Arsenal needed an 8 who can pass the ball well, Rice doesn't have that attribute he could switch overs (which arteta doesn't like), normal passes accurately but not progressive passes, the left wingers were struggling from lack of support from the leftback and the midfielder, the right side is very active and most attacks comes from that side with saka, odegard and white combining,so buying an 8 was very important hope Merino and Calafiori could make that side lively and it would also make martinelli and trossard more dangerous.

Their defense and midfield is much more stronger and balanced than ever before. Arsenal had the best defensive record in the Premier League last season and they’ve added Riccardo Calafiori to a backline that already has William Saliba Gabriel and Ben White, also with David Raya in between the sticks. It’s a very good signing because he offers a lot of quality and depth to the team, he’s very versatile and he automatically fits their defense since he’s a center back who will play as a left back and his ability was evident during his time at Bologna, we all saw a glimpse of how good he was at the EUROs and they’ve signed a player with such a high ceiling. On the bench, they’ll have Jurrien Timber Jacob Kiwior Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu most of them can play as a left back and a center back and in a long season where you’re competing in all competitions, the most important thing is to have depth and your bench has to be good enough to fill in for some of the starting players. We have seen how good Mikel Arteta has been when it comes to transforming center backs into natural fullbacks and he is likely to do the same thing with Calafiori. They already have 2 world class midfielders in Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice and are about to add the perfect box to box midfielder to complement both of them which is Mikel Merino who’s very tenacious energetic technical and has excellent work rate in and out of possession and he’s another player who had his moments at the EUROs and since Rice played more advanced at times last season, he and Merino will switch on the pitch from CDM to CM depending on who they play and how they want to approach the game. The attacking options are very good. Bukayo Saka is coming off the back of another prolific season at Arsenal as at the age of 22, he had 20 goals and 14 assists 34 G/A in all competitions despite not even being in his prime yet and once again he was excellent for England in a major tournament and was one of the most consistent players on a team that had a lot of top players who underperformed, Gabriel Martinelli had a very disappointing season by his standards, he’s capable of returning to his best which is a boost for their attack, Leandro Trossard was important to the team in a lot of games based off of the amount of big goals that he scored time and time again and on paper, their team is very strong, but there’s a belief that they still need a clinical striker if they want to truly win the league this time around despite scoring 85 goals last season. Kai Havertz did very well as a number 9 towards the back end of the season and he looked like a perfect fit, he’s never been a prolific goalscorer during his time in England and he’s not the answer up top even though they’re likely going to use him as their starting striker next season, Gabriel Jesus is such a well rounded player and he offers so much to the team, he did struggle with some niggling injuries, but for a while everyone has known that goals aren’t his biggest strengths and even he publicly admitted that which is something that you don’t want to hear from the one of the only recognized strikers on the team. The team that they’re competing against Manchester City have a world class striker in Erling Haaland who is consistent at scoring goals even when he’s criticized for not being at his best and he’s the sort of player that Arsenal are missing in their team because without a proper striker, does the team as a whole have enough goals in them to win the title. Only time will tell and with Manchester City winning 6 out of the last 7 titles and the potential of them winning 5 consecutive Premier League titles in a row next season, someone needs to stop their dominance as the league has become so predictable in recent years in a sense that it’s inevitable that they’ll win no matter what happens they’ve turned the best league in the world into a “farmers league” and with Arsenal getting stronger and stronger and Arteta having the right profile, he’s capable of creating a winning formula that can help them get over the line in the Premier League title race despite lacking a prolific goalscorer as we’ll see how they’ll cope with that situation.

I think it makes sense that the position Arsenal didn’t upgrade was their striker because yes, that could be what wins them the league. But than again Havertz only had have a season worth of a crazy goal threat, and therefore unlike their lack of a proper number 8 or a reliable left back there is room for improvement. Maybe for Arsenal, this time around, 3rd time is the charm for them. In the 2022-23 season, despite being in 1st place for 32 weeks, they missed out on the premier league title by 5 points after they crumbled towards the business end of the season and just when many people believed that they couldn’t do it again, last season, they were even better as they accumulated 89 points, had the best defensive record in the Premier League, and after the turn of the year, they won majority of their games and were almost perfect, but narrowly lost out on the title by 2 points. Sometimes you wonder what Arsenal’s fortunes would’ve looked like if they had beaten Aston Villa as after that loss they won the rest of their games and it wasn’t enough for them. In a title race particularly against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who have a knack of hitting top form during the business end of the season and are able to peak at any time, the margins are so small and there’s no room for error and it’s a great sign for Arsenal that they’ve come very close in recent seasons, but I still think they’re lacking the killer instinct of being champions and this summer they have upgraded a couple of key areas in the team hoping to finally go all the way this time around.

On eye test yes he looks good & Merino is technical and is a good passer but is nowhere near comparable to Xhaka who they’re still trying to replace after Kai and Rice didn’t meet those expectations. Merino’s best passing ans well as overall statistics is only better by Xhaka’s worst (compare them both on FBREF I’ve checked. The line breaking passes your referring to are through balls on FBREF and based on the minutes when you compare per 90 to estimate how how much one’s does through the mean of the numbers. The passing is important in Arsenal’s case as clearly seen from the Declan Rice situation)which was the last season he was at arsenal. Should arsenal have kept Xhaka yes despite him being a liability at times and his performances not being the best at times the season at Leverkusen sure convinced anyone that arsenal completely underutilized him. Joey Veerman is more comparable to Xhaka than Merino. Actually it’s factually incorrect check for yourself the highest aerial duels won according to FBREF was Tim Kleindienst of Heidenheim(merino is 4th[to check you click on 23/24 season for any top 5 league, click on the link that says big 5 European leagues, go to player stats and under click miscellaneous stats, adjust the aerials won to see the players]). Also to see how many Mikel Merino won compared to lost its 68.7% meaning its a good chance he wins an aerial duel. However there’s more to being a midfielder than aerial duels the more important thing is possession and passing which he is good at but not amazing at certainly not comparable to Xhaka in that regard. There might be some other things that Merino is better at than Xhaka but overall Xhaka is better. Also I’m not that impressed by the Calafiori transfer for a simple reason: he’s a left sided Tomiyasu. I remember when Arsenal signed Tomiyasu and I knew of him as I watch Serie A somewhat regularly and he looked good so when I watched majority of the games he played under Mihajlovic I was excited to see what he could do although I was wary of his injuries which unfortunately came to be true. Coming back to Calafiori, I compared him on FBREF to Facundo Medina of Lens and Olivier Boscagli of PSV as those CB’s are quite underrated and it wasn’t surprising that he wasn’t much better than the pair but I took the benefit of the doubt knowing they play in weaker leagues. Then I remembered that Tomiyasu played in Bologna too and played similarly in the sense they played CB and RB (Tomiyasu) and LB(Calafiori). Surprising they were similar which disappointed me cause I was hoping he’d be at least better as he played for a good Bologna side compared to a Mihajlovic side that finished 12th. Overall you can check this all for yourself on FBREF but I know for myself that statistics aren’t everything but watching even a compilation of the pair on KZbin one can’t say they aren’t similar. One of the reasons why there’s a lot of buzz behind Calafiori is due to the fact he played well for rubbish Spaletti Italian side(no offense plus Scalvini and Acerbi would’ve played if not for their injuries), he played for an unorthodox Italian side that over performed, a lot of people watch the Euros so they once a player does well there’s always a team that foolishly overpays for a above average player and he looks similar to Nesta and Maldini while Tomiyasu is a Japanese international where in comparison to the Euros not a lot of people watch the Asian games
