Thank you for the positive feedback! It breaks my heart to read some of the comments. John put the band back together to bring life to the music and to find a new connection that he once found when the original band was together. People wanted this! People flocked to the shows!They had sold out shows! They traveled the world! The reformation was a huge hit…not some has-been trying to make it. They are and always will be iconic! I’m BLESSED that I was chosen to fill in for Mackenzie Phillips and also totally replace her from January of 1991 through April 1993 when I left. So in all 1986-1993 I was there making history with this amazing group of singers and musicians that toured with us! Johnny Kito was our music director…absolutely gifted man! There will be haters but all I can say is that THIS was the real deal.

Thank you for posting this, Laurie Beebe Lewis. You were so gracious to answer so many of the comments. I have been a fan of both The Mamas and the Papas and Spanky & Our Gang since I was a small child in the 60s. Cass Elliot and Elaine McFarlane are two of my all time favorite vocalists. I heard some of the later Mamas & Papas lineups, but this one is really special. I know it is a prerecorded track, but I have to say that you blend so beautifully with Elaine, and I just adore Denny. It's nice to see Scott here too. I know Dick Weissman, who was in the Journeymen with Scott and John. Dick is an amazing and brilliant human being, by the way. If you have never met him, I hope you get the chance some day. He is still playing banjo, making recordings, and writing books.

Raymond Gill Thank you Raymond! I was in The Buckinghams before I was asked (By John Phillips with a recommendation from Spanky McFarlane) to join the group. Being in the presence of these major league well known artists was very daunting and intimidating at first. But as time went on the I was considered a “principal” by John and Denny and I was paid the same as the other principal singers (not side-man pay) There were challenges at times and my greater strength is a power vocalist so I had to tone down my singing style to blend with the others but working with them was absolutely awesome and fulfilling!

Laurie Beebe Lewis. thanks again for your answer. it was a bit amazing that Spanky was a very good substitute for Mama Cass, I saw Spanky and our gang at the Sullivan show back in 1967 and I was 8 years old and Spanky looked so differently, a very beautiful girl and she was the lead singer. I just did a little research and John Sitter(the drummer) and Spanky are the only ones alive from that gang group. Spanky was just a choir voice at the M's & P's after she was a lead singer. that was a big difference. well anyways both groups were my favorites when I was in elementary's 3rd grade level.

I was scheduled to do a radio interview with John Phillips sometime in the 90s, when John's daughter McKenzie Phillips was doing the Michelle persona and parts, Denny was still there, Scott McKenzie was doing John's parts, and a wonderful Broadway singer was doing the Cass role. John was kind of just being the Papa, but was in the background leading the group, but no longer appearing on stage. It would be over the phone, some days before a performance at the Ohio State Fair. I come out of the commercial break, and say "Welcome John Phillips!" A male voice responds: "Um, this is Scott McKenzie. John just handed me the phone and ran out of the room." Scott of course was a long-time friend, and had the hit single "If You're Going to San Francisco," written by John. We had an incredible, lengthy conversation about the Mamas and the Papas, all the characters mentioned in Creeque Alley, and Scott's own career. A wonderful highlight, Scott was delightful, but a kind of a "miss" at the same time, as I wouldn't get to meet Papa John Phillips on that much awaited day.

@lauriebeebelewis
@lauriebeebelewis 5 жыл бұрын
Helene D In 1974, Cass was in London where she was performing at the London Palladium to sold-out crowds. On the evening of July 29, 1974, after giving a spectacular performance, Cass tragically was the victim of a heart attack, which ended her life at the young age of 32. Many rumors circulated regarding her untimely death. These included a drug overdose, an FBI assassination plot, that she was pregnant with John Lennon’s child, and suicide. The most popular and resilient of these rumors was that she had choked to death while eating a ham sandwich. The ham sandwich myth was fueled by the report of Dr. Anthony Greenburgh, the physician who first examined Cass after her death. Greenburgh reportedly told the Daily Express that “she appeared to have been eating a ham sandwich and drinking Coca-Cola while lying down-a very dangerous thing to do,” and continued, “she seemed to have choked on a ham sandwich.” He came to these conclusions from his first impression upon entering the scene, and he believed she died of asphyxia. Dr. Greenburgh completely overlooked the fact that the ham sandwich sitting on the table had not been touched.

