Well, this is a first - bailing from a camp because I hated the tent.....
mind I'll not be called a quitter - so I returned to the same spot, next night, with a more liveable sized tent.
Wild Camping Northumberland, up near Alnwick.

Fair play for you giving the tent a go, and double fair play for your honest opinion of it, wish more wild campers would do the same re: highlighting negative aspects (atleast for them), some I've seen are nothing but an extended/glorified advert for the makers. The "you're touching mesh" had me rolling 🤣🤣 (perhaps more than it should) You never fail showing your joy (or non-joy as it were, in a part of this case) at being outdoors, it's always a pleasure to watch. Lovely comment and much appreciated, thanks Dave (and Buddy the doggo). I'll always be honest about tents and stuff - like you say, there are other people out there giving biased reviews in return for free products. I love a free product, who doesn't? But if I don't like something I'll always say so and explain why. I even offered to send the tent back to Night Cat 🤣 I've had a few other tents where I've been touching mesh over the years 🙄 but nothing as severe as this one 🤣 Thanks you two, always good to hear from ya's X

If I was doing a multi-day hike I'd want a bigger shelter for overnight - a bit of space to dry stuff out, get changed and relax in after a hard day - probably battling hoards of killer midges so the mesh door might have to be zipped up etc. There's literally no space in this wee thing, no liveable space whatsoever. Nope, defo not the tent for me - I'm the same as you Simon, I've always favoured and enjoyed using a 2p tent. Have a look at a website called campingrecycled.co.uk - it's Vango's 2nd life tent page, most are refurbished and all have a 12 month warranty. I saw a couple of Hydra 200's on there recently for a good price. That Hydra is a great tent :) Unlike this Night Cat ul1 person shelter (I won't call it a tent) which was an absolute coffin - but because a lot of people got them for free to review no-one really complained about them - apart from me 😂😂

Hahaha - aye, I was raging Norman! 🤣But I'd been wise enough to choose a pitch that wasn't mega-miles in because it was my first camp with it. I'd have been frothing at the mouth if I'd had to spend the night in it. It's just not my type of tent, and my gear would have gotten wet overnight. I have other shelters of a similar weight, but they're a lot more liveable. And I'd never have the courage to tarp camp - I've got this fear of fat slugs and they always seem to scout me out and slither up the outsides of my tents. Aaargh! 😬😬 Loved the sound of rain on the tent though Norman, for me that's a priceless sound, relaxing and stress-relieving. Maybe, just maybe - if I was hiking 100 miles over 10 days in perfect conditions (I'm not as fit as you 🙄) with zero wind, no rain and the temperatures were ideal overnight so I could have a lightweight, thin bag, and if someone popped by every night with a crisp £50 note and a 10" margherita pizza and 4 beers to entice me in, then maybe I might use it. Great stuff Donna! I’ve also only bailed on a camp once - I bought a Lanshan Pro and I hated it…I spent an hour or two in the tent freaked out about my Rab sleeping bag getting soaked. Like you, it just wasn’t for me!! I felt the same as you - first impressions were so good and I wanted to love it, but I hated it!! Another KZbin-er friend bought it off me as he’s a Lanshan fan. The single skin of the Lanshan Pro was the real killer for me. As you know I now have an X-Mid 1 and again I struggle with the narrow inner - I can sleep in it but I do prefer the space of two person tents. It’s such a pleasure!! I was away again in my X-Mid 1 at the weekend, I’m not worried about my stuff getting wet and I’ve plenty of sit-up height but I miss the spaciousness in the inner…I’ve realised that I’m too attached to my X-Mid 1 to sell it though - it does serve a purpose for me when I want a really light shelter!! I may have to buy tent number 5 and get an X-Mid 2 though 😂 Glad you got your tent pleasure on night 2 😎
@donnavansenior
@donnavansenior Жыл бұрын
Woohoo!! Another person with the same issues - great to hear that Miriam, but obviously gutted that you had to bail that night lol. We only get so many camping nights on Planet Earth, so to have one cruelly snatched away by a tiny tent intent (see what I did there? 🙄) on soaking your gear is really frustrating. I love my REI bag, no chance I was gonna risk it getting wet when I was out for 2 nights. The X-Mid is a really clever design, plus you can fit your Bromptom in the 'bule, so it's ideal for your lightweight needs, but I'm a sucker for a tent with more space, which usually means a 2P version - I love the luxury of 2 doors and room to spread out my gear, or room to alter my sleeping position if there's a stray lump under the groundsheet. Only 4 tents at the moment Miriam?? Definitely plenty of room for no.5 haha. One can never have too many tents - one needs a tent for every occasion 🤣 I'm missing a stealthy coloured 2 -doored sub 1.5kg tent but I'm unsure what the answer is....the search continues. Get that X-Mid 2 bought 😁⛺💚 Looking forward to seeing your next vid X

There's no enjoyment in being couped up in a glorified bin bag liner for 12 to 15 hours if you can't move about or stash your gear. Give me a solid, warm, wind and weather proof tent any day, even if it weighs a kilo more.

