Speakers, in a monitor. Why did Apple bother? They make sense, sort of, if this was a salvaged attempt at a new 27 inch iMac (Pro), but no one wants to pay for engineering of an Atmos sound system, or a 12MP camera (let me pick up my monitor, drag it to the window to snap a photo of a bird, or just you know, grab my phone and do the same). Incorporating a groove to rest an iPhone, or to sidecar an iPad would have made far more sense. I think Apple was going to make a very powerful 27 inch iMac, but realized the cooling required made it ‘thick’. Rather than accepting that, they split the project into two products, hence the totally unnecessary camera and Atmos speakers coupled to the (very) familiar 5k panel, that only seems like a complete product when paired with the Studio. Apple seems to be right back in that Ive rut. Too bad.

Yeah 2 parts and you get to pay MORE than twice. This is a perfectly OK computer other than the massive fans, but it is wildly over-engineered and over priced for the category. Taking away the perfectly productive 27" iMac 27" and "replacing" it with a bulkier set up that costs 2 to 3 times as much, means you have half to one third the workstations for your budget. People are still the slowest component in a workstation. Radically speeding up the hardware no longer makes much difference. There is a point where good enough cpu is good enough, what we need is access to a good large user interface, which means a large sharp display. 27" Retina pretty well nails it, but bigger would be better for seeing video/audio tracks and more detail in visual images/data. Here's what people don't talk about tho : the 2017 iMac Pro. Those were just... too powerful. Apple still sell them btw, just in the "refurbished" section, but I highly suspect that they don't want you to know that they still have them in stock is all. I mean... Xeon 18 cores W chip in an all-in-one?!!! This still smokes M1 in terms of sheer computational power. It's completely insane and we don't talk nearly enough about this. I think this is partly why iMacs will be abandoned : people have displays or want to buy their own and couple them with a mac mini/mac studio; they can make more money by selling the computer and the display separately; and, most importantly, they've already been to the very end of the road of iMac optimization in 2017! There's just no way you can cram more power than a freaking Xeon 18 cores chip into a iMac. They just can't improve it further, but they don't wanna tell you.

I'd love to see a comparison between a DIY 5K iMac display and the new Studio Display. I bet that they are extremely similar in quality but drastically different in cost. Furthermore, I predict there will soon be a surplus of used 5K iMacs with (still fantastic) displays that have been replaced with Apple Silicon machines. Converting an old 5K iMac into a monitor is probably not an easy beginner project, but with the extreme potential for savings compared to the Studio Display (and the almost identical LCD quality), this might make much more sense than buying a new monitor for some people.

I think you're very much underselling the M1 Ultra as not being quite so exciting. For the chip-nerd, it is BY FAR the most interesting and frankly unexpected (in the way it is technically done) thing here. Yes, multi-die chips and packaging are the future and everyone is working on it, and its been the direction Apple was rumored to be going in as well. But this is much different from what is shipping in, for example, AMD Ryzen chiplets. That interconnect is nowhere near as fast, and those cores are not treated the same - die-to-die communication is much higher latency, they don't access the whole cache in the same way. And that is for CPU cores. The speed is even more important for large GPUs. Anything else we've seen out there (as far as know, I'm not an expert, I could be wrong) addresses the GPUs as separate - connected, yes, but not the same GPU, it's not transparent, which means that software has to be written in such a way as to target that. What they have done here - or CLAIM to have done here, we shall see - is build an interconnect that is fast and efficient enough for it to basically present to the system as one chip, one GPU, which is nuts. Someone was gonna crack this at some point, but I wasn't expecting it to be so soon and not necessarily Apple, good as their chip design is. Maybe they're getting the tech from TSMC, I have no idea. Credit here to Ryan Smith (AnandTech EiC), read his tweets and AnandTech article if you wanna know more (and probably better explained).

I’ve been a Mac Mini user since they first came out, and have owned every generation (they make for good hand-me-down gifts as well). My company provides me with a new Mac laptop every 2-3 years so I never felt the need to have a personal laptop, and therefore the desktop Mini was a good option. In all that time I have *never* bought an Apple display. Maybe if I was a pro doing photo editing I would, but then I wouldn’t mind paying pro prices. I think with the new Mac Studio, the sweet spot for me is going to be the $4000 base package M1 Ultra which includes 64GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. For the average home user, the sweet spot is probably the M1 Max package with an upgraded SSD to 1 or 2 TB which would end up costing $2200-2500. That is very reasonable when compared to a high end PC, plus you’re getting MacOS versus Windows. I’ll be happy with a bog standard 4K display, and I have an apple keyboard and touchpad already.