Why is the line changed from "began to pray" to "pretend to pray"? Weird.
@lauriebeebelewis
@lauriebeebelewis 7 жыл бұрын
vatonorteno That is an excellent question! The words are "pretended" and not "began"....and always were.....When I first joined the group in 1986, I too was caught off guard when Denny first sang "pretended to pray" because I always thought it was "and I began to pray" and learned it that way while wood-shedding all the vocals before my first rehearsals with The Mamas & the Papas! I asked John Phillips about the line and to clarify if it was "began" or "pretend" and he told me "the person stops into a church [to get warm because it's cold outside] and feels the need to do something in order to be in a church in the first place so he pretends to pray as the "excuse" to stay there to get warm." He obviously talks to the preacher there because the preacher tells him "he likes the cold and knows he's gonna stay". The verse before that ends with "California dreamin' on such a winters day" so we know it's winter and it's cold! I don't think the writer of the song was a religious man. Denny was always asked this question so he started singing "pretended" instead of "pretend" to vocally clarify that the word was NOT began. If you listen closely on the original recordings Denny sings "pretend". xox Laurie

When John put the group back together in 1980 only the two guys remained. He called his daughter Mackenzie and Spanky McFarlane. He never called it “the new mamas & mamas”, he just carried on with what he could. The above configuration was Scott McKenzie, Original member Denny Doherty …. John was in the hospital getting a new liver. Say what you will but this is the mamas & papas too… members come and go

Profesjonalny Ekspert John was having a liver transplant so Scott McKenzie filled in for him. Mackenzie took Michelle’s spot (Michelle did not want to come back to the M’s & P’s) when John put the band back together but she was in rehab so I took McKenzies spot.

Spanky and Our Gang was sort of a poor man's Mamas and the Papas (and I liked them). So it was apt that they would sort of combine for this weird thing.

I like Spanky and Our Gang, and they could even play their instruments live while harmonizing. Malcolm Hale was as good an arranger of vocals.

It's such good songs/sound I miss seeing/hearing Michelle tho', I guess after all, that isn't possible? This still sounds really nice regardless. Good luck to all. I didn't know M&TP had reformed but I see that L. B Lewis is no longer with them, I know I'm 5yrs late but what happened? and are the M&TP still going? I simply have not heard anything. Oh ! but WHY OH WHY was no-one doing Cass's shuffle?

Cass, John and Denny and gone, Scott, too. There is no one to carry on the legacy. I’m in a band called “The Original Starfires” and we do a few M’s & P’s songs as a part of our show!

@@lauriebeebelewis Actually Michele is still alive and I think she sometimes does a cameo with one or two of her daughters who do go through the M&P's playlist, at least I saw a video of it but I don't know if the daughters show is a regular thing or just a 1 off. Glad you do some of their songs because many are classics, and I think you would benefit from that.

I wished I could have met them all and was on that trip to the Virgin Islands and off course duffys, the story about them and the trip to the casino changed my life, my dear mum loved Denny he was so handsome she would say, lol my dad used to not like him saying he was a hippie, so I became a hippy lol, loved Judith Durham from the seekers all my life searching for her but ended up with some of the worst women imaginable,lol buy hey I knew Denny, good bless them all, cass and john

As a fledgling musician in the 60's my sister and I used to sing California Dreamin' while doing the dishes. We'd fight over who would sing the guy part and the girl part! Lol! Who da thought that 20 years later I would be a "Mama" in The Mamas and the Papas! Or that a website like KZbin would exist! My aspirations were Rock, or pop. This was a vocally challenging life changing experience 🎶

john appleby Yes, so true. But like all the groups from that era, many realized there was money to be made and a high demand from their fans to revisit the memories so key members put a band back together and went on to make more albums and tour. xo

MsKerryanne FYI, We were never called "The New Mamas and Papas" when we were together.....we never promoted that way and John considered us "The Mamas and the Papas"...just like the Beach Boys were never called "The New Beach Boys" even tho some of the guys were replaced with new guys. :-) xo Laurie
