The design is growing on me. I particularly appreciate it if watch brands dare to be different, rather just feeding into popular trends. This is not easy as they are often lambasted for their quirkiness. I really admire that, which is why I much prefer the time when Christopher Ward had their logo at 9, the Tudor P01 is by far my favourite watch by Tudor, etc. Each to their own… Thanks for another thought-provoking video, Bruce.

Went and handled the white dial, blue bezel model today at the AD. I was converted instantly it’s stunning and the square minutes hand works perfectly with the hour markers. I’ll be having one of these thank you Mr breitling.

Reading the comments, you can see that this new collection is polarizing. I love the whole collection. The day before yesterday I received my turquoise Superocean on a rubber strap. The Kelly Slater is coming in November. I am full of joy. Your videos are great too.

Still prefer the previous model, but at least Breitling continue to make watches with personality. Unlike Tudor for example, which yes, are built well, but seem designed purely to be instagrammable, when in fact in person they are just plain bland. Maybe I am just bitter because most of their models wear too small for my larger wrists, whereas breitling have always catered for me.

No, actually you are right. Breitling has always had, does have and seems will stay true to its character.. Tudors are really nice watches and good value for money, but at least in my view from practical experience have failed to motivate me in the long run

Breitling does have access to Tudor's MT5612 movement but it's 6.5 mm thick compared to ETA's 4.6 mm. That's almost 2 mm. The additional power reserve would be nice to have but I prefer the existing proportions of the case. It's a better trade-off.

I really like this watch. I checked it out in person at the boutique. Seeing it in person really helps get a good opinion of it. Great video. Based on comments from some of the folks involved with Breitling, the movement was chosen because it was thin and because it was they could get a large volume of them.

That makes a sense. Plus, you have the B20 in the heritage line for those that really want the caliber. Like I mentioned, not a dealbreaker to me.

I dig the brand and thoroughly enjoyed the last iteration, I think this is also a super fun release. Most haters are missing the direction that they are going with this, which is that trendy, fun, yet tool capable watch. They are trying to be a bit different from other brands, while still pulling in elements from many of them. I enjoy this because lately it really feels like brands are listening to what people want. My only gripe, and this is a big one, is the price. I thought the last gen was so enticing because you got so much watch for your money with the backing of a great brand. At 5k this is too much, especially with the likes of Tudor dropping that pelagos 39 at a lower price with a bracelet AND strap.

The movement does make me pause (COSC helps though), but the rest is great in person. I can definitely see the polished center link scratching complaint, but these are so nice on wrist. I tried the more navy blue 42 on bracelet, and loved it. I also tried the green 44 on rubber strap. This also was nice, and the quick adjust clasp is brilliant. There was just a touch of backplay in the bezel, but the feel was overall great. Much better than many other watches I have handled. I was definitely surprised after trying them on. I really recommend people try these on in person before dismissing them. There is definitely tough competition. Specs wise, the Seamaster 300 has it near, but I really don’t care for the HEV, and really disliked the bezel feel. I compared these back to back with the Breitling. The Tudor Pelagos offers a lot of specs for the money, and wears well on wrist, but the thinness of the Breitling is nice. That Tudor bezel feel is phenomenal though.

Hated these in pictures/videos, but I liked it a lot in the metal. I tried on a bracelet model with the green dial/bezel and I love the clasp/bracelet, the bezel is satisfyingly clicky and the muted dial looked great. I agree about the polished center link, I’m terrified of those things lol. Ultimately I wouldn’t replace my older Super Ocean with one of these, but it would be a great first Breitling IMO.

I love it! I've always been lukewarm to Breitling, but their Navi makeover earlier this year really piqued my interest, and now the SO line changes are amazing. I think 44mm is the sweet spot. I don't see the orange option in the 44mm, so I guess turquoise it will be! I also love their micro-adjust system! I think any brand that doesn't have an on the fly micro adjust system for their bracelets should be flogged in the public square. At $4700 RRP, this should be a bargain when the hype fades a little in a year or two. Should be able to pick them up well under $4K.

I agree. I think Breitling is in a better position when it comes to case design. Omega basically can't touch the Speedy and the Seamaster because they're marketed as icons. They can only do minor tweaks like Breitling does with the Navitimer. But Breitling can do whatever they want with the rest of their collections design-wise. The last two years they've been nailing it release after release.

I wasn't initially a fan of the new design, but after handling one at my AD I can certainly see the appeal. I would prefer if the hands were just a little bit longer, but that's not a dealbreaker. With the SW200 movement, it's a very nice $3,200 watch IMHO. When the list price starts pushing $5,000 there are many options with (in my opinion) nicer movements with longer power reserves (Tudor, Norqain, some Omegas).

Hey Bruce - great review. In answer to your question, talking to a Breitling insider the movement choice was entirely dictated by the shape of the watch and its size ranges: 1. this watch is designed to be thin - its about casual and fun and relaxing. A big far 14mm plus shape wasn't acceptable. 2. this watch has to have the same specs in every size - the "woman" 36 could not be a 'lessor' watch - ie less WR, or a 'lesser' movement This ruled out the Kenissi movement they make available to customers (the fat one in the original BB and the superocean heritage) and they don't offer the little one (in the 58) to anyone outside the kenissi "family" - ie Tudor and Chanel.

