Based on some feedback by those illustrious viewing subscribers I hear your request and reward you with some bounty.
In this episode we look at a piece of glorious nostalgia as Steed returns with two feisty crimebusting companions on his quest for writing wrongs against the diabolical mastermind and the criminal underworld.
A new era dawns but can The Avengers wake with it in '76.........
Due to some of the content in some of the programmes and the target audience this is for adults only and not for children. Some programmes are for mature audiences due to the nature of the content and ones without 18+ restrictions are best viewed by young persons of 13 years and upwards. Some of these documentaries are not for the prudish.
In this documentary series we take a look and another look and even a third glance (hypothetically speaking) of T.V programmes and Films with a 'cult' edge.
If they aren't cult currently then they should be !!
Each programme looks at the genesis of the programme or movie and a review - some are spoiler free - some are not. Even if you know the plot though it is welcoming to look at the series or movie again.
So what is it I hope for in my series ? Well it is my intention to share with you dear viewer my knowledge of things which I enjoy very much and I hope what is reviewed will inspire you to go and have a look for the programme or movie. Some you may have seen before - others may be truly novel.
That is it pure and simple - I don't want any financial rewards as I will be using snippets already copyrighted and this is damned cheeky - the knowing of sharing my knowledge with you is reward enough.
Don't forget to support the originators of copyright - so wonderful retro T.V and movies get to see the light of day.
I hope this acts as an inspiration for you to look...look and look again with me.
Every epsiode is a labour of love and it's only me and a very *basic home editing software combi which I cobbled together that produces the work.
(Update * Not so basic as using Filmora - they are wonderful)
I hope you can also see the transformation as the series goes along.
Any constructive comments, criticisms and memories you have would be most welcome and if you love what I do hit like and subscribe.
Thank you to all the regular people that bite off this nugget of nostalgia and follow my little show.
Maybe you could suggest things for me to look please share them.
No infringement is intended - I am a novice to this and sometimes oblivious to the complex world of copyright but all clips and music are used in the faith of enhancing this review. On occasion one picture can be worth a 1000 words and can give you a feel of the show or movie reviewed.
Enjoy - Crab xx

Another fine review! I appreciate how you present the realities of making a television series, positive & negative. An argument at the time was that The New Avengers was too dramatic &, to be frank, too dull. I think, though, that a lot of that perception has to do with it's initial broadcast on American television. For its first run in the US, this brand new series was screened as the CBS Late Movie in a 70 minute slot that started at 11:30 pm...! I'm a fan of the show & its stars (all of them, every series), but I have to tell you it was difficult to stay alert until 1 o'clock in the morning, with at least double the amount of commercials at every break. It broke any tension or suspense, & when a fight or action scene finally happened, it seemed like it was over before it had begun. CBS was happy - they regularly touted the show's performance and ratings. They eventually even resurrected reruns of the original Avengers series in the same time-slot, rather than order a new batch of New Avengers episodes, sadly. Of course, on home video & it plays MUCH better in its 50 minute, commercial free glory. One quibble (& it isn't huge, I hope) is that I really enjoyed "Emily" (& the other Canadian episodes "Complex" & "Forward Base"). I found "Trap" to be the hands down worst episode of the entire series, but that's just me. I think the producers this time around took a calculated risk making the series more international & realistic. Brian Clemens said as much, indicating the desire was to reach a larger audience than before. Unfortunately, a big selling point of the original series was the very British setting. I personally didn't want our heroes to rely on other agencies, French, Canadian or American, & certainly didn't need to see them anywhere but England. Anyway, great job putting together such a concise overview. Your selection of clips, still photos & other illustrations keep things rolling along. I'll be catching up with more of your channel's reviews as time permits!

It was a massive endeavour especially trying to bring back such a popular, iconic show in a different time but it adapted so well. As I was discussing with another subscriber it's a shame this hasn't been given the blu ray treatment. I prefer the first to the 2nd series of T.N.A it's more grittier and although the opening credits aren't as stylised as the lion - the montage of clips with that cracking bit of 70's funk is perfection. I loved this show immensely. 🦀

The 2 most athletic Steed partners are of course first Blackman. As a State sider who only saw and loved the Rigg episodes the second partner that was the most surprising is Lumley! And, can she run, and in high heels too. No leather suit as climbs fences and hurtles obstacles. And, yes she did most of her own stunts. Both Rigg and Macnee used stunt doubles. And, in the B & W episodes they used a male stunt double for Rigg!

