Track list: "The Night The Light Went On In Long Beach", recorded live in Long Beach, CA on May 12, 1974. (1st release, late May 1974 - shortly after the show! This 1st issue accidentally used a "rough mix" tape. While this mix more closely matches the concert song versions, the sound is muffled and wasn't "polished" in the studio. (See the remaster years later...) Reissued in 1975 with same mix. Reissued again in 1985. Remastered/reissued in 1998 with "proper" mix - with different edits, some vocal volume changes and even reverb added. This mix is highly compressed and Bev's drums are overly pushed up in the mix. This "The Lost Beach Remix" attempts to balance the edits, the original sound and makes some minor sonic corrections from the original and remastered mix, and with elements given to The Lost Planet several years ago that gave insight to the flat unequalized mix from that night.) Intro 0:12 Daybreaker 01:30 Showdown 05:32 Daytripper 13:55 10538 Overture 20:35 Mik's Solo/Orange Blossom Special 25:56 In The Hall Of The Mountain King 28:12 Great Balls Of Fire 33:46 Roll Over Beethoven 36:54

Thank you love the raw unpolished sound of early elo. Excellent music from my favorite band.

And this mix is amazing. Much better than the original vinyl. And they cut so much out of ..Mountain King on the record obviously.. I’m blown away. This band totally rock !!

Daybreaker is such an awesome concert opener. Before Bev departed ELO Part Two, I heard them open with this in Cumming, GA. Great mix here, they were a great band!

I hear a lot of “Do Ya” in that guitar solo in 10538 Overture.

Yes, they mixed them together. It really should be 10538 Overture/Do Ya.

Thanks so much for putting this up. I remember being excited beyond words to discover this vinyl lp in my teens (around 1980). This shows off what I consider to be the real ELO! One little question.. does anyone know if they were using a guitarist behind the scenes at this gig like they did with the OOTB tour? In Daytripper there’s one place where I’ve always thought it suggests this (or else an overdub later). It’s at 18’ 03”.. there’s an electric guitar chord riff but also what sounds like sound high electric guitar notes going on behind this. Always been intrigued and felt like the only one who heard things like thjs. If you’re reading this, all the best to you.. you have taste!

I think the remastered version also cut out a lot of the extended jam after "Showdown", which is a shame because I think that section really is the best example of ELO as a live ensemble.

Greetings Dylan! Yes, this recording was messed with too much over the years. Maybe some day we will actually get a good proper release. Many love the "remaster", but it has more edits and "stuff" added after the show. ELO had a quirky raw live sound back then - mostly because they were finding their way - and the microphones for the strings weren't the best. But that's what made it fun. Jeff didn't like it because he's a perfectionist and couldn't control the sound as much.

@@lostplanetradio I much prefer this over the remaster. Thank you so much.

It has been brought to my attention that the "remastered" CD version not only adds reverb, but full blown extra echo in post production in places. I had forgotten that. Listen to "Showdown" on the remastered CD mix. It is slathered in added echo/reverb. That was either done in post production or for the remaster. It's hard to get the details on that. It's argued to be "what the release should have been", but was it THAT different from the actual show - with extra edits, reverb and echoing added afterwards? Did Jeff really want it to sound that way? "Showdown" did not have all the extra echo in the studio version - which is the sound he always tried to recreate live. In this respect, the original LP - as bad it sounded - is more true to how the concert sounded live. The mix and EQ were off - which was simply why it was "the wrong tape to use". This mix did use that remaster as a reference, but Bev's drums were so overly boosted and the added edits and other weird sounds/over compression, made it hard to pick out sonic differences and if any instruments should be level changed in the mix. The added reverb/echo also made it sound less "authentic" to the concert sound. Some LOVE that remaster, as it was touted to be "the best the show could sound". To each their own. If you love Bev's drums bashing and rattling in your ears at compression-set-to-stun levels, then it does sound good.
