The New Celine TikTok Collection Is Kinda Brilliant

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's happened. Hedi Slimane did a TikTok collection for Celine. Inspired by the e-boys winning the hearts of young teens, the newest SS 2021 Celine collection draws direct inspiration from these TikTok stars and while there is plenty to laugh at, I think its one of Hedi's most interesting collections for the french house yet. Is this a joint effort by the Chinese government and Hedi to gather precious teen internet data? Probably not. Is this a calculated move by Celine to attract new zoomer buyers? Most likely!
Let me know what you guys thought of the collection in the comments below. Did I miss any key elements? Should I have been more critical? For the Hedi Heads, did I still fail to pay enough homage to his design genius? For everyone else, does Hedi have bigger bags under his eyes or me?

2:47 You could make an argument that the eboy "movement's" sociopolitical position is that of rejecting what is considered traditionally masculine and normalizing things that have long been labeled as feminine (an interest in fashion, use of makeup/nail polish/jewelry, even just good hygiene to an extent) among young boys. It might not be as in your face or as intentional as that of the hippies/punks/etc, but it's still a very real factor that's having an impact on society.

I agree with you, and also GenZ is tied to social justice, equality, and anti-discrimination of any type. What we loose with looking back at punks, hippies, skinheads etc was that in fact during their time most were just along for the ride and weren't activist in presenting their values.

Shogun back with the always powerful comments - this i feel like is 1 of the best suggestions for how to try and identify what makes the aesthetic/movement stand out. And I initially did include in the original recording talking about how Hedi included skirts / kilts which does seem to signal to e-boys ease with adopting femininity

I do agree with your perspective on this collection and on Hedi Slimane overall. Say what you will about him and his design aesthetic/decisions, but he definitely has his eye on a different horizon than the rest of the design world. He’s just unapologetic about it. The reception to This particular show reminds me of a designer who waaay back in 1992 presented a collection not only inspired by grunge but trotted out direct copies of the look on the models, of course the difference being the luxury fabrics and tailoring. This was for Perry Ellis which was considered a luxury brand then, and the designer was Marc Jacobs who was subsequently fired from the brand because of this now considered iconic collection.

I saw the comments on Instagram and I was really puzzled, because I had LOVED it. Really polarizing, bizarrely, but I loved each and every look. Worth noting, that I haven't been a Slimane fan historically but he won me over. I did end up buying his quilted C bag which was vilified and discontinued after just two seasons. Meh, they're nuts. It's a kick-ass bag, amazingly designed. I have a Classic Box bag and although I love it, I have to admit the C bag is superior in user experience.
@BraveNewWear
@BraveNewWear 4 жыл бұрын
Well Hedi knows its better to be polarizing that boring, thats something he does well - in terms of the bags it was kind of inevitable considering how celebrated Phoebe's bags at Celine were and Hedi's new designs were immediately a change of pace. The Quilted C bag shouldnt be vilified thats silly, it does look like Chanel's classic flap but its a relatively simple design. Now you can say you have a limited released bag tho!

Hello Christian once again, awesome video. While I'm not a fan of tiktok I can personally see how Hedi is trying to attract more customers with it through this move which from a business standpoint, makes sense. Perhaps these pieces from this collection could potentially reach Raf archive levels of resale price in 10-20 years down the road???

Speaking for myself, I don't like the subculture that he modeled the collection after, not in style or philosophy/values, so I wouldn't want to buy the clothing and try to embody that culture. Despite picking a subculture that most of us in this community dislike, the clothes can still look good and be wearable, and I don't think he achieved that. I think after sticking to his "look" for long, and then so drastically changing it, he needed to do better. This comparison has been done before, but the clothes truly look like Forever 21 recreating 90s trends in a cheap, disingenuous way (which is what they had in their stores anyway). The clothes just look bad. Hedis team has recreated the look of a subculture who has stolen a look their look from other subcultures we actually appreciate and enjoy because of their passion and message, like goth and punk. I thin hedi could have stuck with the eboy thing, but done it in a better way, with more wearable and good looking clothes that fit better into Hedis world. I have never felt that Hedi needed to change, I liked that he was perfecting what worked for him, and it was another perspective in the world of fashion with a bunch of wanna be innovators. I do feel like picking tik tok was gimmicky and strictly for the sake of marketing and selling, and he could've used any buzzword that kids are using and it would have had the same effect, it's just brands trying to be relevant with the youth. It reminds me of that time someone used drones on the runway, the silliest and most forced collection ever.

I would like to point out that I don't like constant hate, negativity or the mob mentality that has rallied up against Hedi (and his team) for this collection. The constant hate and "memes" in the community is tiring and stale. :(
@space_opera
@space_opera 4 жыл бұрын
Just got to the ending where you compared Raf and Hedi, I think it's a fair point, but to me the difference between them using the youth as inspiration for their collections is that Raf was actually saying something interesting and of value: these are the teens of today and they are frustrated with society, meanwhile Hedis collection isn't saying anything, probably because tik tok doesn't say anything meaningful either.
@BraveNewWear
@BraveNewWear 4 жыл бұрын
I get where you're coming from - and I typically don't like being overly negative and my genuine feeling is that...while im not here to defend tiktok or e-boys, I think its so easy and common for people to immediately dislike something before it's fleshed out and developed. Despite anyone's very reasonable arguments about how e-boys are taking x and y and punk or whoever was actually more important, historically speaking these same criticisms were laid at the feet of the movements we now cherish and value. For that reason i try to keep an open mind. In terms of the clothes looking cheap...i mean, they kind of do right?? I guess my only hope is that Hedi is actually maintaining his standard of quality and even if HM can make a cheap copy of these looks the actual Celine pieces will be made well.

