Watching this on my 1-week old 2022 G14 (cheaper model with RX 6700S). Completely agreed, not many cons with this except for the higher base price (starts at $1649) and it runs hot. But as you've seen here, limiting the CPU power to 45W you really don't lose that much performance and still hit R23 multicore in the 12000s. You can also tone down the CPU boost max frequency a bit to reduce certain cores from hitting 90C+ (at the cost of trading some single core performance - negligible impact on multicore). With these changes you can game with CPU in the mid-high 80Cs. I do wish we will have some undervolting options for CPU/GPU going forward, as even taking 10-15W off this laptop will help massively with the thermals. Also, if you are having issues with shutdowns, make sure you have the latest BIOS (308) installed. BTW if anyone was interested, I'm getting graphics score of 8246 with RX 6700s pulling 100W constantly during TimeSpy. So that is a around 1000 point bump with RX 6800S. You will need to decide if that 12% GPU performance improvement is worth the extra $250 or not.

Btw I returned the Alienware x17 w/ rtx3070 because I felt it was too much money, and it missed some key features, while not being very portable. Beautiful machine though.

Great review as usual. I was really excited about this, but the version I'd want (6900hs, 6700s, FHD screen in GREY) doesn't look like it'll be available anytime soon. I've kinda talked myself into the updated legion 7. The use case for me for the integrated GPU is on a plane when you're wattage limited. Also, I'd imagine it's pretty silent.

A 10 hour battery life w/ integrated graphics only is really great! I bought the first Zephyrus G14 model, because I wanted a hybrid gaming/coding/general work laptop, and I'm pleased with their more recent decisions. This is a device for people who want a powerful portable machine with solid gaming support, not necessarily the best gaming support. I'm deciding between getting this model when it's on sale later on or a Steam Deck + a newer Macbook Air later this year.

Asus will serve you far better than a MacBook. The extra power, upgradability, and ports are worth it. Unless you listen to daddy apple, or have a dongle fettish, it's an easy decision.

I also have the first Asus G14. I got the base model and it was decent for gaming at the time with the GTX 1650. The GPU is a bottleneck now, but the CPU still holds its own Ryzen 7 4800HS. I am thinking of upgrading my laptop now, but it is plenty powerful for what I do (data analysis in R, productivity tasks, school). It helps that I added a 8gb kingston hyper x impact 8gb ram stick and a samsung 980 evo ssd 1tb.

!!! If I understand it correctly, there are actually TWO versions of this laptop (RAM-wise) : a) 16 GB (which is 8GB solded + 8GB DIMM in the slot) and b) 32 GB (which is 16GB solded + 16GB DIMM in the slot) !!! I did my homework, searching for anything an everything about this laptop, and accidentally came by an ad on eBay where someone was selling this laptop with 40GB of RAM. Well, how could this be? There are no 24GB DIMMs - as far as I know. Therefore, he had the 16GB version with 8GB RAM solded on the mainboard and he simply added 32GB DIMM into the slot (instead of the second 8GB DIMM which he removed from the "factory setup"). The second "top-RAM" setup would be (as Jarrod pointed out here) : 16GB (solded on the mainboard + 32GB DIMM into the slot = 48GB of total RAM. Please correct me if I'm wrong. P.S.: how do you like (or hate) this laptop "pick-up thing" when you open the lid? I've never had an ASUS ROG laptop in my hands, so was thinking, how weird this would be when opening and closing it every day?

Asus must be sending reviewers g14’s that are inspected beforehand because I’ve yet to hear about backlight bleed issues. I’ve already went through 2 G14’s (2022) that suffered from excessive backlight bleed. Noticeable while gaming as well. Finally gave up and did a full return.

IPS Glow is a normal thing, and backlight bleed should greatly reduce over time. A new screen will always look worse than a 'broken in' one.

Also, I wish the one RAM module was not soldered, and that it came in black! Where in the world did you get your black model? It seems like a driver update should fix the iGPU battery drain.

Great review, though one thing I would have liked to see is you compare it to the last year's model when showing off things like the display in things like a HDR/SDR video playback as it gives us a better understanding of the improvements and a speaker comparison by playing a song or clip between the two even if it's not the best way to hear how they sound in my opinion it is better than just saying telling us that the speakers are a bit better. Gamers might not care as much for such things however since this can be an everyday laptop as well such comparisons are helpful.

