As one who has been in many firefights in Vietnam, I wrote the NY Times a letter expressing my doubts about that article. The shock of battle and the fright of death destroy sexual desire in combatants as well as the want even to eat. It's just common psychological sense and can be verified by anyone who has ever been in a firefight of the equivalence of Oct 7. What civilians don’t know is that rapes do occur in war, but never in the heat of battle, especially of such high intensity. For instance, in WWII, thousands of German women were raped in the Russian capture of Berlin but not by the attacking troops; the following troop waves after the battle were the offenders. In a battle with that many casualties, I am certain that no Hamas fighter pulled his pants down to use the bathroom. That close to death, the only woman a combatant would think about would be his mother!

As someone who has worked professionally investigating sexual violence - If much of the NYT article is based on the video of the deceased woman - much more evidence is required: did anyone tamper with the body before it was filmed? eg. moving the position of the body etc., there was no autopsy re: to look for signs of sexual violence and to test for semen - to identify the offender or to identify if it was her husband's. As a side matter - no respect has been shown to the deceased woman if this video has been circulated to the media. There were no eye witnesses of any sexual violence to this woman etc. In order to claim sexual violence there needs to be proof/evidence/witnesses/victim statements and there is none in relation to this woman, yet the media has run with false information circulated by Israeli leadership to gain sympathy and support and to try and justify their death and destruction in Gaza.

Many of us have lost friends for speaking up for the truth against recurring revelations of blatant lies made by the Israeli officials. For those of us that have either been victims of or have fought against perpetrators of sexual violence and the dysfunctional systems that make sexual violence more likely to occur, the loss of relationships predicated on falsely implanted beliefs and conflict is particularly upsetting and can't really be adequately undone. The NYT article was simultaneously inflammatory, emphatic, and completely devoid of the evidence once would expect given the same. I read it with dread, especially given that it came out as the genocide waged against Palestinians was becoming much more easily perceived. I remain horrified, and I feel for those still believing the lies that will later likely regret being taken in by malevolent state actors. My heart goes out to those lost on 7 October whose trauma has been made worse by the lies. The killing must stop and the apartheid must end. A consideration here is the " music festival " where these rapes take place was actually a 2 day event where most people are sleep deprived and using various psychedelic drugs. Both of you discussed it very professionally. As a survivor myself, I felt very nauseous when I heard some claims, and I scrutinized every piece of evidence I could find precisely because of the barbaric nature of these stories. Rape is a weapon of power. It has been an issue in wartime but you're correct...after combat has ceased. But it's also more common in places like prisons where the victims are unable to flee or to complain. It's more likely to be used to control another person than for sexual gratification.

The problem is that even though I was willing to be compassionate for the lives lost on Oct 7th, and it would have been easy to criticize Hamas for kidnapping civilians. But to first find out that so many were killed by their own army and then to hear so many lies trying to make the day seem much more dramatic and violent than it clearly was. I have yet to see anyone who can convince me that Hamas was responsible for more than 100 civilians deaths including those caught in the crossfire. They should have left it alone. Its often possible to tell stories of violence are not true because they include slasher movie style extreme levels of gore. Real violence, either sexual or not, is plenty brutal and horrifying all by itself but when inventing stories people often have to search the only reference they have commonly had for it, TV and movies. The released hostages consistently report that they were treated well by their Hamas captors.