Luxury and fashion caters to the youth, the youth and the people pushing barriers within the youth are on Tik Tok mostly, the ones dressing the least like everyone live there. The only way to truly push through the aging fashion machine is... to just go where people are going and taking notes, instead of trying to push recycled ideas. Hedi is probably the only designer that chased youth this season, trying to understand them (not completely obviously) and well, sell to them what they would like to wear.
@BraveNewWear
@BraveNewWear 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that its critical to look for authentic inspiration and I've always thought that the youth is typically a wellspring of new fashion ideas. I cant say for certain if this hits the mark but I think Hedi was trying

I feel as if it was really degrading towards Hedi and that it was somewhat a cash grab. Yes hippies and punks had their political reasons but I feel as if TikTok people solely dress the way they do to impress others. It’s nothing original. Great video by the way! Haha I really wanted that satisfaction where you bashed the collection. I almost forgot to mention that it feels a lot like an H&M look book.
@BraveNewWear

lol sorry I wasn't able to completely destroy the collection. I have to give him some credit for making a collection that isn't just more black color pallets with skinny black jeans. This is something a little bolder, even if the subject matter is something we can't really compare to the various other subcultures (hippies onward) that have brought with them cultural change.

but at the same time not really, tik tok kids have a strong culture of only thrifting or buying things on Depop, and the "eboy aesthetic" is based more around simplicity than high end fashion. Unless the style resonates with a slightly older demographic, the collection wont thrive, but will do fine because its an established brand
@BraveNewWear
@BraveNewWear 4 жыл бұрын
well I think that Slimane has shown his ability to move products when he's behind a fashion house. Certainly older consumers are still the 1s who have the most buying power, but I cant help but feel that they were considering all the zoomers who they expect will be the next big luxury consumer base and they want to start to draw their attention

I liked some of the jackets (the Hedi like ones we are used to) but I overall disliked everything, most of the stuff just looked like it was made to appeal to the tik tok youth (now that tik tok is possibly getting banned in the usa that could be a really big problem for them lmao) and I feel like that was a decision that was solely based on money. It is interesting though because although the e boy movement is very inspired in the past, it is what most teens and kids are wearing nowadays and I think its nice to have designers looking at the present and to the future with their new collections, the thing with Hedi is that his style is very 70s to 90s and we are used to that. I don’t mind Hedi evolving a bit but I think he sacrificed what he was known for too much for this collection and the execution was overall not good, I absolutely hate the fit of the suits and I agree with you that the windbreakers look awfully cheap. But hell, maybe we will be looking back at this collection as a good one....... doubt it lol
@BraveNewWear

Honestly i think that's fair it does feel like a divergent collection from what Hedi usually does and this collection has to be in part a move to attract more / new customers. Only time will tell how this one holds up.

Okay I start by saying I disagree this was not genius. Yeah you mention hippies, grunge, etc but those fashion movements were well developed before designers started to give a new take on it. I think if you were going to develop a collection based on e boys either give your whole new take or collectivize the movement when it’s actually developed. Tik tok and eboys have really only gotten popular in the last 9 months so at this point it just seems like a cash grab similarly to when fashion tried to cash on in hypebeast culture making collection feel like merch
@BraveNewWear
@BraveNewWear 4 жыл бұрын
hey thats fair! Marc Jacob's grunge collection for perry ellis was 1992 and even tho thats when a lot of people started to notice grunge, the sound and culture was already well in motion. I do agree that what I wish Hedi did different was provide some kind of new message or "point" about e-boys or zoomers in general and i at least didn't pick up on that. So maybe it does need more time to mature in order to say something meaningful

Hmmm. Lock necklaces? Punk. Black suits? New wave. Clashing prints? Grunge. Two tone hair? More punk. Ripped denim? More grunge. It’s eclectic sure but it’s all trickled down stuff we’ve seen before and lacks innovation. Where is the design? These looks will easily be copied by fast fashion companies which will only add to the problematic sustainability issues our planet is facing. Yes sure the looks can also be found at thrift stores but overall the narrative just pushed and supported this idea of not the youth not caring. That’s played out. If Gen Z even wants to have a future then it would be best to start critiquing the entire system and creating something truly new.

I can agree with that, Most of thee aesthetic ideas do have roots in punk or even grunge - and I wouldn't go as far as saying this is the only visible subculture from zoomers but it is clearly an aesthetic thats being adopted by a lot of boys on tiktok and if nothing else I think it's interesting that Hedi is choosing to find inspiration here. Whether it's superficial or not and what it means about the future of this generation i dont really know, but I do think it's a reflection of something that's happening right now online