@tedrodenborn81722 жыл бұрын
@@outofahat9363 , I did. Yes, that's really expensive, but for me it was a value proposition: The only way you can get the maximum speeds Apple claims for their drives, is by getting the 8TB array. And yes, I say array, because they do appear to be an array of some kind, which is how Apple is getting these unprecedented speeds. The 4TB one is close, but the drop-off continues as the drives get smaller. The fastest external RAID drive I have, is a striped set of nVME drives, that's 4TB, and respectably gets around 2,500 Mb/s, sometimes a little more. The 4TB drive in my MacBook Pro 16" is more than double that. I think that if you're able to find an array that can stripe a set of drives to speeds even close to what Apple currently has, you'd be approaching that $2k price tag pretty quickly for 8TB. Even if you're short, would you rather have the data be bussed through a Thunderbolt connection, or through the ridiculous 800 GB/s bandwidth of the SOC? Isn't that worth whatever extra we're talking about here? I can't upgrade the drive beyond my purchase, so I'm making sure I get the most for my dollar. Considering that merely upgrading to M1 has increased my productivity and overall output, this is a no brainer. This fully specced out computer will easily have paid for itself by this time next year. And I plan for it to last well beyond.

Hot take 🔥 - the iPad Air brand new isn’t worth it for almost anyone. Hear me out. The iPad Air starts at 599$ for the 64GB model, which I think is not enough storage for most people. The next bump up in memory is 256GB, and it costs 749$ (150$ more!). If that’s the case, I think most people should pay just 50$ more and get the 128GB iPad Pro 11’ (799$). For an extra 50$ they’ll get better screen and face ID. It’s true that they’ll “only” have 128GB instead of 256GB, but I think 128GB is absolutely enough for most people. If the iPad Air would start at 128GB it would be a different story, but that is not the case right now. The only people that should buy an iPad Air in my opinion are: 1. People who use they’re iPad Air (64GB) for basic tasks only, and care more about saving money than longevity (which is very reasonable, it’s 200$ more overall). I acknowledge these people exist, but I think most of them would actually be better of saving even more money and get the basic iPad for just 329$. 2. People who buy the iPad Air (256GB) refurbished or at a discount. Does anyone else agree?

I recently convinced my dad to not only downgrade his Netflix account but to outright cancel Apple TV+. I've enjoyed Ted Lasso and a few films and my dad definitely got more use out of it than I did but it got to the point where he was paying for it and not really using it and with price inflation going absolutely through the roof lately, it was time to cut it. Apple are the late comer to the streaming wars but their approach just doesn't really require the monthly commitment that pretty much every other service has. Heck, even Disney+ was late to the party but they had a huge back catalog they could rely on and the purchase of Fox only boosted that catalog even more, something that Apple doesn't have. They're pretty much the only streaming service starting from scratch.

I was shocked by the performance that I got with the new MBP over a 2019 iMac that did everything I asked it to do, though with some fan grumpiness. My only complaints are, if you are going to put all of that I/O on it, particularly in the front, AND you designed this to be used with your new monitor with built in speakers that don't need 3.5mm jack to run, why on earth hide the headphone jack in the rear? Just put it next to the sd card slot. That's poor experience design. BUT, coming from the 5K iMac, I'd need that 5k Studio Display; the iMac's display is fantastic and I've previously considered going M1 Mini and a 4k screen, but it's not a patch on it. And now that the 5k iMac is dead, I'm not sure I can swallow going for a screen that cost more than my entire iMac!

If your willing to take a risk, you can open your iMac, remove everything in it, except the display, then buy some adapters that convert the signal from the iMacs screen into USB-C/HDMI for the Mac Studio.

Definitely ordering the Mac mini since I'm on vacation in LA from Michigan. Ironically my first job was a place called CityMac in high school so at 16 I was technically Apple certified as a product professional and sales professional and we got these awesome little diplomas and metal Apple pins

the midnight green color is the same color that shows up when you display gray on an OLED panel that's too dim. fitting.

I completely agree with you on the monitor situation. Can you please do a video on some display recommendations for mac? I’m a video editor and have been looking to replace my aging 2017 34” LG ultra wide curved.

I really like the new wide angle shot with the kitchen in the background, but the shadow on the wall in the bottom right is kind of distracting

I ordered a Macbook air around a week and a half ago. Loving it and nothing announced did anything for me personally

I’m still using an iPhone X max, an iPad Air 2, and a 2015 27 inch iMac with a solid-state hard drive. I do music production and my iMac is more than powerful enough. I will probably look at the M2 when it comes out if my present iMAC starts giving me any problem, right now if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Thanks for the video

The only hope for a larger iMac is the fact that they still list the current iMac as '24" iMac' which is kind of unusual if it's going to be the only model going forward. The main aspect of the Studio Display that irks me is that it's only a couple of hundred cheaper than the last 27' iMac but doesn't feature a computer or mouse/keyboard. It's a significantly lower value proposition.

Great summary and visuals. Glad to see you’re back to the old quality in your new studio. 👍🏻
