A gathering of Gnomes celebrates the departing Spring migration of a flock of common cranes. Realizing the trip has become very perilous, Millius asks David and Tomte to accompany an elderly Gnome ornithologist, Birdie. David meets and travels on Silver, the patriarch and flock leader. He also meets Silver's mate, Gracie and their three fledglings. Tomte is introduced to Flash, a cocky, young crane who aspires to be leader of the flock. The cranes take flight and the migration begins.
