I hope this discussion of storage space for the M1 MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air was helpful. Did I cover what you wanted to know? What else did you want to see or learn about. Would love to know what you think. How much storage do you think you need and which laptop would you go with? 🙏

You shouldn’t always get the top end model. Spending a good amount of money on a laptop that will last you years is good, but you shouldn’t be wasting your money either. You’re paying ridiculous storage prices on these macbooks, you could almost buy an entire other macbook with the prices of 2TB storage.

For university work that you only need to download Word documents and PDF files. 256GB is more then enough. However, if you are doing digital media design and other architecture or other course requiring heavy files. Then, definitely consider the bigger storage. I had 128GB before doing nursing degree and only hardly used 25GB. Most of my files were stored on Google drive and Microsoft One drive.

Don't upgrade storage until you've upgraded RAM. Especially for M1 Macs. 16GB of RAM improves on your machine more than more SSD storage. External SSD is the way to go. You can get a 1TB SSD for about $130, and you can put money towards RAM instead.

There are so many types of use between "just browsing the internet" and "hardcore image editing that will burn your eyes out". I find it really unhelpful when these are the only types of computer usage mentioned in these type of videos. Of course the base model will fit a person who barely uses their notebook.That is obvious, unhelpful and yet repeated on almost every single video while other types of usage don't even get mentioned. Thanks for presenting more possibilities!

Another point to consider: If you are using multiple heavy apps at the same time (ex photoshop and final cut) you should consider getting a bigger disk and probably 16GB RAM. M1 use a lot of swap memory into the disk. The bigger the disk more time it will last.

these days on the average, storage costs 10 cents per GB of internal SSD storage. so for 1TB costs $100 which is a reasonable norm. but apple solders all the ram and hard drive which prevents consumers from upgrading their own memory and hard drive, so they can charge consumers 4 times as much. what a blatant rip off.

I personally think you should go for upgrading memory before storage. You can always back up your data through external or cloud storage. Future programs might require more memory to run correctly so if you are only upgrading one it should always be memory. Think you have made a mistake dude
@rmzzz76
@rmzzz76 2 жыл бұрын
@@Capricorn_IV That depends on use case. About year into owning my M1 Mac Book Air and I can report zero regrets on the decision to upgrade storage capacity over system RAM. The Mac apps seem to be a lot more memory efficient in general that what I encountered on Windows, but the M1 also seems to be optimized (see KZbin videos of dozens of tracks being open in Logic Pro on an M1 mac with only 8-GB of RAM). I think if you're looking to do creative intense projects and live in Photoshop, Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro, you will want 16-GB of RAM and 512-GB of storage for you large projects. But then you might as well buy a Mac Book Pro. On 8-GB I'm having no issue with creative programs like Unity3D, Logic Pro, iMovie, etc.. So I disagree with you. For most users 8-GB of RAM will be fine... Exception might be if you are in these creative tools 8+ hours a day needing working as a pro. You'll probably need the headroom. 256-GB standard disc space would not cut it for me, you can use external storage and wait on cloud storage to sync, but that's a lot of time awaiting.. and time is too valuable to me. I know I've had to live that life on another system I did make the mistake of going too low. So for me the 512-GB storage upgrade was the way to go.

~256gb is sufficient for very light users: Think word docs, pdf docs, excel docs, a small music library, and a few hundred photos. ~512gb is sufficient for your standard user: Think some movies, a few thousand photos, a larger music library, some projects files and enough room for larger applications. ~1tb is sufficient for your pro user: Think working on larger professional projects with the ability to store some of their files ~~With the storage capability for windows bootcamp. ~2tb + is sufficient for high end / specialist users: Think having to store 4tb of raw video files shot on a 2 day commercial. My recommendation for most users is to at the very least get 512gb and if you can afford it get 1tb. It's always better to future proof your computer with a little bit more storage even if you don't think you need it now.

Apple knows they can charge a pretty premium for storage because there storage is so fast with the newer M1 MacBooks running over 6GB/sec -- so yeah, they can justify a somewhat higher price but Apple being Apple they take that liberty to the extreme. The RAM problem also introduces a storage problem by swapping so having additional storage is preferred to account for the greater tendency to move data from RAM to storage in swap. If you are cramped for SSD storage the OS will reuse the same areas more often reducing the lifespan so having more storage reduces the reuse problem. For the MacBook I'm looking to get, the M1 Max 16 inch with 64GB RAM and 2TB storage the greater amount of RAM should reduce the swap issue and having 2TB of storage should permit the swap area to move around so one area isn't over used. Of course, with 2TB there's no way I can keep all my file on it so I have externals and redundant ones.

No doing any video work and I use iCloud for photos as well as DropBox and MS cloud for documents. I never download movies, as for games I’m going to be using my AppleTV 4K 3rd Generation with 128GB (once I get that) for Apple Arcade.

Depends what you are using it for. I'm on a biological sciences program and its more than enough for me. I'm not sure what it's like in other parts of the world but in the UK we also get free microsoft 365 subscription so most of my documents and powerpoints are on OneDrive - its mainly the sims that takes up most of my storage, my uni work hardly leaves a dent. If you need it for anything more than word processing then yeah you might need more storage but like they suggest you could get some external SSD.

RAM IS MEMORY! If you meant storage rather than memory, well it really depends. If you don't need much performance or that much storage, stick with stock options. For more performance, get more ram. For more long term storage, get more storage. If you want high performance and high amount of storage age, save up for both. If you have more questions feel free to ask!

Thank you for this video, liked and subscribed! I do have one question. I will be using the macbook pro m1 for mainly website building and photo editing, but in the near future might also be doing lots of editing of 4k video footage. I have external drives and creative cloud storage, so will put most of my photos/videos on there, unless I will be using them to edit. In this case, do you think 256GB is enough, or would you still recommend the 512 gb? I am also in doubt between the 8GB ram or the 16GB, but am leaning towards the latter. If you have the time to give me some advice, that would be much appreciated. Either way, thank you for taking this informative video!

I'd recommend going for the 16GB without a doubt. Definitely a better option for you and you won't regret it. But if you go for 8GB, sooner or later, you'll start regreting. Also, for storage, I'd say go for the 512GB, I know it may not necessarily be used all the time but it will be handy. Like the guy in the top comment said, "go nice, or pay twice"

@@sbaby1991 If you plan to run spreadsheets then yes. If you want to install dual boot systems or plan to install resource-hungry software like games then no. Let's say you are a gamer. You installed World of Warcraft. 100GB gone. If you want to play Ghost Breakpoint then almost 50 GB is gone. The point is that if it is for personal use, you eventually find more things you want to install. If it is just for work, then you will be fine.
