I wonder if the platter are perfectly straight on this new series. The first GR model, I returned 2 decks because the platters were slightly undulating. For such a price, it was shameful. YES! As I said in my reply. What a pain it is with this wobble! I'd love a decent technics TT but I can't afford £4000 for the premium model. And testing, packing and returning a TT is time-consuming and annoying. I was even told by the dealer I visited that the wobble on the 1200 GR was 'within manufacturer parameters' or something like that.
@DIRECTSOUNDVINYL Жыл бұрын
@@hobhood7118 Yes, that’s completely scandalous. The oscillation is accepted as compliant. For objects at such prices, we have to stop taking people for idiots. IN fact, this is a turntable to buy in store, by testing the platter carefully. I kept the SL1500C because the platter was good but I have a friend who bought one and it still oscillates. We cannot sell premium with defects like that. Most KZbin channels advertise, they won't give a flaw. Namely, a second fault is the arm mechanism which for me is less solid and precise than the old MK2s. On my sl 1500C, I had to change it during the warranty because the arm lowered itself in the high position...

All the platters had wobble of a few millimetres. Bad luck? Three times over? From three separate dealers? I think Hanpin have some quality issues.
@paulboyce8537 Жыл бұрын
Just got the Hanpin turntable PLX1000 and that is pretty good. Lot better than this Technics. For wobble it is very small. If you concentrate you can just make it out but it is maybe under 0.1mm that on £650 turntable with 14.6 kg weight, less than 0.01 % wow, more than 4.5 kg /cm torque, better insulation than Technics, tonearm better insulated, better sound qualities than Technics ... is almost non excistent but the little dots go a bit up and down not in perfect line. This I have seen on almost all the turntables that the cast is never perfect. But £650 you can't complain about such a small trivial thing. Reloop almost as good as the Pioneer. In every aspect is better compared to Technics. Don't be fooled it might look the same but it is nothing like the Technics inside. I was also looking for some time and comparing. Came to the conclusion that Technics is nothing more than name hugely overpriced.

Also there are lot of placebo effect going on with the Technics. But that said maybe there was something at early release but mostly good reviews on sold items. You have to take the reviews with grain of salt when today most have no idea. Transit can loosen the bearing for example and I grew up with vinyl. It is 1 minute job to adjust. There's a lot of terms being thrown around to make it seem like they've done something crazy, but power supply noise hasn't really been an issue and you can get a power supply upgrade kit for SL1200 turntables for around €80~€90. The delta sigma drive just sounds fancy, but they don't really explain what it does. Coreless motors have been a thing since the 70s and JVC had budget turntables which had these. My L-F71 has a measured W&F of around 0.02%RMS. When making statements that go like: "the benefits are enormous, I can't tell you how huge the difference it makes, it's insane!" it should be backed up with data, especially if the difference is as huge as you make it out to be.
@kevinwalker8639 Жыл бұрын
It’s great that you appreciate the value of the power supply upgrade being nearly half of the increase in price that plus the metal finish on the controls. The new Delta Sigma drive smooths out micro vibrations caused by the motor drive circuit (I am not saying that the GR had significant vibrations in fact they are that minute they don’t show on wow and flutter ratios) these two things together do make a significant sonic improvement so absolutely value for money for the end user.

Using something like a Denon 103 can be a struggle to get enough head shell mass (or effective tonearm mass I guess) for proper control of the low compliance cartridge. In my experience, I added head shell weight and the supplied extra counter weight to balance or the sound suffered. I bought the DL-103 not realizing how low compliance it is and it sounded awful (noticeably worse than a N97xE or a AT-VM95ML) until I educated myself and applied the tuning above (yes, with appropriate MC Pre). Thought it was the stylus differences but no, for me it was setup. Also, it's worth mentioning something most reviewers tend to miss - the supplied head shell has a set screw which allows for azimuth adjustment. Mine was noticeably off out of the box and the micro-line cartridge sounded very unbalanced until I dialed in the azimuth. I'm not at all a golden ear but I do actually hear the differences with proper set up given all the cartridge and geometry fussing about for setup. I've since bought a bunch of head shells to experiment and realized after the fact most of the cheap ones do not allow azimuth changes - I encourage buying ones which do allow for azimuth adjustment. Absolutely love the TT. Mine did not come with a 3mm spacer as mentioned by some other reviewers, so again - the 103 needs one. The tonearm on the black model is silver not black - doesn't bother me - maybe just a variation on later shipping models since I bought mine roughly Feb 2024. Copied most of this from other videos since I see this info often missing.

My takeaways from this video: 1) When you start talking about packaging it really gives the game away that there's not much to be seen here. 2) The internal Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) in both the G and GR has always been a weak point of the design, but SMPS's keep manufacturing costs down. On the GR2 they've simply paid more attention to the issues caused by the SMPS -- vibrations and stray noise -- for which there is plenty of technology out there (especially from the medical and scientific fields) that they can rebrand as new and revolutionary. 3) Would be interested to hear how they managed on this upgrade, but would be surprised if it beats an exterior chassis for a toroidal transformer with umbilical linear PSU (off the shelf upgrades can be bought, but this can also be diy'ed). 4) Good news is that the GR mk1 is being reduced. I would expect the SL-1200G (which has exactly the same SMPS in it as the GR1) will get an upgrade soon, at which point we'll also learn about how noisy the PSU was... :)

@@kevinwalker8639 Similar style to a SL-1210 MK7., nothing new. It would be refreshing to see Technics actually change something on the top plate layout, but they won’t because that will cost extra $.

Disappointing that Technics seems to have gone cheap on build quality and quality control compared to the MK2s. Seeing many reviews pointing out issues and yet you have MK2s that have been perfect from new and still running great years later!

I own a pair of GRs and can confirm the pitch is far from accurate. It seems to jump in discrete increments, not even close to the mk2/mk5's pitch accuracy.

@@alexhudson3574 I was a scratch DJ for a touring band and also a DJ, everything from rave, house, reggae, soul, funk to gabba. At one point I had 5 Technics, I did a few mixes with 5 decks. My set up for years was with 3 decks. Towards the end of my time with the band and DJing,( Im retired now), I switched over to i-phone with a DJ controller which was a revelation, I'll never go back to vinyl, no more jumping needles which was a major headache for me, no more feeding back when you turn up the bass next to loud speakers, and to be honest - the sound quality of vinyl is terrible , even a brand new record you get crackling in the background. Ive still got a pair of Technics, which I mainly use to listen to records before I sell them on discogs. The other good thing about DJing with a i-phone is that when someone asks for a request Ive got access to every song ever made,,and it fits in one hand,,no more heavy ass boxes of vinyl records
