This is my favorite comic of all time. This is also what I consider as the origin of the Justice League. This comes off as the opposite of Watchmen. Where Watchmen is pessimistic the New Frontier is optimistic.

Consider that it was the mid-1980s when Watchmen came out. As a Cold War kid who grew up in that decade, the subliminal message I got was "Enjoy while it lasts. The nukes are coming regardless and no one is going to stop them." That apocalyptic undertone informs that whole book.

This is my favourite story out of all of the stories. It doesn't apologise for what it is. I think the more grim and gritty stories can be rooted in being ashamed of these properties. The New Frontier embraces some of the goofier and funner elements of the DCU and it holds it all in such great reverence. I was really devastated when Darwyn Cooke passed away. He was truly iconic. Nobody had a style like him or a creative eye.

The best version of Barry Allen ever. My favourite Flash. I love the fact that he's not just a depressed "boohoo mom die" character. He has real thoughts and feelings and his concerns, worries and fears are all warranted. But in true Flash fashion, he pushes through and saves the world. Loved him and of course, his relationship with Iris. Crazy that Darwyn Cooke did with him in a miniseries shared with DC's entire early Silver Age, that so many writers have failed to on his main series with multiple arcs and issues, and have inadvertently caused another great character in Wally West to be sidelined. Best Western comic ever, in my personal opinion.
@alexandrefrauches132
@alexandrefrauches132 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Wally West is my favorite Flash but Barry Allen is also really cool. I don't hate his drama with his mother but I do believe it's overdone storyline and Barry has many other aspect that can provide great stories like his relationship with Iris and Wally or the fact he is a nerdy scientist who constantly deals with this wacky sci-fy concepts like talking gorillas or villains from the future .

Three points: 1) To me, this was always more of a Hal Jordan story than a Green Lantern story. You forgot to mention young Jordan's encounter with Chuck Yeager, one of many historical cameos. 2) Cooke is the ONLY writer who ever perfectly balanced the warrior ethos and compassionate outlook of Wonder Woman in my view. And he made her taller than Supes too! This gets a hell of a spotlight in the New Frontier epilogue "The Greater Good". 3) One other body of Cooke's work that doesn't get enough love, his adaptations of Donald Westlake's Parker novels. He was working on at least one more of those when he died.

Some readers tend to think that complex/detailed stories like Watchmen are the best, given that degree of complexity and its respective coherence, their approach to certain circumstances and the way they stick to or resemble reality, and is ok. On the other hand, some readers admire also the talent of writers that are capable to deliver great content with less pages (simple stories), yet remarkable as those other well known (rewarded) nowadays, insightful as a love letter that you crave to hold and to read over and over again. Such is the case of The New Frontier. Speaking about the animated movie, from the (current) 49 movies that started with Superman Doomsday, The New Frontier still remains as my very favorite, I simply enjoy every minute.

Great review Owen. I'm really sick of every hero being conflicted and morally Gray. I'd like my heroes to be like this 1. Have morals stick with your morals no matter what. 2. Have powers use powers for good. love being a hero. have tons of action doesn't have to be brutal. 3 be a good guy who is also a good person. Basically Captain America and Spiderman. Superhero story without having dower "mentally broken" hero who acts purely out of fear, anger, Vengeance, or out of necessity only when the harm of crime directly affects said hero or their way of life. What happened to the classic optimistic altruistic hero or heroine who acted out not purely out of a sense of Vengeance or self-preservation but Heroes who do good acts simply because it's the right thing to do? A hero whose ideals according to seemingly a good number of audience members in the general population would have us all believe are redundant and silly. Someone who takes action for the betterment of society as a whole. Someone who's seen their personal commitment to the safety and protection of others as their moral obligation to do so. People who fight for upholding a higher moral standard than what Society accepts not to uphold the idea of what's "realistic" and manageable but to uphold the principle that we can be better than we think we are. To be better in spite of the world telling us "we aren't capable of being better". And that is the main problem I see with more and more superhero films nowadays is the intentional blurring of the moral lines between Good and Evil. Like we need to be reminded of the corruption in horror going on in real life? People have seen and heard plenty of the bad let them talk about the non-cynical Earnest good and sincere Heroes. I don't mind Marvel benefiting greatly from telling more emotionally mature an in-depth character based stories. I don't believe that going in and explicitly darker route where the stories focus on darker grittier route where ONLY the darker grittier elements is the way to go. If anything we need a mix of those elements and tones carried across all of future films (in separate films or even having films that evenly blend said elements)

Same with Batman...the first version of Batman you see is not supposed to be Bruce Wayne from The Dark Knight Returns. You haven't even seen what led him up to be that way. A nice companion piece to THE NEW FRONTIER is James Robinson's and Paul Smith's THE GOLDEN AGE. Can't recommend it enough! Even though it was an Elseworlds book, bits of it found their way into Robinson's STARMAN (most importantly, Ted Knight's nervous breakdown and the cosmic staff). ALSO I have to recommend to anyone who digs Cooke's work that they seek out and try his graphic novel adaptations of Donald Westlake;s hardboiled PARKER books. Absolutely beautiful stuff! Great job on the video, btw!

Another great video as always, I like when you cover books you seem to genuinely love. They have a much different feel than your videos where you talk about something like Ultimatum. I really love the New Frontier, it’s one of those books that I read as a kid and thought was just fine, but now I consider it one of the best series DC ever put out. Can’t wait to see what you end up covering next.

Boy, imagine a comic that actually presents the characters as heroic, inspiring and hopeful, vs a “real” take on super heroes. It’s so sad that people think things need to be gritty or real for these characters to be interesting, cause if you really think that than you really don’t understand the point of these characters.

I thought it owed a small debt to The Golden Age by James Robinson & Paul Smith. There had been plans for a Silver Age sequel by Robinson & Howard Chaykin, and I don’t think we’ll see that now. The New Frontier ticks all the same boxes that story would have to. New Frontier also reminded me of Steve Englehart’s reworking of the JLA origin during his run on the Justice League in the ‘70s. All that said, Cooke’s reimagining of the era was brilliant. I’d never been a fan of the Challengers of the Unknown, but when this came out, DC was suffering in the fallout of the George Clooney “Batman & Robin” movie, and I thought Warner execs should take a break from Superman & Batman projects & give us a solid Challengers flick.
