What the new pope sought to achieve is what he considered to be "essential": to bridge the enormous gap between the sinful and the sacred. This was actually accomplished after his return for the self imposed exile. His own personna, his youthful rebeliousness, his wretched punk past was actually what bridged the gap. When all those fragile, outcasts, the neglected and forgotten "sinners" saw pictures of a young Brannox, displaying all the essential elements of a true sinner, they finally felt accepted. A being with a past simmilar to their present would be capable of finally understanding their hardships. Not only understanding them, but also accepting them in a place of forgiveness, a place which offers a sense of belonging. The Church. His own personna and actions actually bridged the gap which he describes here, which was essential in order to "upgrade" the bible. Beautiful, poetic and appreciated.