Initially hated the square minute hand, but have come around. Actually really enjoy the styling now. But seriously Breitling.. put a decent movement in the back, puh-leaseeee!! 🤦🏻‍♂🤦🏻‍♂ I'm looking to pick up my first premium Swiss diver, and the SuperOcean would be HIGH on the list if it just had a decent movement. Don't care that it's not in-house, just something better than a 38hr power-reserve Sellita!! Thank you 🙏🏻 Hard to go past the SMP, really.

Great review and photography as usual. I am still not sure what I think of this watch. Bold and playful for sure. Love the dimensions, case, bracelet, and clasp. But at this price point you probably want something more versatile and I am not sure this works well as an every day piece. Also, I loved the previous generation and this young upstart just doesn’t have the same gravitas. That giant square on the minute hand is a bit too cartoonish for me.

Awesome review as ever Bruce. Great balanced coverage, glorious shots and lovely pace of delivery… (you repeat yourself a lot less these days 👍🏻😉😜) On the 2 concerns, I can 100% see why they’d both be drawbacks for a lot of buyers. For me I have two angles. On the movement, 100% it’s not comparable to other in house offerings at this price. But then it’s not a watch where the value is in the movement. You buy this cos you love the design. Plain and simple. And it’s not gonna be your first / only premium watch so you don’t need another 70hr PR / Metas / inHouse / Valfleurier whatever. You’re happy to have it serviced by a local guy every 4-6 years and get on with your life. Leads me to point 2) regarding the bracelet. Because this ain’t gonna be many peoples first premium watch I wonder if they’re gonna sell more on the rubber than in the bracelet anyway. I have an Avenger GMT 43 and could absolutely see myself picking up a new SO. Do I need / want another stainless steel three link bracelet?? Or do I buy this to enjoy it on a really unique and fun rubber strap which fits better with the aesthetic anyway?? So that’d be my 2c. Thanks again for the awesome review. Glad to see you In Partnership with brands. Especially one of our favourites 😉☺️

Personally I don't mind the movement that much. It's a simple three-handed watch without complications so any caliber would move the hands around the dial just the same. When it's time to service the watch that ETA might save you $500. Also, authorized service centers are known for replacing parts rather brutally without consideration to vintage / sentimental value of the watch. However I think it's certainly within Breitling's ability to increase the power reserve. Regarding your point about bracelets, I think the watch works best on a rubber strap because of its laid-back vibe :)

I like the new model. It needed to be different and it is. Quality is great, movement and power reserve, really needs thinking about. I think if pushed and I was desperate for a dive watch with extreme impact, I'd probably go for the Avenger or the SO Heritage chrono instead.

I bought one six months ago, I had an issue with the buckle, I don't think it was crisp in terms of snapping it close. I am not sure if it was just mine or all of them feel that way, I took to the dealer who I got it from, they weren't sure if that is how it is supposed to be either. They didn't have another one with the bracelet version in stock at the time I wanted to verify either. That is my only gripe about the watch. I think the short lug to lug and thiness is what makes this Superocean so wearable. From what I gathered the MT5612/B20 is about 2mm thicker then ETA2824/SW200/B17 and the Superocean Heritage that uses B20 is about 2mm thicker than the new Superocean. I have a smaller wrist and did not considered Breitling previously due to their big chunky size untill this new Superocean came about. I half agree on the PCL as obviously Breitling wanted to make it a more blingy watch compared to the previous generation but keep it to the bracelet! Why did they put a PCL clasp for the rubber strap on a diver?!

A watch for a very niche market. IMO it’s an enthusiasts watch that might appeal to those who have the finances to play around. This is not a watch for a first time buyer. It’s not for everyday and I reckon it could lead to buyers remorse if it’s someone’s only watch.

what? It's a standard three hander. Hour, minutes, seconds. They all perform their proper function. This design was inspired by a Breitling chrono from the past, but clearly this isn't a chronograph, nor does it pretend to be.

@@jimlittle5769 Maybe you’re not aware of how the original worked. That gigantic graduated chapter ring around the dial was the main timing scale on the original. The chronograph function advanced the minute hand with the giant block on it to time things when read against that giant ring. This watch, as you said, is a basic three hander, and that huge timing scale around the dial is completely useless since it doesn’t rotate, and there is no chronograph hand to use with it. It’s all just there for show, like those 5 dollar watches at Walmart with a tachymeter bezel but no chronograph...

8:05 what if you're not rich though? (perhaps like most people). Not sure how that really is relevant as people don't just have sky dwellers, IWCs, Tudors, and Rolexes just lying around everywhere that they can interchange between. So yah, most of us not relating with that perspective so not really relevant for the vast majority if ur trying to make an argument for "variety" lol.

$4.7k for a watch with a 38 hour power reserve, 3rd party movement? Naw, I'll pass on that.

Well, people pay waaay more than that for watches without even AR, so in contrast, a 3rd party movement seems reasonable in this Breitling.

Sorry, looks like a pre-schooler designed this watch. Great materials and execution for what it is, but……yeah, Crayola watch.

Breitling should give this pre schooler a raise then. Awesome design

1:16 I want to be 100% clear here. It has absolutely nothing to do with the colors, and everything to do with the new design 🤣.

Oh, and I guess the huge disappointment that we didn't get an upgraded movement that competes with the other players in this pricing segment. We're still stuck with the same 38 hour power reserve modified ETA 2824, Breitling? Really? At almost 5k? That's almost laughable.

Want to like this watch but the white on the dial is too big, the square on the minutes dial is ugly and a ETA movement, really 👎

Still overcharging for a simple ETA movement. Way overpriced.
