They just put the old ones on clearance and I grabbed 3 of them for $33. I made them all custom with different scale grinds. It is wood on the red ones. The patterns that came out on them look awesome. Good show friend

Added one of these to my kit a few weeks ago. It replaced the old model which served me well for years. I expect no less from the new model. The handle and lack of blade coating is a definite step up from the old model. The new sheath sucks though. No retention at all. Turn it upside down and the knife just falls out. I tried the old model sheath and it is a no go. I need to put the new style sheath in some boiling water and see if I can fix the retention. Overall I am happy though. I would buy it again. It is a lot of knife for less than $20!

Very impressive at that piece point especially. So often I see expensive blades that are thoughtlessly designed, and priced high only because of the apparent marketability of the steel. But this looks like some thought & care went into it, so that it would be useful and easy to care for. I have seen Ozark Trail items at the low end of the price spectrum a lot and not looked at them carefully because of the economy price point. But your review suggests this brand is worth a serious consideration. Thanks, as airways, for sharing your observations.

Good looking knife, and a great price. I personally don't throw, batton or pry with my knives, and I don't use my tomahawk or my hammer to cut up my steaks. I've grown up hunting and fishing and camping, and worked my whole life working construction and mechanicing. My dad always taught me, use the right tool for the job. Good video!

This knife is an almost exact copy of the old Buck Reaper 620. The 7cr17mov steel is okay, but a little out of place on a larger knife that needs some more impact resistance. It has a little too much chromium, so the toughness suffers. Buck's choice of 420hc made sense, since that alloy retains pretty good toughness for a stainless steel by keeping the chromium down to about 13%. I do have the old version of the Ozark Trail with the orange/black scales. I think that one uses stabilized wood/epoxy, not plastic for the scales. They were a little thin and not quite flat, so I popped them off, fixed the warp and added a G10 liner on each side. Felt real good in the hand, but had fit problems at the sheath entry, so I did some sloped shaving to make it clear and snap in. So now it is a much better knife. Tuning up the handle in the new version was the obvious easy choice. They should also bump the steel up to 8cr13mov or 8cr14mov. More carbon and less chromium for chopping. The knife design is perfect for slicing AND some chopping, so they should try to limit the rolling and chipping during chopping.

7cr17mov is a modified 440a , the edge retention is better than 420HC or !4c28n , it falls short on toughness compared to the other mentioned steels but is not so low as its a worry , toughness for 420HC and 14c28n is 9 for 7cr17mov is 4.5 , edge retention for 420Hc is 2.5 for 14c28n it is 3 for 7cr17mov it is again 4.5

I’ve got the first models from about 15 years ago,with the reddish colored handle,and the ozark trail symbol is actually a stamped out hole verse etched,and it’s a shorter blade ,and has a cheaper sheath. Mine take a edge very well, but blade edge and tip seems like it could be its weak point? The new model seems to be a thicker blade and couldn’t go wrong with the price.

@jrbailey320820 күн бұрын
@@411Outdoors I appreciate the response. I'm one of those 'odd ducks' that has been fighting the onslaught of the old 'move to metric' movements (I'm a Boomer, so I go back a ways.) that were so prevalent from the 60's to the early 90's. I simply despise metric and still use SAE as the norm: I don't have to 'guess' how thick something is when someone stipulates a metric figure; ie, 12mm is 'about' half an inch, so 6mm is 'about' a 1/4". it's just a burr under my saddle. I like your channel, even though most of the physical defense techniques you illustrate are not useable for a crippled up old Geezer like me. I have the head knowledge of the basics (former heavyweight wrestler, noseguard, shot putter), but this Walking Corpse of mine no longer allows me to even use the elbow basics you so articulately presented the other day (well done by the by); the 'spirit is willing' but the flesh just sucks. I'm currently doing research for a quality sword can, something a step up from the Cold Steel Aluminum Sword Cane (a decent offering and useable), but within a reasonable price range ($150 ceiling). Hard to find what I seek, which is a true double edge 'arming style' with a nod to the shorter rapiers of days gone (strong enough for 'chopping actions' but nimble enough with a good point for stabbing actions). The problem we Geezers face is that the overwhelming majority of us CANNOT 'retreat to a safe place': we are TOO SLOW, our joints are less than potent, and our muscles lack the strength to do proper movements in a power sense. Technique within our limited physical abilities is our forte, and so it is that emphasis which I seek to gain knowledge. I like your channel, I share it, recommend it, and watch it most of the time (some offerings of certain weapons or training are outside my abilities, so I pass on those), so don't take my ardent rejection of your metric use as a serious negative; I'm just 'piping up' in favor of the American measurement system. Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY
