World of Warcraft patch 10.0.7 Return to the Forbidden Reach is packed full of new story quests, but none more interesting than that of Ebyssian (Ebonhorn) and Emberthal, which, in our opinion, absolutely cements the HIgmountain Dragon as new Black Dragon Aspect in the very near future. And with that particular story set to come to a close in Embers of NEltharian patch 10.1 which sees Wrathion, Sabellion and even Sarkareth stake their own claims, we take a look at the brilliant 10.0.7 cutscene and explain WHY Ebyssian is the right choice to lead.

Definitely my favorite cut-scene in a long time. So much emotion between the two, brilliantly shown by the voice acting and graphics. The part where Emberthal stands a bit straighter after Ebyssian said she had resisted the voice of Neltharion in her head to choose compassion. It harkens back to her in the library at the beginning of the quest line where she said she was looking for a reason for what she was doing. Grade A stuff.

Even before the Wrathion v Sabellian deal I thought Ebyssian should have been the new Aspect, unlike the others who only think of "birthrights" and "rule", Ebyssian focuses on family.

The case for Ebyssian is actually an extraordinarily simple one. Of the 3 candidates he's the only actual adult among them. The others have their qualities, but fundamentally they're chasing very different things and a position of leadership would be means to an end for them, rather than a purpose in itself. You don't get that from Ebyssian. Oh, and also in an interview one of the devs straight up said it wouldn't be either Wrathion or Sabellian. I forget which dev and which interview but it was in a response to how player "voting" would effect the outcome.

Simple, he's the only one to even comment on the possibility that they are all of the same flight. I dont doubt Wrathion and Sabellian simply seeing them as any other experiment from the old days. Ebyssian's already accepted them as family.

An important thing you didn’t mention (probably because there’s a bit of 10.1 campaign spoilers) is the fact that Ebyssian has respect from all other parts of the Black Dragonflight. Wrathion, his Black Talons, and other mortals have spent time with him, Emberthal and the Dracthyr are establishing relationship here and during 10.1, and Sabellian (plus his brood) has some scenes with Ebyssian in 10.1. Ebyssian may end up becoming the Aspect because it’s the only thing Sabellian, Wrathion, and Emberthal can agree on. Sabellian doesn’t get corrupted like Neltharion, Wrathion stays the Black Prince, a brand new not-dragon doesn’t get dragon Aspect powers right after being introduced, and Blizzard has to animate Tauren faces more. Wins for everybody.

To be fair... I feel like Ebyssian is the only one of the three to even really address the drakthyr. Wrathion has been preoccupied since taking the rock to the face, and Sabellian probably knew about them before, but hasn't been in the same place with them since.

Emberthal saying: you must be disappointed. Is the line that gets me. Like deeeeeeep inside. I love the idea of them healing the flight together by transcending Neltherion's legacy. Which is a big theme this expac has, legacy and overcoming all the weight that it comes with. This is what makes Ebenhorn the obvious next aspect. I can't wait to see it.

It's really amazing how expressive they have been able to make these two very different and very non-human faces. It's not just the eyes, but that's a lot of it. Add the general body language and the stellar voice acting and it's really easy to feel their self-doubt and pain, and respond in kind. The cinematics and voice direction teams at Blizzard are second to none, and they just keep getting better!

Whenever there's something going on with another flight they seem to always refuse to get involved, despite them having the second highest population of the flights from what we see at the lifepools. And they dont have the excuse of having lost their original aspect like the greens did.

Green dragons are stewards in the balance of life and the natural world. They are not normally acting hands-on in worldly events that come and go.. which is why I love them :) They will have their part to play soon enough in this expansion and I have a feeling its going to be epic and beautiful. I really like that the other flights are accepting of their nature as well.

@@TimeyWimey. You don't seem to know the story of the Reds. Alex has been enslaved by the orcs, she has been forced to give birth and her children have been enslaved and abused by the orcs. The Reds are badly decimated, not only because of the cause but also because of the war with the Black Dragonflight that kept flaring up. Just because there are many eggs doesn't mean there are many. All dragonflights are decimated, the blue ones the most.

One thing that really got to me about this cutscene is how every line held the same impact as Janina’s “is he the Bomb this time,” from BFA tbh, an utterly fantastic piece of writing.

