For university work that you only need to download Word documents and PDF files. 256GB is more then enough. However, if you are doing digital media design and other architecture or other course requiring heavy files. Then, definitely consider the bigger storage. Don't upgrade storage until you've upgraded RAM. Especially for M1 Macs. 16GB of RAM improves on your machine more than more SSD storage. External SSD is the way to go. You can get a 1TB SSD for about $130, and you can put money towards RAM instead.

Thanks for this. Just went with a 512-GB model... It's 2021 and these M1 machines are great at video and audio editing, there's at most a $25 wholesale price difference between a 512-GB and 1-TB SSD m.1 drive, the only logical reason Apple puts such crap storage on their Mac Books is to drive users to pay for an iCloud plan.
@JohnJones-lb6xo2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Although you can buy an external HD to backup all of your photos and what not
@Capricorn_IV2 жыл бұрын
I personally think you should go for upgrading memory before storage. You can always back up your data through external or cloud storage. Future programs might require more memory to run correctly so if you are only upgrading one it should always be memory. Think you have made a mistake dude
@rmzzz762 жыл бұрын
@@Capricorn_IV That depends on use case. About year into owning my M1 Mac Book Air and I can report zero regrets on the decision to upgrade storage capacity over system RAM. The Mac apps seem to be a lot more memory efficient in general that what I encountered on Windows, but the M1 also seems to be optimized (see KZbin videos of dozens of tracks being open in Logic Pro on an M1 mac with only 8-GB of RAM). I think if you're looking to do creative intense projects and live in Photoshop, Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro, you will want 16-GB of RAM and 512-GB of storage for you large projects. But then you might as well buy a Mac Book Pro. On 8-GB I'm having no issue with creative programs like Unity3D, Logic Pro, iMovie, etc.. So I disagree with you. For most users 8-GB of RAM will be fine... Exception might be if you are in these creative tools 8+ hours a day needing working as a pro. You'll probably need the headroom. 256-GB standard disc space would not cut it for me, you can use external storage and wait on cloud storage to sync, but that's a lot of time awaiting.. and time is too valuable to me. I know I've had to live that life on another system I did make the mistake of going too low. So for me the 512-GB storage upgrade was the way to go.
@snowwalker99993 жыл бұрын

My recommendation for most users is to at the very least get 512gb and if you can afford it get 1tb. Apple knows they can charge a pretty premium for storage because there storage is so fast with the newer M1 MacBooks running over 6GB/sec -- so yeah, they can justify a somewhat higher price but Apple being Apple they take that liberty to the extreme. The RAM problem also introduces a storage problem by swapping so having additional storage is preferred to account for the greater tendency to move data from RAM to storage in swap. If you are cramped for SSD storage the OS will reuse the same areas more often reducing the lifespan so having more storage reduces the reuse problem. For the MacBook I'm looking to get, the M1 Max 16 inch with 64GB RAM and 2TB storage the greater amount of RAM should reduce the swap issue and having 2TB of storage should permit the swap area to move around so one area isn't over used. Of course, with 2TB there's no way I can keep all my file on it so I have externals and redundant ones.

i spent ages finding an ipad with 256gb for a decent price. it was refurbished and in "fair" condition according to the site. bought it, was doing a bit more searching after purchasing and found this site i had never seen before, and there was this exact same ipad model. it was £7 more, but for 512gb and in "very good" condition. i was so annoyed, i cancelled the other order and bought the 512 gig one instead. so happy I've got it. it arrived in 2 days, was completely legitimate looks great

I’ve had my base MacBook Air m1 for a year now and still have 130gb available. I only have GarageBand loaded and about 6-8 blue Ray movies downloaded on Apple TV. I figured for $200 for double the storage.. I’d just buy a nice external ssd down the line if I needed it as I never use the second thunderbolt port anyways.

RAM IS MEMORY! If you meant storage rather than memory, well it really depends. If you don't need much performance or that much storage, stick with stock options. For more performance, get more ram. For more long term storage, get more storage. If you want high performance and high amount of storage age, save up for both. If you have more questions feel free to ask!

Thank you for this video, liked and subscribed! I do have one question. I will be using the macbook pro m1 for mainly website building and photo editing, but in the near future might also be doing lots of editing of 4k video footage. I have external drives and creative cloud storage, so will put most of my photos/videos on there, unless I will be using them to edit. In this case, do you think 256GB is enough, or would you still recommend the 512 gb? I am also in doubt between the 8GB ram or the 16GB, but am leaning towards the latter. If you have the time to give me some advice, that would be much appreciated. Either way, thank you for taking this informative video!
@karthiknandula3 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend going for the 16GB without a doubt. Definitely a better option for you and you won't regret it. But if you go for 8GB, sooner or later, you'll start regreting. Also, for storage, I'd say go for the 512GB, I know it may not necessarily be used all the time but it will be handy. Like the guy in the top comment said, "go nice, or pay twice"

@thrillereighties82412 жыл бұрын
@@sbaby1991 If you plan to run spreadsheets then yes. If you want to install dual boot systems or plan to install resource-hungry software like games then no. Let's say you are a gamer. You installed World of Warcraft. 100GB gone. If you want to play Ghost Breakpoint then almost 50 GB is gone. The point is that if it is for personal use, you eventually find more things you want to install. If it is just for work, then you will be fine. I am a programmer and just my Visual Studio with SQL and all the .NET goodies then you will find you need anything between 20GB and 130GB of hard drive space.
