Deciding between this and the Sherpa. Want to carry snowboards/ skis in winter, as well as Rotopax when not carrying bikes... you mention plans to add sherpa panels in the negative space, so it sounds like this new design offers the most versatility for people who don't want to mount their bikes vertically. Do I have that right?
@victorm76914 жыл бұрын
Hi John- cool stuff. What system do you recommend if you wanted to carry 2 bikes, the cargo box, a shovel, and say some rotopax. Sherpa? B2?

Nice set up. Only issue I saw was the bike wheel overhanging by quite a bit the vehicle body and that is a set up for an accident when driving on a highway. Trucks and other vehicles could clip the wheel. Or catching tree branches on a track. Plus would having the wheel extend out from the body of the vehicle be legal. Possible not in Australia where I am from. The police crack down when tires are outside the vehicle body.

The back of the van tapers a lot compared to the front. From the back taillight you can stick out 18” before you start to get outside the side view mirror

Is there a “stop” to prevent the door fully opening & those racks punching through the windows?
@chrisschmiedeke4 жыл бұрын
I don’t see how it would stop before contacting the side of the van. Would have to have something on side of the van to bump against.

Looks like you can use that bike rack as a dip station for workouts. Also an idea is to have some kind of pull-up bar attached on that.
@owloffroad3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use it as a dip station. We do not currently have a pull up bar bur you could make something fairly easily.

Can the bike rack be centered better? Do you offer custom boxes for items such as a folding kayak?
@johnwillenborg4 жыл бұрын
Bikes don’t really need to be centered for anything other than aesthetics, but yes they can be moved more left. The more you keep them over the posts the more stable they are. They look like they stick out but they are inside of the side mirrors. We don’t do any custom boxes unfortunately.

Curious about theft prevention on those bolts.. seems like one Allen key could make a 10k mountain bike vanish in less than a minute.. any theft deterrent/vandal proof bolts that could make it more difficult to remove??
@InspiredByBrad3 жыл бұрын
Check out HexLox, anti-theft hex bolt locks that fit any hex key bolt. Designed for bikes, but a great idea for things like this. The nut on the rear could also be an anti-theft design as well, like a cone nut, etc. Some are listed on McMaster Carr
@BrandonBoo8 ай бұрын
may i ask how you can secure the bikes once on the rack from theft? It looks like the bike platforms are only held on the tubes by some screw able u ring and nuts. ANy way to lock that? two men could easily undo and slide off a bike of two...
@owloffroad8 ай бұрын
The bike trays use special bolts that require a tool that comes with the kit. It is similar to locking lug bolts. You can also purchase additional locks to secure the bikes. That said, anyone that brings tools to steal bikes is probably going to get what they want.

I 'd like to see a video how you mount an 80-lb e-bike up on the bike rack. Do you think a 75 year old, 5ft 7in, 145 lb guy can do this by himself? I love the set-up and I just wonder if me and my wife (75 year old, 4ft 11in, 125 lb) can do it.
@owloffroad4 жыл бұрын
E-bikes are harder because they are so heavy. My recommendation would be to mount the tubes low on the B2 so you don't have to pick the e-bike up very high
@stevecabacungan4 жыл бұрын
@@owloffroad I also want to install your ladder/tire carrier. Would there be enough clearance for one e-bike mounted to the outside of the bike rack? (That is, if I mount the tubes to the lowest position)
@owloffroad4 жыл бұрын
@@stevecabacungan You can mount a single bike on the B2 low, behind the tire. Two bikes and you would have to raise the posts if you have Ladder + Tire Carrier

@owloffroad4 жыл бұрын
The B2 is very versatile. We also have mini-sherpa plates coming out for the B2 that will allow people to attach items and not just a box. I can't say definitively about your specific gear but it is probably the best option of anything on the market

@johnwillenborg4 жыл бұрын
Box is about 16” plus 3-4” for the carrier. So ballpark 20” off the back. Many folks just use a hitch extender

Transit Version? There are WAY more transits on the road than Sprinters, even though Sprinter got an early lead in the camper/off-road market with factory AWD and such. I'd be surprised if campervan Transits don't outnumber campervan Sprinters in the next several years. Transit now has the factory AWD as well as the aftermarket Quigley 4WD option--which is now order-able directly from Sportsmobile. And, you don't have to fuss with Diesel in a Transit, which makes Baja trips feasible!