I think it's very interesting that both Wrathion and Sabellian chose very imperial, warlike looking Visages, whilst Ebonhorn is more shamanic. It says alot about their mindsets. I think this is all going to come to ahead in the Aberrus raid, especially in the fight with the reflection of Neltharion. Personally, All three need each other, Wrathion has the optimism, Sabellian is the realist and Ebyssian has the wisdom to counter the two's more negative traits (Arrogance and ruthlessness respectively), and they can both give him the confidence to overcome his hesitancy. I would like to see after the end of the boss-fight, We're going to see Sarkareth not as a monster or a powerful foe, but as someone really desperate and scared, scraping through the dregs of Neltharions legacy looking for legitimacy, unable to step out of his creators shadow. Almost an anti-climax to the boss, but I would find that really work for the "Legacy" of the Black Dragons, and almost a thesis statement on Dragonflight as a whole. Alexstrazsa is unable to activate the mother Oathstones because the power is gone, whilst her fellow leaders are all going on some kind of revelatory journey and re-thinking what it is to protect Azeroth, and found new missions. Theres almost an element of "Third path" philosophy to it. Even from a design aspect, as whilst Dragonflight feels like Cata/mop, It's not either chasing nostalgia or hyping up the stakes, but finding a new way of approaching the game. Taliesin is right, the Black Dragonflight really does play a microdrama for the expansion as a whole.

11:26 - "When she accuses Emberthal of being a coward..." You mean when she calls Ebyssian a coward? Also, 100% agree with you here, Taliesin. Ebyssian is the most "non-black dragony" black dragon in the game! The others are arrogant, haughty, ultimately self-serving, all about glory and duty and gaining of power. Corrupted in a sense that politicians are corrupt. We would likely see them become Deathwing 2.0, even if they weren't exactly alike daddy Neltharion. Ebyssian, however, is the opposite. Tempered by Highmountain wisdom, patience and, yes, humility, and respect for and fear of the earth and the deep places. He's a perfect non-mortal to live in an increasingly mortal-inhabited world. A gentler presence. Strong, yes, in a sense, but not focused *on* that strength. He would likely have trouble embracing the darker parts of the earth-warder role, but handle them well, much like he handled the Dracthyr by earning Emberthal's trust and mingling among them. A real *down to earth* aspect, eh? Eh?

Also when you read the books "War of the Ancients" by Christie Golden, it is said that Neltharion was the wiser of the aspects. They all came to him when they were in doubt of what was the right thing to do. That's exactly what Ebyssian represents as an individual: wisdom. So yeah, on top of many things going for Ebyssian as the new aspect, it's also quite clear story-telling wise that it would end up be him.

Man. I think that cutscene might be one of the best in WoW. I was so surprised by the Ebonhorn reveal and looking at Dragonflight now… Yeah I think it could be him. Blizzard has been taking steps to protect the dramatic beats of their story, which now has me thinking they would be willing to let the narrative turn in a way that they haven’t plastered all over the internet. Especially after that cinematic, I had gotten the same exact impression. As we progress through patch 10.1 especially as Ebyssian spends some one-on-one time with both Wrathion and Sabellian and ultimately hast to save the latter from shadowflame corruption. It’s just my hope that after Wrathion and Sabellian get to see what happens in Abberus firsthand that this makes them realize that they don’t actually want to inherit Neltharion’s legacy and perhaps the two of them will simply just turned to Ebyssian and tell him that they realize he’s the better choice

It’s almost like someone looked at the Night Warrior storyline in Shadowlands and went “Ok we should try doing this choosing forgiveness/a different path story right. With real character development instead of just suddenly making it a plot point in a cutscene”. Imagine what could have been if Tyrande was forced to confront her rage and the fact that she abandoned the souls of her people in Torghast to pursue vengeance. That in choosing vengeance she had actually caused real harm to the ones she was trying to protect. (For those who didn’t play the Night Fae campaign in Shadowlands, one of the quests has you track down Tyrande in the Maw, and eventually into Torghast. The end boss is an amalgamation of a TON of night elf souls that have been tormented so much they’ve turned hostile and into a sort of soul beast. Tyrande just sorta nopes out since she is focused on finding Sylvanas, and so Shandris and the player character subdue and then rescue all the souls that Tyrande just sort of left behind) Emberthal isn’t in the exact same situation, true. But she made the choice to not take vengeance if it meant killing those whom she felt simply were going down the wrong path. She confronts what she had done in the past and shows regret for it and grows from the pain, uses it to make a different choice. Tyrande channeled Elune and was told to either choose renewal or she would die. There wasn’t a confrontation with her sins, there was never a moment where she had a choice in front of her to choose the welfare of her people or her vendetta, she didn’t have to grow from her experience. The moment that they thought would have “impact” didn’t land because it wasn’t earned. I felt real emotion in the cutscene with Ebonhorn and Emberthal because it was an organic moment, it had been coming all through the questline. It had really been coming since the Dracthyr starting zone. It was earned. It was fantastic. Plus the voice acting was absolutely on point, and the facial expressions and little things like the sighs and the pauses… the cut scene quality has been truly outstanding in Dragonflight

