I'd imagine the NHL cracked down so hard on Pinto because they are trying to show their (gambling) sponsors that they have the integrity of the league and players locked down. It's probably got nothing to do with morality and ethics and everything to do with saving face with gambling advertisers. My second comment is how the heck did Pinto get caught? It seems like the easiest thing in the world to get a friend to bet for you. Ask him in person. No record. Hand him cash. No record. How'd he screw that up???

And they're fully aware of the problems, but don't care because the NHL is a business first and foremost. Gambling ads should be prohibited just as tobacco ads are, in my opinion - at least this is the case in Canada. Advertisements are of course necessary, and something has to fill in the time between periods, but gambling is despicable. The most annoying advertisements are the finance ones though (which is a fancy form of gambling for most people anyways). If you took a shot every time there was a Questrade ad on Sportsnet, you'd be blackout drunk before the second period began, and don't get me started on how bad most NHL players are at acting (looking at you, McDavid/Scotiabank).

Entertainment is worth billions. Trillions, even. Between sports, movies, television, video games, books, music - you name it. And one person or a small group of people can make things worth millions or more, as long as there's a market for what they make. All of those jobs you mention only affect people domestically, and while arguably more important, entertainment is something that anyone can obtain and is willing to spend money on which adds up to billions. You might spend $100 on a ticket to a game, but you won't pay a firefighter across the country $100, and neither will anyone else not directly affected by their actions. Capitalism is a bitch that only gives money to those whose services are deemed broadly valuable. And it's even worse when you consider those professions would pay even worse if it were privatized, again because people will only pay for what directly benefits them. I'm surprised we haven't seen it in hockey yet - players who did absolutely nothing wrong during a game, yet will still have gamblers mad at them because their actions affected the spread. (As if players are supposed to play with the spread in mind...) For example... your team is up 3-1 in the dying seconds when your opponents have their goalie pulled. You're given the puck and have a wide open lane to the empty net. You then score on the empty net. 4-1. Exactly what any hockey player would do in that situation, right? Now imagine some gambling addict flooding your social media DMs with hate messages, claiming that by scoring that goal, you had cost them a giant sum of money since they had bet your opponents to cover a +2.5 goal spread.

I predict at some point some major gambling scandal will hit one of the big four leagues where it will seriously damage their credibility. I figure referees would be the most likely culprit since they're paid so much less than players but the NBA already showed that fringe depth players can also have a financial incentive and I figure assistant coaches and front office personnel could also be involved. The leagues are probably aware of this possibility but might be "gambling" themselves in that if one of the four get nailed on something like that the other three can quickly distance themselves from the gambling sponsors. So the odds are 3/4 that you'll be fine which isn't too bad and until that day comes they can squeeze enough money out of these deals as they can.

I despise gambling in no uncertain terms. The League and all other media promoting it 24/7 is disgusting. All these "bet once, get $200" offers are even wearing me down; I've almost bet on a few games. If that's how it's affecting someone who can't stand it, I can't imagine the damage it's causing to someone who has a proclivity for gambling addiction. The whole thing is wrong.

I think ppl over exaggerate the whole gambling thing. Don’t like the ads or how “bad” it is who cares? It’s for ppl who are 18+.. if you can’t be mature enough to not blow out all of your money thats YOUR fault. Saying the league is taking advantage of ppl who are addicted is like saying ads for alcohol takes advantage of addicts😂 Ppl who blow away their money on gambling are gonna find a way to do it no matter what.

ciggies are for people who are 18+ (21+ in the states) but can't have joe camel lighting up a smoke on tv cause it might cause kids to smoke. so booze and gambling should also be banned from advertising for the same reason. fair is fair.

Bettman found his money hole in VGK. They're the most successful expansion team in NHL history. I think its like 6/7 post seasons, 3 WCF apperances, and 2 SCF appearances ( one their first year and two years ago.) VGK was knocking at the door from their inception and they slowly started throwing the ads in but the past two years? Every break is Fanduel or DraftKing now. I don't think the NHL is rigged or scripted. It would take a lot to do that but I do believe the zebras have more power due to gambling and they can change the flow of a game or even a series with their calls. If it was about money and betting fully , NYR and Edmonton would've been the most beneficial SCF. They would've broke bank if they made it turn out that way. But the Panthers make it, win 3 straight, and lose 3 straight, to make a game 7 with Edmonton and I'm assuming a lot of people bet on Edmonton because the Panthers got dog walked game 4 and 6. Gambling doesn't help the fans with trusting the sport either. I remember when VGK won and people thought it was scripted that way because Bettman needed Vegas to succeed. This last year I've heard the Panthers just stopped playing for 3 games so Edmonton can force a 7 and the over/under and money lines would be insane. I personally don't think its gotten to that point. You can't script this last playoff season, it was so insanely good. But a lot of controversial calls or lack of calls and the DoPS picking and choosing who will be suspended and who won't be suspended was the only thing to me that smelled funky.

Lately it feels like professional sports are done only for sports betting. I mean live courses on screen during SC games? Ridiculous. It is not going to a a virus, it is our greed.

Dude everyone now a days has a gambling problem. All of my friends “casually” gamble. I don’t think they realize how scary a gambling addiction can be. I get it if it’s only a little bit of money here and there that it doesn’t seem serious, but it’s a slippery slope - just like My WW2 veteran neighbor

Yeah, as long as you're not an idiot getting away with proxy betting is probably insanely easy. Also agre with the distaste for gambling. My favorite example was The Score app on my phone (not their betting app, their normal one). I wanted to know Heiman's salary and it wasn't listed on the app, but I could sure find the odds for every little micro bet I could place on him for the next game... It's kinda pathetic.

Every day I hear sportstalk pundits pick their parlay bets and if you follow up on those bets, they lose about 95-100% of them. That should be enough to tell you to stay away from gambling. My heart goes out to those that fall to its addiction though.

I don’t gamble but make it so players can only gamble on themselves and we could def have an interesting season. Maybe Mika and Kreider can parlay themselves to doing well in the playoffs “together” lol

Leagues taking gambling sponsor money is the worst thing they have done. Rething player salaries and contract length and adjust. No contract should go oever 5 years.

Respect. Gravitech or wtv doesn’t share your principles. He gets huge amount of cash just to promote addiction. Having the option of making more money doesn’t mean it’s illogical to refuse. It’s such a basic idea that I see escapes many many people when trying to “defend” wtv creator they like. Oh and you can like someone while still having disagreements; it’s called living in society.

Should be illegal for NHL NBA MLB etc to sponsor gambling. It’s even more sad with the NHL. They know they’re losing viewer count and popularity so they’re trying to take advantage of an addiction to get people interested in their sport. Maybe focus on actual marketing and you wouldn’t need 20-30 ads of sports gambling a game to grow your sport. They market gambling better than the market Mcdavid….

Hypocritical is an understatement, and the fact that the nhl is in bed with organized crime leaves them no room to judge anyone. This also begs into question the horrible officiating that has taken place over the last 2 to 3 seasons. Just my opinion
