappear in the light. Plus large power reserve + 200m water resist. Well done here by Seiko Pity about the bezel and odd clasp.

Very good review of a very good watch Dave. The Alpinist is a true GADA watch, suitable for 90% of situations most folk will find themselves in. If the Explorer, as a one watch collection has a flaw, it's the lack of a date. Sure, aesthetically it's better off without it, as would be this iteration of the Alpinist I'd argue. But functionally it's better with a date comp. And the date is executed well. Although I genuinely prefer it, I don't like the idea of a 6 o'clock date on this piece for some reason. I do wonder if a trapezoidal date aperture (like on vintage Universal Genevè Pole routers) would be an improvement? It would maintain most of the angles on the indices... I've had a 'regular' Alpinist (the SPB123J Champagne w/- gold variant) for two years plus, which I wear on an after market jubilee bracelet. It's accurate to ~ +/-2 spd and by far my favourite 'daily' watch, despite sharing the watch-box with pieces others may consider more desirable. It's a keeper: I will never part with it voluntarily.

I have the champagne dial version (SPB241), I do love this design and might also pick up this deep lake version. That gap in the clasp has been there since the Sarb033/035 series. I replaced the bracelet on mine almost immediately. The same gap exists on the SPB155 I own, absolutely love, and that one's been replaced as well. I'd love to know how this continues to get by Seiko's design team.

I consider this watch another missed opportunity by Seiko. It's supposed to be a tool watch but it has a 19mm lug width, high polish surfaces, clasp with only two adjustments and no particular reason to be so thick. Beautiful dial but I would classify the watch as a dress watch that is toolish not a tool watch that is dressy.
@alanmckinnon67912 жыл бұрын
I'm with you on this, it's a nice flashy watch looking toolish. I have a Longines Conquest that does the same - 30 bar WR, screw-down crown and decent crown guards. But polished bracelet, no knurling on the crown, butterfly clasp and horrors! no lume. It's the blue dial version, black one does have lume.

@@alanmckinnon6791 For me the main Longines horror is the never ending lugs. They all look exceptional and all wear like crap.

Great review, Dave. I think this watch is stunning, and will most likely be adding it to my collection soon. I have an SPB155 that has a very similar bracelet, and I find it odd that the "gap" on the clasp that you see on a lot of Seikos and other less expensive watches is always criticized, while the almost identical gap on a Rolex explorer (or some other model) is not a problem. I guess that's because the gap looks better on a Rolex, lol. I'd prefer at least 3 micro adjustments, but I don't have a problem getting an acceptable fit.

I got this for £476 new from an authorized dealer in UK, I can't wait to get it. I was after something which has great lume and reliable movement,70h power reserve is just great,plus 38mm is perfect. I always loved Seiko. Is it any anti reflective coating?

I'm interested in this piece. Which UK AD did you get it from if you don't mind me asking. Best I can see this particular model is £585 including a 10% discount.

@@squeezyv I got it from Babla's Jewellers , from London, it was the last piece though. I love the watch, colour, design and really great lume, however the timekeeping on this particular piece is rubbish, first 3 days was -20 sec/day, than a week later it started to slow down,now is around -60/day ,dial up in it's box,right out Seikos tolerance -15/+25/day. Everything else is great,great crown action, really smooth wind, the clasps is a wrong,small ,2 micro adjustments and feature a huge gap when is closed,plus the links are not very tight and rattle,but the bracelet is fluid,the watch seats a bit too high on the wrist too. I would keep ot if the movement was within tolerance 👍

Sigh…another "missed it by *that* much" release from my favorite brand. But it's still crazy-compelling: the watch I'm saving up for is another "homage" from Seiko: either their Presage SPB059J ("Laurel'), or their Presage SSA387J1 (Cocktail Time), both with power-reserve. But, nit-picking aside, and in spite of my already having the Alpinist SARB 017 (which ain't going nowhere), this one tickles my fancy. Yes, the clasp-gap bugs me almost as much as it does you, but I likely could manage in terms of the limited adjustability (slightly over 7" wrists here). Have to seriously think this one over, thanks to you. ;-)
@Frank-qs3pe2 жыл бұрын
I reluctantly bought the Presage cocktail time. My wife was with me while I was watch shopping and I wanted another Seiko diver. She said I had to many and I needed a dress watch (UGGHH, lesson learned never bring the wife). Well I bought it and hated it. I wouldn't even wear it out.So we went for dinner one night and I gave it a shot. Well I have to say the watch grew on me and now it's become my dinner watch.Good luck my friend !

Hi Dave. Great video and exceptional camera work showing this watch. It’s such a frustration that Seiko put so much effort into some design aspects of the watch, but then not others. Frankly I’m surprised as Japanese companies are renowned for continued improvement until perfection is achieved.

The benefit of both brush and polish on the hands is actually even bigger than "fancy versus" practical! Brush and polish come alive/contrast to their backgrounds very differently depending on the light (for example, in bright light a high polish hand actually disappears against a dark dial but is super visible in low light, while the opposite is the case for a brushed hand). Having both means high contrast against the dial all the time. It's a big reason why Grand Seiko hands very often get even more complex, faceting their hands and mixing finishing techniques in super elegant ways.

Been trying to scratch my Rolex itch with lots of discount options and this one is promising. However, for "only" 3x the $, the Ball Engineer II has my vote. Has the same annoying strap width but the movement is amazing, 70 hr reserve, fab bracelet and history too ... however, can't touch the dial on the Seiko. Classic struggle, looks vs substance divided by spare cash. Great review!

I have two 19mm and one 21mm piece in my collection. I wear them on 18mm and 20mm straps respectively and you have to look hard to even notice. It's a non-issue, really. I've also squeezed a 20mm strap into one of my 19mm pieces and that was fine too, just harder on the strap and easier to scratch up the lugs. Bracelets are a different story of course...

I'm having a hard time seeing how this is a Rolex alternative. I really like this watch. This would be perfect for someone who like Seiko, likes this look of watch, who is really taken by this watch. But, if what you really want is a Rolex, it has nothing to do with timekeeping, it is a status symbol, you really want to treat yourself, etc. If anything, I would think of this watch for someone who normally wears a $200 watch and is looking for an upgrade.
