Producer/engineer here with over 21 years of experience and worked for some amazing artists. Leaving this comment for everyone who makes music and is early in their career. You don't need the latest plugin. A plugin won't "magically" make everything better. It's you who will make everything better. I can guarantee you that a great engineer with stock plugins only can make it sound better than you with all the plugins in the world, if you don't really know what you are doing. Truth is, most plugins are snake oil or do very similar things. I myself love using a certain eq because i feel like it sounds better than another even though I know I can achieve that same effect with any other eq. But since it makes me feel good, it's great, cause it inspires you to work better, even if the plugin is not necessarily better. This plugin won't make you sound like Serban. Because Serban used this when it was a hardware unit. And he's mixing exclusively in the box for many many years now. This plugin just came out. Are Serban's mixes without this plugin, from the past 10 years worse? I'd say they're as good as they ever were. It's not the plugin, it's you!!! Keep working, keep grinding and stop thinking a tool will make you better. You control the tool! Not the other way around!

@madsonit : We totally agree with the basic sentiment you are espousing (even though we made the plugin). Your ears, and what is happening in between them is the most important part. That being said, Serban *has* been using the the device continuously through out his career (confirmed by him to us, and by John publicly) because it does something pretty unique, that he values. And he *has* recently replaced the device with the plugin, because it does the same unique thing and more. So the point about this specific plugin is that Serban feels that this allows him to work with the process within the daw rather than having to go out to the device (which is confirmed by his endorsement, and by the follow up comments that John Hanes has made). At the end of the day it is definitely you (the engineer) that makes the mix, and there are no short-cuts. But sometimes having a great tool makes it easier, or allows you to accomplish something that you wouldn't be able to otherwise. And if you appreciate and respect Serban's work, then perhaps his opinion about certain tools is worth considering. The best thing to do, for anyone who's interest has been piqued, is to grab the demo and try it for yourself. The demo is free, and it it is fully functional for 30 days - so you have time to see if it really continues to work for you after the initial bloom is off the rose. See if it is a useful tool for your work and your work flow. If it is, great - it is affordable, supported on all platforms and it will continue to be supported for many years to come (just like all the tools we make). If not, cool - then its not something you need to spend money on. Either way - you win!

I have songs that I produced that Serban mixed, so yes, I do love his work and sound. :) As for this plugin, I already bought it a few days ago... 30 seconds after testing the demo. Easiest purchase ever. You guys did an amazing job. And I have a feeling it will be all over my mixes, like ChannelStrip - I still like the design of V3 better, I hope you bring the possibility of using that legacy skin in a future update. But back to my earlier point... realistically speaking, for a beginner in mixing/engineering - it won't make a bad mix sound amazing... magically. And that's valid for any other plugin out there. There's so many people saying the plugin "x" makes you sound like the engineer "y". It's not like that... :) If it was that easy, everybody would mix music. You have to learn and become great at your craft to be able to use these kind of tools right. Especially this plugin, which in it's normal form is way more subtle than what you could do with an EQ, for example.

I'd love to see a whole mix with mixhead off/on and then tape sat from saturn and studer and some other plugins. I feel like the other plugs could do the same. MixHead can be definitely one of the lightest at least from my experience it's pretty light on the cpu.

It's light on CPU because the DSP of the era was nowhere close to capable of the nuances of today's tape machine model algos. It's a waveshaper with a little emphasis EQ (and no oversampling?), which is very easy processing by today's standards.

Well, this plug-in didn't exist until recently in whatever form (beta or not) and SG has been mixing in the box exclusively for years... or so that's the story. So he's been mixing hits for years without it just fine. Unless he has been running through the old hardware this is based on... but Hanes has said they are completely ITB and have been for quite a while. So which is it? That's not to say this isn't a cool plug-in... but it's also a brand new plug-in. You can't imply this is a Serban secret weapon and has been for years when it didn't exist even a a few months ago.

He has been mixing through the hardware version of this for many many years. He is now quoted as saying he loves the plug-in and can use it in many different situations instead of just one hardware piece. So we have now identified the Serban secret as he has used this hardware piece for years and he now loves and uses the plug-in. To me and many others this is valuable information. Hopefully it is for you as well.

This keeps getting deleted (probably cause of my connection rn) but from post #6497 in the John Hanes/serban thread on gear space This is what John said “It has been replacing the hardware unit more and more as we've gone through several generations of the plugin with MakeBelieve. Hardware has been on most all mixes done for 20+ years, with the exceptions of 96kHz mixes (some Taylor Swift and others), Atmos mixes (I worked up a substitute), and an occasional mix where it didn't do what was needed for the mix. We would also bypass it for bouncing offline stems. I'm comfortable using it now as a direct substitute on new or old mixes. I can also use it for Atmos mixes and offline bounces.”

Well, considering he's regarding his master chain to be a trade secret there might be a small chance that this is a red herring. (The producers of Cher's "Believe" claimed to be using a vocoder, when they in fact were using Autotune, so red herrings in sound mixing is not unheard of.) However Serban is endorsing it, and for good reasons, as it sounds fantastic!

I am not trying to sell something just giving away valuable information. Besides the level difference, the low end difference is quite exceptional. Funny you should bring up the level matching topic. I have always thought that that concept is ridiculous. It’s like saying I like ketchup on hotdogs and it makes hotdogs better and someone telling me well….you need to take the ketchup off the hotdog and see if you still like it. If ketchup makes it better keep the ketchup on it!! If a plugin makes something sound better and part of that is because it’s louder than I’m ALL IN! Sometimes the plugin makes it louder and louder is worse but when louder is better count your blessings!

@@BobbyHuff Level matching is crucial when comparing A/B as the ear gets drawn to louder volumes. It’s not a “ridiculous concept” - it’s a practice used by all pro mixers.
