During week 1 of the 1973 NFL season, when the Washington Redskins blew out the San Diego Chargers, Redskins head coach George Allen did something incredibly bizarre when, despite his team leading 38-0, he refused to pull his starting quarterback for the backup. And after the game, Allen compared that decision to something that baseball managers do... even though it made no sense at all, even by his own weird standards

George Allen is doing something counterintuitive? Shocked, I tell you! As for baseball, I said in a recent JG9 chat that Gene Mauch's decision to go with Tommy John and Bruce Kison on 3 days' rest in the 1982 ALCS was dumb. What I forgot to mention was that he bypassed Ken Forsch in the starting rotation.

This is very similar to what happened 7 years later in the NASL between San Diego & Atlanta with legendary coach Ron Newman who is the only coach alongside Eddie Firmani to have coached in both the NASL & MLS. With San Diego up 6-0 at halftime & completely dominating the match, Newman decided to keep his entire starting XI out on the field for the second half, saying that they needed to gain fitness & match experience & saying that he wasn't "a basketball coach who needed to sub in players every 3 minutes". However what Newman did in the 2nd half completely contradicts this logic as with about 20 minutes to go, he instructed his entire starting XI to come out of the match as play was still going on. In basic terms he was attempting a mass line change similar to what you see in hockey. The referee immediately stopped play, went over to Newman & gave him a red card saying that he violated the league's substitution rule which stated that only 3 players could come in at a time. This whole controversy had little effect on the match as San Diego won 7-0 & afterwards Newman said that he did the mass substitution so that he could get himself ready for the indoor season of which he was also San Diego's coach. The crazy thing is that Newman or any other soccer coach would be able to get away with substituting their entire starting XI today due to the new substitution rules put in place by FIFA which allow for unlimited subs provided that they are done within 3 windows during the course of a match.

Nah, back then a lot of starting pitchers were going 9 innings because it was still the norm. Also had Kilmer gotten hurt they certainly wouldn't have lost much at the QB spot. In fact if you were able to check the stats of Jurgenson in all the games he played in 73-74 you would find that his numbers were up there with any Qb of that time. Had he been able to play in SB 7 it most likely would have been a Sonny outcome for the Redskins

Allen is pretty much describing how baseball games were managed when he was growing up in the 1920s and 1930s. My guess is that he had a lot more time for baseball when he was young than he did as an NFL football coach, and he had old-fashioned ideas about baseball. Kinda funny, but not that weird. They certainly didn't have PITCH COUNTS in 1973.

What I never liked about George Allen was that he had no patience for Rookies. He had a "the future is now" mentality that had no room for developing talent. While I won't say this was a failing strategy, it ultimately is if you sacrifice your future for championship contention now.

The real reason why? Jurgensen was actually the better QB, but Allen for whatever reason preferred Kilmer, and this was controversial even back then.

In partial defense of George, in a baseball game if a pitcher is shutting out the other team. And the score was 11-0, I would leave the pitcher in to give him a chance to pitch a shutout . But once he gave up the first run, out he goes.

If Billy Kilmer had been injured in the 4th quarter, Allen would've been in some mess. Leaving Kilmer in there when the Chargers had no hope of coming back to win was way too risky. As for saying that not much has changed since 1973, only Giannis Antetokounmpo could possibly take Bucks fans into a time machine. 😄

To play devil's advocate - your worst case scenario of bringing in Jurgensen is actually that Jurgensen gets hurt. Maybe Allen was protecting the backup? I believe he was really good for a backup, maybe as good as Kilmer.

Jurgenson had a great career, but he was pushing 40. Their situation of 2 fossil QBs, might have been the rare team to benefit from a 2 QB system. But, who knows.

I'm looking at baseball games from when George Allen was still a young man. I can find several games where the 1940 Cincinnati Reds had their starter play a complete game despite having a 10+ run lead [June2 vs Boston Bees, June 8 vs Brooklyn Dodgers, Sept. 15 @ Brooklyn Dodgers (the Dodgers must have sucked that year)]. So I think George Allen had some understanding of baseball but drifted away from it sometime after World War II. EDIT: Wait, the Dodgers finished that season 88-65-3. What was going on here? How did baseball games end in ties?

Or it could be the exact opposite where your team is struggling and your are losing big like let's say 38-0 in the 4th QTR and you leave your starting QB in the game and never take him out because he is struggling. Like in baseball if your starting pitcher is struggling and gives up 5 runs in the 1st inning he is taken out. Look at what happened to the 1990 Patriots in game where their starting QB Marc Wilson threw 6ints but he was never taken out and should have been.