After shooting a French champagne advert in 1975. Brian Clements asked Diana Rigg if she wanted to come back and play the role of Emma Peel again for the entire series of The Avengers. Diana Rigg said no for a return of role of Emma Peel. This is well before the episode called the Last of the Cybernauts. Again, she asked to play Emma Peel as one off special appearance, but a fee could not be agreed on. Also, when Diana turned down a come back to The Avengers. That was going to be the title of the series. So Brian Clements asked Linda Thornson to come back to play the role of Tara King again for the entire series of The Avengers, Linda Thornson said no. This left Brian Clements thinking he had to start a fresh with an idea. To change the title from The Avengers to New Avengers with in mind casting 2 more assistance to Patrick Macnee. In which The New Avengers would be totally different to The Avengers' 1960's series. Now, if Diana Rigg or Linda Thornson reprise their role, then the Avengers would have taken off. Instead of giving the Title of The New Avengers, it just would be The Avengers or Return of The Avengers would have worked.

Thank you for filling in a few more gaps. Maybe Rigg was due to star in K is for Kill in a guest role as she does feature in it but only in the form of a clip from an original 1967 Avengers episode. It's a shame. Many actors and actresses seem to close the curtains on their previous series. It would have been lovely to see her pop up again or Thorson for sure. I guess the only one to re-appear was Ian Hendry but he wasn't Keel. Dream episode would have been all The Avengers returning and joining the New to combat intercrime. Have a great Christmas and New Year thanks for taking the time to comment. Best 🦀

A classic series and fondly remembered , although the intermediate series with Linda Thorson , Honor Blackman and Diana Rigg were undoubtedly the best . Series 2 of TNA were definitely on the wane , and the episodes filmed in Canada were absolutely dire . I know TNA was in part sponsored by British Leyland , but Steed's Jaguar apart ( which got a good showing in The Three Handed game ) , most of the vehicles were pretty dire too , and looked even more out of place in Canada than they did in the UK based episodes . Steed should have kept his Bentley , or possibly been given something like a Bristol 411 , Gambit ought to have driven something like a Jensen Interceptor , Purdey might have driven something like a Mercedes Paoda SL , or perhaps an E-Type . Although Patrick MacNee is sadly no longer with us , someone like Benedict Cumberbatch could potentially pick up the bowler hat for a 21st century revival with a suitable female lead , perhaps getting back to being a twosome and closer to the successful 60s format .

I thought one of the reasons they added Gambit was the realization that Steed couldn't be asked to do some of the fight scenes or more rigorous action sequences. I thought the first season was fine, and like a couple of the episodes from season 2. I wasn't surprised that the series was cancelled. With iffy financing it was doomed.

Wonderful nostalgia - thank you for sharing them with us all. Its cool how our heroes influence us as children. I always used to want to be Van Helsing as a child. We used to play in the road and i used to chase my friends as vampires and my best mate Darren used to be Dracula we even used to play in the churchyard and do scenes with our own sharpened stakes made from fence posts - something unbelievable now but life was so free back then. Also recall doing the Avengers on the beach with my mate Mark wanting to be Emma Peel - all was fun until Mark got carried away and broke another lads nose with a high kick underestimating distance and his strength. After a stint at A&E we decided not to do it again so we opted to do superheroes instead and a friend Tanya was wonder woman she spun around, made herself giddy and fell through her Nans greenhouse - hilarious memories looking back. Thanks for the nostalgic trigger. Very Best Crab 🦀 x

lucky enough to grow up at perfect age for both Series - like Doctor Who, some episodes were more than a little eerie.. Shall never forget the sound of the electric milk float, or cybernaut karate chop, or... Theme tune for original Series was epic...annoyingly modernised / dummed down in the second series Diana Rigg and Jo Purdey were epic - apparently I slept in same bed as Joanna...but not at the same time :( - in Peter Gabriel's old 'Big Thatch' Patrick? - Uniquely debonair, the archetypal true British gent :)

I loved both the originals and the NEW Avengers as a child browing up in British Columbia. A little more than a decade later I was working with a company in Toronto associated with Alliance Atlantis and we began work on a restoration of at least the Canadian episodes. I remember securing 2” TV Master Tapes, reviewing some of them and getting ready for scans, as a fan and being a part of my growing up, it was rather exciting to be a involved. But there were hiccups in both the financing AND determining who actually owned the Canadian rights any more. Sadly my boss, Derek McGillivray, who had hoped to re-sell the series to Specialty Channel TV and on DVD died suddenly and I lost track of what happened to those master broadcast tapes after that. Of course those 2” video masters were produced from the filmed originals.