I have to say, this cut scene really shows what the WoW team can do when they actually are given the freedom to do the story justice. The facial animations, the voice acting, the lines and voice direction for the lines. This is amazing. It actually gave me Endwalker vibes, a very specific scene with a hot grandpa and twinkie friend, and a plea for the future. This right here is how I feel MMOs should push one another forwards. To push the limits that we as players expect from stories and how those stories are portrayed to us. Also, thank you for putting the voice actor names out there. It all makes it so much easier to look them up!

4 dragonriding mount, that could get 4 different abilities during the fight by collecting "power orbs" through the sky. - One could be a big earth shield to soak a galakrond mechanic like a big fire orbs or flames against the NewWorldTree(NWT). - One being a big ball of arcane to throw at the boss. - One could be an dream energy orb that restore the entire raid dragonriding vigor. - Last one could be a healing red orb that could heal the assaulted tree. The trick is that thoses orbs of extra powers would always be available at the same window of opportunity but they'll not all necessary be needed everytime, so players have to chose wisely what to do each time they're available. And there you have it, a part of tactical and strategical gameplay that players loves for raid encounter.

And thanks again for chatting about that perceived 'plot hole' when you were on stream! I dig how nuanced this ends up making the scene - it's a testament to guilt. To...faults in beings who are supposed to be above the mortals, but are just as fallible and prone to emotional hang-ups (and family drama!). Another great vid, Tali! Those in game cutscenes have gotten so good in recent years. They finally started having mouth movements form to the words spoken instead of just flappy gappy mouth wiggles and it just brings a lot of realism to it. I'd like to see Ebyssian become aspect as well. I also hope that Wrathion and Sabellian are mature enough characters to align with him to make a stronger black dragonflight. It would be awesome to have a friendly and somewhat powerful black dragonflight to quest for instead of against in the game. Especially if there's a section dedicated to the player helping the flight as a whole regain a footing to protect Azeroth. Regardless, it's been good story so far this expansion and I hope it continues.

Ebonhorn becoming the new Black aspect also means he's first aspect using a (non-Elf) Horde race for his visage form. This alone makes him the best choice already.

I hope they pull a "oh we can actually do that" and make the 3 of them demi aspects to lead the black dragonflight as a Council. Since the nature of the black seems so corrupt able. Splitting them up could also sort of work as a self secure mechanism where if one falls he is weekend then the 2 that remain so they in turn can stop him. That is just my 2 cents though

Kind of reminds me of the addage, "give power to those who do not seek it." Ebyssian can be the rock that binds the black dragons to each other while wrathion and sabellion squabble to rule and prove they are galaxybrains

Leadership is not about being in charge, it is about taking care of people in your charge. Ebyssian doesn't seek out leadership, he is a leader when the situation calls for it. That's why he should be the Aspect

When I saw this for the first time in game, I almost cried, it was incredibly touching. And I 100% agree with you on Ebyssian should be the next aspect. I like Dumbledores reasoning on this. Neither of the two vying for leadership are very good for it. Wrathion tried to force a winner between the armies he felt was best so he could stop the legion, and Sebelian just hid in Outland, but Ebonhorn, he has compassion. Dumbledores quote "“It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.”"

I figured something was up when you could earn full rep with both Sabellion AND Wrathion. Just didn't make sense since they both offer pretty much the same rewards. No surprise then that neither would actually be chosen. Anyone else catch Tali calling Ebyssian Emberthal at 7:27? Sure it's just a simple mistake but I had to laugh when he said Emberthal was the moose-cow we need . I'm pretty sure she would take offense.

The other thing about Ebonhorn as aspect is that while he knows comparatively little about dragons, he knows a *lot* about community and leadership by being an advisor and spiritual leader to generations of chiefs. An idea that ties in well with the blue plotline about rebuilding family.

