Many people ask what's the next step after simple color studies. And I say it's time to speed things up before we get to the next super creative step

Thanks so much for this inspiring set of four speed paintings, Jeremy. I really admire your tenacity and resolve avoiding getting lost in the details like you say in this one. I guess part of that is helped by the clock bearing down on us while doing an exercise like this, right? If you don't have a "task master" at hand, I personally would easily drift off into the details in a specific area. I love that this pulls us out of that by force and makes us see the light and colour of the whole scene at once.

Hi Christopher! Yes, if we approach our first 10 minutes of a color study this way, or even our own art, so try and get a big picture push, it will make the remaining hour SOOO much easier to focus on those little details. The composition and colors will already be found and then it's all just clean up

Brilliant! Thank you Jeremy.. I'm not a digital artist, but work in soft pastels. Your videos are the most helpful I've come across (with regard to discussion of light and shadow and the use of neutrals). Loving the videos.. Please please please keep them coming. Thanks for being vulnerable too - an amazing artwork for 15 mins but clearly not finished..!

Thanks Jeremy! I had JUST finished your previous color studies the other day, so the timing could not have been better! I gave myself an hour for those, so shifting gears to just 15 minutes for these 4 were super challenging. I struggled a bit with 1 and 2, but hit my stride with 3 and 4. I am looking forward to what you have next in the pipeline!

Hi Jeremy, thank you for the 15 min painting . They help me see the variety of colors! Can you also make a speed painting video on portrait too? I just have a hard time to see different colors and color temperature on skin tone. I would love to learn how you simplify the skin tone colors !

OMG thank you for making these videos! I just did all 4 and learned so much. I work in watercolor and even though the process is completely different I feel like I learned a lot about seeing light and color more refined. I work light to dark so that was a huge swap to adjust to, but I enjoyed it. Thank you!!

I really enjoy following along in these - Inspired by your advice I've started trying these shorter colour studies, but I run into the problem that after 15 minutes, I haven't even gotten the initial blocks of colour right yet, so the shortest I've done is 1 hour. Do you have any advice for someone who's relatively new to painting, and really struggles to "see" colours? I particularly struggle with the desaturated colours of distant things.
@LightingMentor
@LightingMentor Жыл бұрын
If you're just beginning in this don't feel like you need to do it in only 15 minutes. Take a full hour or two if you need. Once it starts to become more easy then shrink your time. Also feel free to make a guess on a color and then check the original to se how close you were. Color studies are all about learning and growing, so use every means possible

Hello, I was wondering if you had any tips for drawing for extended periods of time without starting to ache. I am currently using a graphic tablet which I heard can exasperate posture problems, but I would love to hear your thoughts! Thank you

Very good question!! Yes, being very careful about ergonomics is important to prevent long term stress injuries. When I was at Pixar we had a person who's full time job was making sure people had the right chairs, and were sitting in a way that could be sustained for long term. I suggest you look up some videos about ergonomics for artists with tablets. If I find more info I will share too. Great question!

Would love to see how to move on from this scribble-blobby stage to an actual detailed painting. Is the next approach is to blurr/smudge all?
@LightingMentor
@LightingMentor Жыл бұрын
My process is to find the big shapes and colors first, and then reduce my brush size to paint in the smaller details. Depending on the level of final quality needed I will spend more time to get something very refined. I plan to show next steps of how to get those final details and refinement in future videos, so I hope this is helpful for you