I recently did a review on the macbook pro (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6u3oWagjMelq9U) and occasionally I will cover creator laptops, but the audience prefers gaming content. In the past the response to creator laptop content hasn't been worth the effort required to make them. For example, the macbook video made about $300 which doesn't pay for testing time let alone the cost of a paying for a macbook (which, fortunately, I didn't have to).

How low can you set the wattage for Eco-mode? Playing with igpu means that the battery life is the same if total used wattage is the same as with the dgpu enabled. If you can limit the total igpu+cpu wattage to something like 15-20 W it would mean a noticeable upgrade in battery life during gaming. Of course it would be nice to see what kind of performance you get at such low wattage. You would certainly need to lower the resolution quite a bit to be able to play modern AAA titles.

Amazing review, the G14 has been the most interesting laptop for me since the first version was revealed two years ago. I'll try to make enough money to buy it next black friday because I care about the portability(G15 doesn't look bad either but I'll wait for the 2022 review to judge). The only deal breaker in having a gaming laptop as my main machine would be the fan noise but it looks like every laptop does at least about 40 dbs in games if you want decent performance

If screen brightness matters to you, I read the 2022 G15 will have a noticeably dimmer screen than the 2022 G14. I personally value a bright display and the greater portability so I'd get the G14.

Hi Jarrod. To people who need to hear this: Yes Mediatek WiFi cards tend to not work when booting from an Ubuntu-based distro. But rest assured that after doing all the recommended library and kernel updates post the first boot after installation, your WiFi should technically start working. This is because the Linux Kernel v5.15 and higher, supports Mediatek WiFi cards. In short kernel upgrade is the key. PS: Not sure if the latest Zephyrus lineup uses a newer version of WiFi card which Linux may or may not support. I made the statement above after testing this on Zephyrus G15 2021.

If you only have wifi for what ever reason it's kinda tricky to do updates >:) I think he's more reflecting on out of the box functionality - does linux work as soon as you install it. Many people are scared off from Linux with even the briefest hint of researching problems you are facing, diagnosing, and solving. They want a windows like experience that looks different. Some people get very frustrated when things "don't just work". While I have a long ass ethernet cable and adapter not everybody is similarly equipt, but they may still purchase this gaming laptop.

The MediaTek 7922 is quite good and competitive with the Intel AX 210. The MediaTek 7921 is alright, but not amazing, and the MediaTek RZ616 should be put into a garbage bin, as my Legion 7 2022 had it and it was a nightmare as it wasn't working out of the box in Linux, had extremely poor speeds in Windows, and caused numerous lock ups in Windows. I put an Intel AX210 and that fixed everything. That was an extra $20, but qt least you can replace it.

That deck flex was crazy. How hard were you pushing? I'm considering this laptop now but the only reason I need a new laptop is because my Dell 5515 is basically unusable due to the TouchPad having too much flex so it constantly misclicks or fails to recognize touch.

Thanks for this detailed review. Just wondering though, could the exhaust below the monitor cause screen burn over time? I mean, if you game a couple of hours, that would also heat up that part of the laptop for extended period. Bad design probably?

Doubt it, given this design has existed for years and haven't heard complaints about it. It's not as if ASUS haven't considered it and tested for it, so can only assume they don't think it's an issue (plus they told me they think it's fine based on their testing)

It would be nice to see temperatures during gaming as stress tests don't really apply to real life scenarios. Gamers will most likely run games, thus it would be great to see temps under those circumstances. Otherwise good and detailed review as always

So after hearing about the MUX switch I just bought the base G14. The MUX switch and MShybrid switch was there as shown in the armoury crate. I updated the armoury crate via the settings and it failed so I had to use the armoury crate uninstall and then reinstall the armoury crate. Well now there's no MUX switch or MS hybrid. Just the option for GPU mode ultimate, standard, Eco, and optimized which now replaces the MUX switch. function.

Yeah. it looks like new Armoury Crate has moved it. I believe Ultimate is dgpu only. The descriptions should explain them all.

Can you drop a video on whether old users of win10 should upgrade to win11 or not? I'm been keeping up with the windows11 videos you've been putting up and I saw the comment you posted in the old one saying you'll be using win11 on newer laptops and the reasoning. If I were to upgrade now to win11 would I see a decrease in performance gaming wise?