Thank you for your comment YC, The Prisoner does indeed seem most appropriate for LLALA, I have no plans currently but will most certainly research it and view it again for potentially next season. I welcome suggestions and if I have the source material I will definately mould a review for it. I never really got into The Prisoner which is surprising but I have revisited a lot of programmes and movies since creating these programmes and as my viewers have learned so much and enjoyed them more on a second viewing so The Prisoner may be one of those. I also suggest a series called The Champions which you may enjoy. The Avengers is must see TV that nails the essence of the 60's and British eccentricity albeit through rose tinted spectacles. I would heartily recommend you give the Diana Rigg monochrome season a go but am prejudicial in my advice as this is/was my favourite season but all of them are good. The Cathy Gale stories are more drier due to budget and restrictions as we are talking TV nearly 60 years ago but they also have some decent examples of cultness. I will look into the Prisoner for sure. Enjoy. Crab

The new Avengers almost got there but due to hit and miss stories hindered by the headaches of production - it always seems to be the bridesmaid and never the bride, never reaching it's full potential ; it's well overdue for a re-appraisal. THE NEW AVENGERS U.S. AND U.K. DVD Sets are now both out of print with no sign ion reissue and LAST OF THE CYBERNAUTS...? was issued on Blu-ray via a single disc containing all three Cybernaut shows from the two Peel seasons and LAST, but that is now also out of print. Someone needs to pick up the show (maybe the great Via Vision label in Australia, who has issued spectacular expanded Blu-ray sets of all the filmed original AVENGERS seasons) and finally give NEW AVENGERS the HD treatment. Unlike the Technicolor of the last few seasons of the original show, Rank labs processed NEW AVENGERS, giving it a slightly darker look, but a good look that is pretty consistent and unique to itself, for whatever reasons. If the 35mm negatives hold up, then the set could look as spectacular as the original show, or other shows made at the time like KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER and even (to mu continued shock) BUCK ROGERS with Gil Gerard. It may not always be a great show and did not have huge budgets, but WOW was it shot well.

Shout! has SAINT rights here, while maybe A&E/Lionsgate somehow still has U.S. rights to all AVENGERS, but Via Vision may surprise us all yet!

As usual hon informative and Fun, ....i will abstain from my humble PERSONAL opinion on this show since i've run out of brown paper bags....HOWEVER, you brought the series coverage right up to it's conclusion in fine style, and like you said there are many who would've liked to see it and many more youngsters out there to come. Now, i've been wracking my brains for a potnetial subject for you to think about covering IN THE FUTURE, and....i can't think of one....except Jason King & Department S. Howsabout giving those a whirl. Anyway, i've been watching several of your vids tonight and now it's time i retired off to nod. Thanks again, lots of memories and look forward to watching more later. See ya. x

If you've run out of paper bags then I need a bucket of water for my swelling head. All my subscribers comments give me the motivation to carry on as you will no doubt realise this is a labour of love and time consuming but I enjoy it so very much and there are, fortunately, a lot of appreciate people out there such as yourself. I can see you've had a Look...Look and Look Again-A-Thon and I am delighted. I will definately consider a review of Department S but am currently stacked with lots to take into consideration. With exception of Sapphire and Steel my coverage of ITC shows is rather spartan. The Champions could also be a contender maybe ? Anyway I hope I haven't exhausted your synapses with a nostalgia overload. Best - Crab x

@Crab Apple Sapphire and Steel were on every night at 2300hrs last month. I remember The Champions, Sharon Macready, Craig Stirling and Richard Barrett. I remember their boss Tremayne with the beard. I saw him later on in a black and white Alien Invaders movie. He was the scariest thing in that movie, half man half dog. The Protectors are still on this month. Too late in the night for even me. Harry Rule, Paul Buchet and The Contessa. For nostalgia we watch a lot of The Sony Channel with The Persuaders, Danny Wilde and Lord Sinclair, The New Avengers and other greats, ITV4 with Randall and Hopkirk deceased, The Avengers, It's Tara King at the moment, The Forces TV, UFO and Bless this House 🥰🇯🇲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🕊️🔥✝️

I was in junior high when I first read that they were doing this series. Having already been my favorite series ( since grade 2!!), I couldn't wait for it to be broadcast. I remember being sad that Linda Thorson wouldn't be back, but about 2 minutes into the first episode, I knew Joanna Lumley was a great choice and that Purdey was, indeed, a true " Avengers Girl"! I can't say which season I preferred as there were episodes in both seasons, that I quite liked. I think that the episodes shot in Canada were actually quite good ( though I do agree with you regarding " Emily"....ugh!). However, I must admit " Forward Base" is probably my favorite as it reminded me the most of the original series. I hated " Killer" from season 6 of the original series but thought " Complex" was a far better take on that theme. This series should have had another season at least. Either way, we got to see Steed for 26 more episodes....and that ain't bad! Cheers! AND JOANNA JUST BECAME A " DAME". BRAVO JOANNA!!

I liked complex very much - probably my favourite of the canada series is The Gladiators as its quite gritty but am a fan of Forward Base for sure. It would have been great to see a 3rd series but funds and poor syndication scuppered that - i guess in its latter dsys something was better than nothing at all.

