I loved this sort of program as a child and teenager in London, it was NEW Year, we didn't have anything else happening. It still feels good and I am in my 70s

I remember my parents, Grandparents and their friends would drink & sing, everybody took a turn and everybody had a 'signature tune' haha it was superb - I miss it very much, but it feels like our once singular Scottish culture is being systematically eradicated - the 2019 Hogmanay show was a blatant example of this defacement - extremely sad. I'm sure many down south feel similar.

New Year's Eve was the one night of the year that BBC Scotland or Scottish/Grampian TV were networked across the whole country for Hogmanay. I am old enough to remember the White Heather Club where you could see Andy Stewart, Kenneth McKellar and Moira Anderson going through their paces. It was as much of a tradition as The Queen.

@Stephenguppy3466 I'am really interested in old music programmes on Scottish Television and Grampian Television. My favourites are John Carmichael's Northern Nights and Thingummyjig, Shindig with Sydney Devine, Andy Stewart Andy's Party. 🙂

@@lizcole3975 It is a fab style of program. They wanted to 'change the business model' of New Year, it seems. Not people in the house watching these lovely shows...But pouring money into the corporations in capital city hotels, transport, hospitality, souvenirs, and firework companies and capital cities' GDP...It was the corporatisation of New Year ... Staying at hame didn't generate money for the corporations and promote the corporations as well! ; ) K

A truly cheap way for the ITV network to see in the new year, was to simply hand it over to Scottish Television. The other franchises never really cared about New Year's Eve, often offering token gesture of shows. However they could always reply on Scottish Television, as Hogmanay was (and still is) huge in Scotland, bigger than Christmas.

The Hogmanay Shows from the two years before this one were much better. After this it was downhill all the way until it got so bad it was unwatchable.
@mikeauld79715 жыл бұрын
Oh dear. One year after BBC Gleneagles, STV still keeping the faith here. They must have seen how dated it was at the time, and so next year went with Muriel Gray, Jimmy Mulville. Scot purists hated the 86 Hogmanay show even before it aired, and STV got cold feet and went back to the singing shortbread the next year. Craig Ferguson writes about it in his autobiography - it’s a good read btw
@ivandinsmore62174 жыл бұрын

@simonguitarman I think the idea was that STV would have their big night on the ITV network (i.e :- Hogmanay) while the larger companies South of the border would have a good booze-up at their studios until STV's show ended, usually around 12.15-12.30 am
