My take on what makes an anime is that if it was storyboarded in Japan and the main creative force behind it was Japanese, then its an anime. What defines a modern day cartoon? They're mostly animated in east asian countries like Korea but what makes them a cartoon is that they are storyboarded in the West and the executive creative decisions are made by the Western team working on it. I think that idea should apply to anime as well.

Anime is a style in the sense that it's animation or artwork done by people of certain clusters of genes (Japanese) that have a certain style (way of articulation that differs) of which you can categorize stylistically anywhere from an individual artist all the way to the aggregate. You could say well what percentage of Japanese gene individuals do you need for something to be anime, it all comes down to preferences and where you want to draw lines like all definitions.

His plotting is dogshit, it's confused and really sloppy in how he handles secondary characters, and his stories always get extremely convoluted and repetitive. Monster was better because he had a great mc/antagonist duo he could build it on, but 20CB was a bit much

My definition for anime has over time naturally come to be more in line with a feeling than anything else. Anime is anything that “feels” like anime. If you’re in the mood to watch anime and you sit down to watch Castlevania or Avatar you’ll leave being satisfied in that decision, so they are anime. If something “feels” like anime and gives you satisfaction in that than it is in fact “anime,” end of discussion.

I just think of what I want to watch before I decide to watch something, really not hard. Open up a database to get objective information rather than reading reviews. Nothing wrong with rewatching something you know you'll enjoy either. FOMO is so easily ignorable I don't know why people struggle. Just go to sleep. Who cares about catching up. Once you get to purgatory are you really going to condemn yourself having seen 2 movies once rather than a single movie twice?