I remember watching the New Avengers as a small boy and I loved it Its a shame it was never re-run and had more episodes. Joanna Lumley is just a absolutely gorgeous Woman and added so much Classy sex appeal to this show and many men watched it because of her, and Joanna caused a fashion statement with her famous hairstyle in this show and her beautiful way she moved and persona breathtaking Woman. Patrick Macnee had a role in the James Bond movie A view to a Kill alongside Roger Moore. Gareth Hunt, did the coffee adverts for many years. I would love to watch all the episodes of the new Avengers again although its almost impossible to get hold of videos of the show.

Thanks for your comment. It was mentioned by another subscriber that this smashing little programme is now hard to find. As it was on film i am surprised it hasnt been given a blu ray release. I was expecting it in the u.k. after the tara king blu ray releases but apart from the episode the last of the cybernauts it seems the well has dried. Its a shame my channel didnt have its own label otherwise its a series i would definitely look at releasing for sure. I dont know who owns the rights now and as the dreaded copyright wrangles are a nightmare i am sure its blocked by some technicality. Such a shame. Best crab🦀

I have always been fan of the Avengers, but what seems kill series, The Steed/Tara King Original series. And the New Avengers( 2nd Season) was scheduling by networks. Also moving New Avengers out of Britain to Canda was terrible idea. After all this series 100% British.

I disagree with the King/Steed series although it did have some doofers but it was longer than previous seasonsc- featured worst episode 'Pandora' imho. I agree with the 2nd series it became a bit naff but thete are some highlights, enjoyed Complex and The Gladiators. Crab🦀

It was o.k but by the 2nd series they abandoned it and opted for relationships outside and above. Thats where the show took a dip. Can remember that awful one with Purdey and her ex - think it was 'obsession' ? Awful. 😬🦀

True but I feel New had its charms for sure - it went for corny rather than sophisticated and the style of the 60's paved way for a grittier time (and challenges) for our duo. It was a brave attempt for such a hard act to follow for sure.

Hi Sweetie. Listen i have a question....since Linda Thorson was a fave in France, and had alreaday made the commercial, was she even asked if she wanted to do the new series? I'm just curious cos i liked her, and i know Clemens did not. TY X

Hi Princess, I believe that due to the fresh approach that the producers felt was needed and to get away from the 60's vibe to a more grittier 70's style I would of imagined they'd have passed her by. Also based on how Thorson was treated as Tara King initially would have made her think twice. By the time casting was taking place Thorson was also busy on other projects seemingly. So I guess the New Avengers had to evolve into what it became without her. 🦀x

Hi thank you for the positive feedback - inspires me to bring you more. I think , in answer to your question, Thorson wasnt. By then she probably went onto other things. I think the producers wanted to emphasise The New and at one stage were thinking of doing it without our Steed (unforgiveable) . Unless of course anyone else can help - but thats as far as i know. Take care and once again thanks for taking the time to comment . Crab 🦀

The French wanted Linda, but it did not work out, though a single episode where she retired for some reason would have been nice. She does show up in an episode of RETURN OF THE SAINT with Ian Ogilvy, who showed up in one of her AVENGERS episodes, so it was a nice reunion

I 've seen at least half of The Avengers dubbed in French (my second language:'Chapeau melon et bottes de cuir' was very popular in the French part of my country as well as in France). Funny to learn that the reboot from the seventies started of with a French commercial...more than 40 years ago

The Avengers was very chic - BCBG as the French say so it is no wonder how successful it was over the water. Arguably one of the U.K's biggest visual exports. If it wasn't British I would say it would be French - if that makes sense. Probably not the very early ones but certainly when Emma Peel donned her leathers and Steed had his clothes designed by Pierre Cardin a further nod to that exquisite French charm. It would've been great if Steed and Emma or Tara King had at least a couple of face offs with Parisienne diabolical masterminds! Best Crab 🦀

@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN I got to know the New Avengers from Dutch TV back in 1977 or '78: On Thursday evenings. I was 8 or 9 back then. What fascinated me about it was its 'fantastic' streak. In retrospect, a bit Doctor Who-like: it was supposedly a spy series, but there was always this bizarre, fantastic unexplainable aspect to it. I only learned a bit later from my parents, uncles and aunts that there was an earlier version in black and white of this series, which I got to know a bit later on, from French and Belgian-French TV (with Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson - if I remember well the Thorson version was also in colour) Having (re)watched it (the New Avengers) several times as a grown up, I think - unlike these 'others' - that the chemistry between the 3 leads is obvious and awesome and the dialogue is extremely witty and funny. Purdey's wit is so close to Joanna Lumley's , imho, they couldn't have made a better choice. Moreover, if there ever had to be a female Bond (Roger Moore style), It should have been Lumley. Anyway, thank you for this video!

You're very welcome and thank you fir taking the time to comment with your memories. A few weren't keen in the lumley-hunt-macnee dynamic but I , as you, feel there was a decent chemistry and I feel The New Avengers is just as good as it's 60's era.
