I've had surprising success modding old-school kitchen knives. I initially learned by playing with two that I bought at a thrift store for $2. Then I spent $10 on an Old Hickory Butcher knife and did a decent job reshaping it.

Great ro see tou back Joe. Nice line up of knives. Your Mobley build looks good. I bet it will be great once you get a handle on it. I agree with you. Folks should try to make their own knives. My last build was a mocotaugan. I had wanted one for a long time but just couldnt justify the cost. I had a chunk of beech burl I had harvested and bought a Nicholson file for $7 and made one for a total of $26. I am really proud of it too. Looks great and carves like a boss. Have a great weekend my friend.

I was a knife dealer and in retirement, I refurbish/modify knives/hatchets/axes/swords. Swiss army knife. The minimum. Based upon a discussion I had some 40 years ago with Ron Hood. He wanted a saw. I wanted a scissors. Scissors because I am down and out if I have ragged toenails/fingernails, unable to neatly cut things, and or unable to clean my nails. The minimum model is the Huntsman. This was before Leatherman tools. Leatherman tools. Everyone seems to bid up the used Waves. Any lesser model than a Wave, but having a scissors is fine. Daily carry knife? A used/abused original Spyderco Endura (cannot take apart model). Purchased with a broken clip that was fully removed. Plain blade. If taken from me or lost, no biggie. Fits in pocket. Remember, the balloon has not gone up. There is no shtf right now. And, if you don't have a tool with you, you might as well understand you will not be high up on the food chain. A safe queen is not going to help you.

I think the model if that Victorinox, is the "Deluxe Tinker". Main tools: large blade, scissors and pliers. Plus the usual can and bottle opener, small blade, toothpick, tweezer etc. With a Philips #2, hook and reamer on the back. I got one of these in the mail just one day ago. It's pretty much their answer to the Leatherman Squirt PS4, which I liked a lot but gave to a friend. I prefer Victorinox tools and own a small collection of them.

I also got an ld51, won it through a gaw. It's a brick to carry, literally heavy as hell, much heavier than a leatherman wave + a CS Large Voyager(bd1). I like how many tools it has, but the pliers are very cheap and useless.

Oddly enough, it's pronounced "rake." It's so timely that you are showing this. I have been ogling this very model for a little while now. It seems to have all the strengths of a good Victorinox, but with better materials. I love your cheapest knife! I keep promising myself to take a shot at making a knife.
