Harrow and Wealdstone train disaster 67 years later

1 train crashing is bad enough, 2 trains colliding is even worse, but a 3 train crash is nothing more than a terrible catastrophe as was the case at Harrow and Wealdstone.
This may of been rushed together due to me totally forgetting to do this thanks to all the stress October has put me through. This also had to go under a script rewrite at the last minute during editing due to me not liking the original (hence the narration clips sounding different in some parts) But I think it's worth it.

As a modern day UK railwayman, who lives in one of the cities involved in this accident I find a few things interesting in this video. 1. For an American, your pronunciation of Ruislip was outstanding! 2. Despite that and without wanting to be perceived as having a go . . . Wealdstone is pronounced 'Wield (as in to wield a sword) - stun' 3. AWS and its Successor TPWS are now widespread across UK railways, and had the US implemented similar systems (and safeguards associated with those systems such as Morpeth boards and driver reminder appliances) crashes such as the recent Frankford Jn. Incident and the more historical Silver springs collision would've almost certainly been avoided. 4. It's of note that another train was named 'City of Glasgow' many years later - this too was involved in a crash and was, infact, written off. On Feburary 23rd, 2007 - five year old Virgin Trains Pendolino no. 390033 'City of Glasgow' hit an improperly maintained set of points at Grayrigg in Cumbria, North west England. The train derailed, travelling at approximately 90mph and toppled down an embankment. 1 passenger sadly died, but 12 years later it remains (touch wood) the last incident on UK railways in which a fare paying passenger lost their life. I'd be interested to see you cover the Grayrigg derailment - but I would cover it together with the Potters Bar and Hatfield crashes aswell. All three were down to poor track maintenance (the first two, poor maintenance of switches and the 3rd was poor rail condition leading to a rail shattering under the speeding train).

@@Spacebug111 indeed. Sadly since writing this, two years ago, there has been another fatal rail crash in the UK. A driver, conductor and passenger killed at Carmont in Aberdeenshire in August 2020 due to their train colliding with a landslip (due to an improperly built and maintained drainage channel) and derailing at 75mph.

I sometimes call this disaster The British Railways Great Train Wreck of 1952 given how catastrophic it looked and how big the wreckage looked at that station. It's very sad to what had happened in this accident that not many people would know about, but I doubt for sure the AWS would've worked on steam locomotives; given how it would've cost a lot to install in them all at the time and the difficulties it would have been like in today's world. True Fact: (For those who don't know) 46202 'Princess Anne' was a successful experimental turbine locomotive in it's early years on the LMS before it was rebuilt 2 months before the tragic wreck. 71000 'Duke Of Gloucester', the only Standard Class 8 of it's kind, is said to have the original salvaged pieces from 'Princess Anne' after she was scrapped.

This was a rather shameful accident. To make things more disturbing, I’ve read that some witnesses remember seeing bodies flying through the air. Also the fact that the station clock stopped at the exact time of the accident: 8:19am. That should be an interesting concept for a horror movie. And one thing is worth pointing out, 4 Jubilee locomotives and 3 Princess Coronation Pacifics have been preserved.

As a graduate Engineer, I worked in the Chief Civil Engineers Department Euston in 1960. Many of the staff travelled on the Euston bound local train and those who had survived said that the office was eerily quiet that morning. One Engineer said that, as he was late for the train, he was running across the footbridge, which was parly demolished in the accident, and the next thing found himself sitting on the track ballast

I was wondering if you would make a video on this accident. I remember seeing this on Runaway Trains. The sight of the carnage is just chilling. Seeing the coaches AND engines completely is something else.

Wow didn't realise how bad it actually was as wasn't born til the 80's but remember my uncle talking about it growing up as he used to get one of those trains to harrow & wealdstone every day for work but that day was his day off, scared me to think he could have died then and never met him, feel for all the people that died and were injured that day and for all their families

Hey, any chance you could do a video on the Southern Pacific roundhouse explosion of 1912, is said to be one of the worst railroad disasters in history due to the devastating destruction of the incident.

