Another mysterious accident this time in the Newark Bay. An ordinary scoot across the bay quickly turns to disaster when the CNJ commuter plunges over the bridge. But how can this happen when there was every precaution possible to stop such an accident?

a possible explanation would be in that early EMD GP9's sometimes had problems with Carbon Monoxide leaks into the cabin, though no other fatal cases were known, lesser degrees of poisoning were recorded... such poisoning would be easily masked by the effects of drowning, and would explain a very subtle incapacitation of both crew members, with possibly the weight of one fully opening the throttle to result in the excessive speed... Would that sound possible? What do people think of such an explanation?

My take on this is both engineers where dead asleep because there is no other way to explain this accident. Probably also rigged the deathman switch, that was common practice in the old days.

No dead man switch on this engine, I believe that both crewmen were either asleep on just not paying attention.

@@francoisdvanderwesthuizen I think being asleep is the main factor anyway. I mean missing 3 red signals in a row and 50mph is just another indirect indication that someone was not paying attention at all.

One of my earliest memories is my mom and I watching the recovery efforts the next day, and seeing a train car full of scuba divers pull up to the bridge area. Years later I took EMT training from Dr. Francis Boyle, who was the first doctor on the scene of this disaster. In discussing the disaster, he said what he saw in the passenger cars equaled what he had seen on the battlefield in WW2.

The way it works in the UK is that our dead man's pedal (Driver safety device) is built in with the Driver vigilance device. The driver has to keep the pedal depressed whilst driving, but if the driver hasn't touched any controls in 30 secs the DVD will sound an alarm. The driver then has to lift his foot off the pedal and depress it again to reset the system and prevent an emer brake application, so using brake shoes or a heavy kit bag wouldn't work in the UK.

A couple quick corrections here. A 1:07 it's stated that the train consisted of two GP7's whereas at 5:40 it's mentioned the power for the train was two GP9's which would be correct. The second correction being at 5:20 in reference to the dead mans pedal. It's stated that if the pedal does not remain pressed down while the consist is in motion the train will make a emergency stop. While the stop part of that statement is true, the train won't go into emergency but rather a full service brake application will be applied in the same fashion as with modern PTC.

I wonder if both the diesel locomotives and coaches are still around today in the 21st century? Probably not. At least it’s not as terrible as the Louisiana one, more people were able to survive and free themselves in time. But what baffled me is why the train didn’t stop with the signal or at least didn’t attempt to stop but just kept going in a dive. It makes me think to the Moorgate tube crash in UK (the driver in that case was alone) also in that case of the cause of the accident remains unknown. Just curious if the bridge had a specific time schedule for the lift up and down, and if yes, did the conductors of the trains that used those track known the time schedule? It’s makes the entire happenings more creepy the fact that the cause is unknown.

Since the train kept going and the crew drowned, I think the brakes were jammed and could not be activated. The crew probably were working frantically to get it to unstuck and would not bail out of the locomotive due to the speed and since they were on the bridge. That's my theory. What do you think?