The Night Cat and Lanshan 1 are the same tent - Night Cat has permission to sell it re-branded under their logo, maybe 3F UL had excess stock, or leased the design out, who knows? Once I got my rucksack in (it was an Exos 48) and my Etherlite XT with a down bag on top, that was it the tent was full to the brim 😬🤣 and that small J-door was an absolute nightmare with the trekking pole being snug up to it. Definitely not the tent for me. It's a shame because initial impressions were very favourable and the quality of the tent is really good. The Hydra is another one of Vango's bombproof budget range, I paid just over £100 for that a few years ago & it's a great tent - comes in at around 2.5kg if I remember correctly (it's not 3kg as stated on some websites), so not too bad. I'd happily carry a few extra hundred grammes for a comfortable pitch. The Mirage Pro is a powerhouse of a tent 💪 I'll defo not be using my Night Cat again, I go out to enjoy the camping experience, not endure it ;-) Cheers Jimmy

It's not the tent for me Dave, I ended up giving it away on my channel in a free draw. The lad that has it now loves using it, so that made me happy. Once I put my mat and down bag in, everything was touching the inner, it was really small and cramped in there. On the plus side it's beautifully light, well made, the stitching looked great, as did the strengthening points, but I need a tent with more liveability. Worth a try though ;)

I'm looking for lightweight summer kit but I fear I would suffer from claustrophobia in a small tent like that. Good honest review.

There are many options for lightweight kit / tents out there JT that won't have you develop curvature of the spine overnight - or soak your gear through with condensation issues. What tent do you use at the moment?

@@jtoutdoors9888 Heard nothing but good things about the Helm 2 - I almost bought one last November, and sort of wished I had. The Lanshan 2 looks loads more liveable than the 1 and it's only 225g heavier. Go fit it 😁👍

Another great video Donna and very honest review. I think honest reviews like this are incredibly useful so thank you. I’m really looking forward to the cider reviews too! I’m working my way through your back catalogue and enjoying all the Eddie Vedder - I was a grunge girl back in the day ( still am!). And my favourite sound is rain on canvas closely followed by the sound of a ferry chugging across the sea. Have a good week

I was a grunge girl back in the day as well, me and you have lots in common it seems - I had Janes Addiction playing in the garden the other night after a bit of gardening (obviously not playing live, it was just the Nothings Shocking cd 🤣). Saw Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains etc happy memories indeed and wouldn't change a moment of those times. Rain on a tent roof is a pretty nice sound as well though, and I kept my tunes off to sit and listen to it after a bit of a shitty week at work on the 2nd night in this vid. Thanks Ruth, hope your week's chugging along nicely X

I wondered if you liked JA - the name of your son Perry made me think you might! God they were all such good bands weren’t they. We’ve lost so many of them over the years though - it’s truly heartbreaking. I’m majorly impressed you saw so many of them live and I’m obviously deeply envious too! Have a good trip out this week Donna xx

@@RamblingRuth Yip - named my son after my favourite artist, Perry Farrel, dear me he was easy on the eye back in the early 90's! Saw JA many times, hitched all over back in those days. Don't gig as much these days but I've got a ticket for Siouxsie in July and going by KZbin footage she's still got it 😁 Xx

Honesty is the best policy Donna. Some tents are not for everyone. Shame, you looked well frustrated, pmsl “leave no trace, wish I could leave the tent” 🤣🤣🤣🤣, if anyone knows what makes a good tent it’s you, love how you popped down to van, and pulled another tent out👌, nowt stops you getting out, love it, atb Mick 👍

I thought I'd love this tent - yeah, I knew it was a 1P shelter, but I didn't realise how space compromised it got once I hoyed my gear in. The video shows it warts and all - it was cramped as anything & I could never see a time where I'd be getting all excited about packing my Night Cat for a trip away - I'd rather sleep rough in a pile of nettles with slugs crawling over my face than have to endure a night in a mesh coffin. On the plus side it's very well made, stitching was spot on and the stress points seemed solid ;-) Cheers Mick :)

Ah Stu - what a disappointment that Night Cat was! A tent fit for an Action Man lol, definitely not a shelter I'd enjoy using, as soon as I'd got my gear in I realised how small it was. I never thought I'd see me bail because I hated the tent, but on this occasion I'm pleased I did - my gear would have been wet through next morning.

@Donna Van Senior - Wild Camping you hit the nail on the head when you said it wasn't worth risking a £300 sleeping bag for a £100 tent. I've seen alot of other youtubers review nightcat tents and most say the same, too small. I was asked to review the 2 person tent but said no due to it being far too small. I'm still favouring my cloud peak 2.

@@stuoutdoors1961 All the reviews I've seen have praised the tent (Night Cat 1) and tbh I couldn't understand why, unless they were just saying that in the hope of getting more free products. Was it the old version 2p tent they offered you? 2.5kg? They've got a newer lightweight 2p tent out now but I doubt I'd get offered one 😂😂 I loved my Cloud Peak 2, I used to call it my 'Hildaberg' because it was the closest I'd ever get to an Allak lol, it kept me safe on many a mad camp over the couple of years I owned it, only downsides for me were the fact it was a cold tent in winter and a noisy tent in winds.
@stuoutdoors1961
@stuoutdoors1961 Жыл бұрын
@Donna Van Senior - Wild Camping it was the older 2p tent, I just thought it looked too cheaply made and lacked features/engineering. I completely agree with you about the cloud peak, it is a noisy tent in the wind and definitely only a 3 season tent, but I think it's a good tent for the money, can't say the same about the nightcat, I call hillebergs "hiltonbergs" for the same reasons, bomb proof tents with a price tag to match. My zephyros 1 is a very small tent but well made so I can forgive it.

Yes, you're right in theory, but a tent can be loathed if it does not do the job you expected, and you have to pack up and head an hour back down the hill, when you were really looking forward to having a wild camp that night...
