Saw the 415 in up-close action down in Corsica, many a time. Sometimes, they came so close to the road that her engine propwash actually shook my car! They were skimming the forest fire at no more than maybe 10-15 meters of altitude, on the right side of the road which was engulfed in flames and smoke. That was a sight to see, and I can't be thankful enough for the bravery of our fire fighters and the ruggedness of the Canadair.

If you google the price of this aircraft, it's currently listed as 37 million dollars and it hauls 1600 gallons. The current price of the Air Tractor Fire Boss is 3 million dollars, ready to go and they haul 800 gallons each. The latest research by the US forest service does in fact say that a flying boat is the most efficient machine in regards to water delivered per hour on a fire, but one Canadair 515 cannot out work 4 or 5 Fire Bosses, also 5 Air Tractors would be less expensive to acquire than one 515 with lots of money left over for fuel and parts

@@robertdonnelly434 Actually i think they have that. But the 415 is a seaplane that loads from water local to the fire, which gives it a faster turn around. A lot of people don't know that Leland Snow originally designed the AT802 as a water bomber. He adapted it for crop dusting, as farmers wanted the larger version. So the 802 is another specifically designed water bomber. Yes it was not originally a scooper. Also the one gentleman in the video said the 415 was the benchmark for 50 years @3:00. The 415 didn't enter production until 2003. That math doesn't work is you ask me.

Comparing scoopers with land based air tankers is just bad business. It’s like comparing a Shovel with a Polaski. They are both used to fight fire but with completely different tactics and strategies. Using scoopers and land based tankers together, one to slow spread and reduce intensity and the other to provide long term containment is really where they show there true firefighting worth. The 414, 515 would also be amazing at delivering para-cargo to wildfires and other natural disasters. It would be a fantastic jump ship for smoke jumpers or SAR Techs.
@jameson1239
@jameson1239 2 жыл бұрын
No the land based super tankers and this do the exact same job they spray the perimeter to keep the fire from spreading while people on the ground dig fire lines to contain it permanently as well as providing quick response in case a fire jumps a line you can’t permanently contain a forest fire by dropping retardant it doesn’t matter what aircraft it dropping it because the retardant doesn’t last long enough the only way to “put out” a forest fire is to remove the fuel from the surrounding area so the fire can’t spread and let it burn itself out or in extreme cases wait for winter rain

Their helicopter comparison is out to lunch... any water source that the 415 can fill out of a type 1 can fill at a rate 2x as fast especially one so close as to allow up to 150 drops per day with the skimmer! That doesn't take into consideration that a bucket ship can generally find water much closer... A CH-47 will have almost 3x the capacity... I don't understand the "limited Autonomy" of the helicopter? thats backwards! Don't get me wrong the 415 is a great ship... but don't forget its just another tool in the kit...

I would say that the loads per day for a helicopter (tanker or bucket) are way off. As with a 415 it all based on water location and distance from the fire, and fuel location and distance from the fire. I have had more than 200 tank loads per day on a fire with the fuel and water locations with a short distance to the fire where the bombers are in need of an airport for fuel and in the case of retardant aircraft their retardant load.

Con los incendios actuales en Chile (enero y febrero 2023) no sé que esperan el gobierno o las empresas forestales para comprar al menos un par de estos modelos, déjense de adquirir un par de f-15 o eurofighter, los combates a futuro son por el cambio climático.

Has Canadair looked at the possibility of retrofitting more powerful engines, such as the Alison T56 family of engines?

The CL-415 has plenty of power. 5000hp in total. I flew them for 2 years. All the crashes have been from inept flying skills, not lack of power.