I was 5, very nearly 6 years old at the time of the crash, living at 12 Station Rod, Harrow, just over the bridge from the Harrow & Wealdstone station. Shortly before I was to leave home and walk over the bridge to St Josephs school in Wealdstone there was a big 'crumph' kind of sound. More a concussion than a crashing sound. My mother wondered if the Harrow Gasworks had "gone up again" as it had previously exploded in the past. Soon after I left home and started the 3/4 mile walk to school. As I neared the top of the bridge I peaked through some knot holes in the wooden plank fence that blocked the view of the station from traffic crossing the bridge. This was a daily feature of my walk, looking through the knot holes to see trains stopped or passing through the station each morning. The fog I thought was swirling around was most likely steam, smoke and dust from the accident below. I could tell something was not right but before I could get to a knot hole with a better view a Bobby ran up to me and yelled I shouldn't look. He wanted me to go back home but I insisted that I had to get to school as my Mum would have left to go to her job at the USAF base at Ruislip, mentioned in the commentary, where she worked behind a counter in the Vase Exchange (BX). The Bobby escorted me over the bridge and down the other side where pandemonium was breaking out. There were police cars, buses, ambulances and lots of people crowded around where the station entrance was and traffic was being stopped from crossing the bridge. The bobby escorted me well past the mayhem and watched to see I didn't turn around and come back. After school, as was my usual routine, I walked home. But when I reached the station I was stopped from crossing the bridge, again by a Bobby. He didn't believe that I live just over the bridge and kept me there for about an hour until another Bobby arrived from the road block over the bridge. He had my Mum with him who had been frantically trying to convince him her little boy would be trying to get home over the bridge. We were then both escorted home over the bridge right to our front door. My most lasting memory of that day and the following days is the smell. I love the smell of steam engines but this was very different. The fog carried the dust and dirt around and the smell lingered for quite some time. Considering the time of year and how badly London was polluted in those times from coal fire smoke and gross polluting lorries and buses it was surprising. The local popular opinion at the time was that the death toll was about double the official count. So many bodies were crushed and mutilated it was very difficult for them to be recovered whole or even substantially. Many were never identified at all. It was still soon after WWII and people were suffering serious relationship problems. It was believed that many people took the 'opportunity' of the crash to 'disappear', leaving spouses and families behind and likely escaping debts in the process. Some research decades ago concluded that the actual death toll was probably just over 180 people, based upon available public and police records at the time.

I've heard much of this accident. It's crazy how much destruction happened in such a short time and that the force of the collision was enough to freeze time on the station clocktower. If this accident wouldn't have happened, that would have been two speeding express trains barreling through the station at once while the commuter train was beginning to set out. That sound effect you used was brutal, but fitting for what happened. Once again, an example of it being cheaper to have the accident than install new safety equipment. Sure AWS was in it's early years but something is better than nothing

Assuming you will do the Back Bay Crash on December 12th, as many people are asking you to, I would like to point out some details worth noting: - The MBTA Coach which was destroyed was #315. - The MBTA train had two Cab Cars up at the front, which were 1614 (leading) and 1525. Both were unharmed and returned to service. 1614 is still in service today, however, it's controls have been deactivated, so it can no longer lead trains. 1525 was eventually put out of service, and sat in storage for a while, until it was finally scrapped in 2014 for parts to keep the other MBB cars running. - Contrary to some belief, only two trailing Amtrak cars were actually scrapped. Five simply derailed. - An MBTA employee named Joe Burgess was deadheading on board train #906, and he was inside 1073's cab. When the train reached Canton Junction shortly before the crash, he saw his ex-girlfriend getting on board the train, and he decided to go back and greet her. This decision saved his life, and prevented what would have likely been the only casualty. - MBTA F40PHM-2C #1036 was specifically built as a replacement for 1073, and Amtrak legally had to pay all the funding for it's purchase, due to having claimed full responsibility for the crash which destroyed the engine it was to replace.