Except for the teeny tiny detail that Sabellian has an entire flight that he has raised, nurtured, protected, and lead for years now. Not to mention the eggs that he brought to the Life Pools. The only way this happens in a believable manner is if Sabellian himself chooses Ebyssian as the new Aspect and they follow him.

Ebyssian is the balance both Wrathion and Sabellian lack. Sabellian puts his people first and that's fair, but it also seeming like that's all he's really concerned about. While Wrathion does actually care about the planet and wants to protect it, he's still pretty rash and could probably still inadvertently cause something like the Legion invasion again lol.

And I say that as someone who has a main that helped create Wrath with Rhea, then went and committed atrocities on Wrath's behalf to get shiny daggers, then died a lot for cloaks... twice and, okay, I have a soft spot for Wrathion and feel responsible somewhat for his existence and want his redemption so I feel better about my character's life choices but the choice was always Ebyssian for me. Oh, and I helped Sab in Outland but who the heck remembers that? Anyway, Ebyssian for Aspect 2023/24/??.

If they can pull this off, I can totally see all 4 of Neltharion's Children (Emberthal, Ebyssian, Wrathion, and even Sabellian) being the ones to not only bring a new age for the black dragons but even inadvertently redeem Neltharion (not Deathwing, but the dragon he once was before the corruption) by becoming better people that can lead the black dragonflight as a family. From what I have been seeing so far from what we found from the vaults we have been delving into, it seems a lot of these 4 may just inherited various qualities from their father. Not only stepping away from the behaviors that had Neltharion fall to madness but perhaps the biggest key to their development, will be to openly admitting to and taking responsibility for their mistakes. Something that I believe Neltharion was never able to do. If we find out in the next coming patch that the reason for everything Neltharion did from creating the dracthyr and keeping his research a secret to accepting the voids power and even imprisoning the dracthyr, was because he dedicated his life and soul to protecting the world and all of those he cared about no matter what the cost along with believing he was Atlas bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders along with the burden of knowing the truth about the titans but couldn't tell his own beloved aspect kin the truth out of fear they would turn on him just as they did the primalists. The realization could not only provide the catalyst for the aspects to regain their powers after forgiving the Dragon Nelthaion once was, but also bring new interesting events, like perhaps the dragons organizing a "Burial" for Neltharion in hopes that his chapter will finally rest in peace.

emberthal isnt a specific child of Neltharion, as the dracthyr are NOT a natural species, but engineered. neither is Wrathion (wrathion is actually grandchild)

I honestly just want him to be the aspect bcuz there are more races in the world then humans and elves. If I had it my way I'd make Blue with more trolls, red with dwarves, green is okay, black with tauren and bronze literally anything else.

There will probably a cut scene in the future, Wrathion & Sabellion will be arguing about who becomes Aspect, Emberthal will cut in & say neither should be, that Ebyssian should be the Aspect & those two stay as they are. All 3 will disagree. Can't decide which will be the first to agree, can't decide between Sabellion or Wrathion, it could be either. Could also happen after we fully bring back Tyr & he could be the one who agrees. Would say his opinion would have some significant weight to it? I believe Steve said during an interview that the players choosing between the 2 had zero impact on who becomes Aspect, that it is already decided internally. Now you could say it was just for a bit of fun & engagement. However you could also say it's because neither of them were ever going to become the Aspect & the entire choosing between the two is evident as to why neither are suitable & to put the players focus on those two not Ebyssian. They're solely focusing on this one thing that isn't exactly important right now, yes they are doing important things along the way like with the eggs, but their main goal is to be Aspect. Unlike Ebyssian who is doing things & helping because that's what is important & his focus. Not who gets to be Aspect, but actually fixing the flight & their issues is what is important. To me at least, a part of the Blue Flight story for Kalec is that being the Aspect isn't everything. It's the flight that matters. Which is a part of why they don't have their Aspect powers back despite having all their stones lit. They thought that if they got the stones lit the last one would work & they would get their powers back, but it didn't work. As there is more to it. My memory is a little fuzzy on it but wasn't Kalec becoming Aspect somewhat similar? He wasn't originally after the power, but because he cared about the flight & doing right he was "chosen" in the ritual. But I could be wrong on that one, I only remember bits & pieces of the story.

Ebyssian is the only one going out there to work with the Dracthyr. He's getting to the bottom of things. He will be the one to make the right connection with them.
