In Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. describes the nightmare of total equality, a society in which equality is finally achieved, but at the cost of freedom and individuality. One’s utopia is another’s dystopia.
We’ll be exploring the increasing promotion of equality to the point of it being absurd as a consequence of the “unheard cry for meaning” that plagues modern society. The modern age is characterised by a sense of disorientation of not knowing what to do with one’s life. Nietzsche’s foresaw nihilism as an inevitable consequence of the Death of God, where God is replaced with public opinion, the entertainment culture, and the State. Without objective values, we fall into relativism, making us fall prey to authoritarianism and conformism, as displayed by George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984.

Its all about capital allocation and negotiating power (be it luck, be it connections, be it a bit of hard work too). This video is useful as a warning against totalitarian control but will be justified to maintain the current acceleration of income gap. As almost a "some people are tall, some people are short" argument. I don't know about you but I haven't seen anybody who is 1000 times taller or more talented than any other individual. People in current generations have almost given up on ever owning a house lest they inherit it. Adjusting for inflation the minimum wage was higher in the 1960s than is now. @Stroggoii
@Stroggoii 2 жыл бұрын
@@rugbyguy59 Yes, Bergeron the evil right wing parody took absolute power from an absurdly frail social structure as soon as he got the chance. What did Stalin do with Trotski's invitation to Lenin's funeral? Socialism is science fiction. It will be cooperative capitalism what takes us to the next level of societal organization. The left will call it "democratic socialism" but it will be private profit motive that funds UBI, commonwealth funds and renewable energy for the purpose of sustaining consumption in a post-labor world.
@rugbyguy59
@rugbyguy59 2 жыл бұрын
@Stroggoii Yes, the right wing character is parodied as well. But the primary parody is the Cold War propaganda view of equality to hide the real ideas of socialism. Perhaps it will be cooperative capitalism but the profit motive will have to be directed to the areas of society’s needs not pure private interests. There are a variety of issues with the theory. But if you can fulfill the needed goals of allowing all people to live a decent standard of life while keeping the total economy within the natural limits of the planet (something capitalism has so far completely failed at) then I’ll support it. Frankly it sounds close to market socialism which might provide what is needed through democratizing the economy. Personally I think we need a wide range of methods... and it’s needed quickly. The market is currently failing to address a great many issues as it is. Stalin likely didn’t do anything with Trotsky’s invite. He did claim years later to have tricked Trotsky but the evidence just as easily supports other reasons such as Trotsky’s own arrogance. Not sure what that point was about other than whataboutism I guess. So when are you starting your cooperative capitalism movement. Looks to me like the neoliberals are quite well ensconced and the most likely alternative if a decent into fascism

I spent 7 years of my life in the Tennessee State prison system and I can tell you that's the end result of "let's make everyone equal". Everyone was pretty much in the same clothes, had the same possessions, same manner of housing, ate the same food, got paid about the same amount of money from jobs that ranged from busywork to brutal (the pay was .17 and hour up to .54 an hour). The only way to "get ahead" was through illegal activities or violence, and the people running the show (the guards can be stand ins for government) got to do pretty much whatever they liked and were paid much more. It's not a perfect 1:1 but it's close.

Went through the same in Texas. Only difference was we didn't get paid anything for our labor. The guards were mostly from Nigeria and were paid very little. We were treated like absolute garbage regardless of race, sexual orientation, etc. You couldn't go to the bathroom without asking permission. If the guards were in a bad mood, they could punish you through commissary restrictions. No air conditioning or heaters during the Winter or brutal Texas Summer heat. Immanent equality, when transformed into an act, naturally shows the differences. The equality of external conditions to the potential of each individual is fair because it creates the trusts so that the immanent trusts are placed on the same level to develop. This is quite different from forcefully imposing a lower measure on everyone.
@117Industries
@117Industries 2 жыл бұрын
But those conditions are perhaps in part a product of those natural inequalities of the individual. And separating the two as if any imbalance of material circumstance were an expression of a flawed system might simply lead to levelling individual expression. But I presume that’s the aim. You can say that material prosperity of birth can’t be the result of that individual’s self-expression (rather their parents/ guardians), but who are we to divert the fruits of that material prosperity elsewhere, and to whom do we allocate it and under what justification? Although extreme nepotism can promote decadence and complacency in the silver-spooned, it’s a flawed attempt to constrain resources towards those whose traits better enable them to maximise its utility. At least the prevailing assumption is that if the parents had desirable traits (such as virtue, IQ, wisdom, etc.) then it’s reasonable that the children will inherit these traits and be suitably equipped to productively use (and perhaps even multiply) their parents’ resources. Nepotism doesn’t seem to work well in practice of course, but the problem here is the heritability of certain desirable traits, not the distribution of material prosperity among those whose self-expression of their traits (presumably virtuous) bore it through their labour. So the question should be: what are the set of traits which better enable someone to independently acquire resources and to use them wisely and productively? And when we can identify such individuals, at birth or in childhood, we now have a model for the allocation of resources: be them educational, financial, or whatever. Until then, attacking the relative privileges and advantages of some does nothing to solve the actual problem, which is that those who are deserving occasionally miss out on opportunities which they’d have otherwise put to good use. The questions we then must ask are: who are the deserving, and how do we compensate for their disadvantage?

"...simply an eradication of discrimination..." Not really. Politicians cultivate and feed various victim groups in order to harvest votes and increase their power. They couldn't give a fuck less about eradicating discrimination because they are ardent practitioners of bigotry themselves-the belief that they are the rulers and we are the ruled. People should be free to discriminate however they choose. I'm not saying people should be free to hurt anyone without consequence, just that discrimination is a thought process, and no one has any business policing anyone else's thoughts. The over-emphasis on ending discrimination is the thing that ends up keeping people from getting on with their lives because they're being told they can't get or do what they want because of discrimination. So instead of acting in spite of any real or imagined discrimination, they focus on the discrimination. This is very disempowering and victim-minded and exactly where those in power want them to stay.

But "the eradication of discrimination," should not be understood as controlling what people think. If you think in racist terms, then you ought to be free to think in racist terms. I think people are too eager to be justice warriors that we don't stop to think how our actions have consequences that would eventually result in more, undesired problems. It is the result of thinking with your heart and not your head. Okay, so you've coerced everyone into not being a racist by force (laws). No can even have racist thoughts. What's next? You're going to coerce everyone that doesn't like purple into liking purple? You may think you are on the right side of the argument here, but if we truly followed what you are advocating into the more extreme cases, you would ironically end up inevitably with another kind of totalitarian form of rule. If your "diverse" opinion is, for example an unfounded and provably false claim, such as "x race of homo sapien is inferior to x race" or "homosexuality is unnatural" then maybe its not totalitarian to not lend a platform to it. Not lending a platform to it is also not the same as suppression by force. Maybe such "diversity" should not be tolerated, not only because it is false, but because its premise presupposes the oppression/suppression of immutable traits, they can and have been used to crush free expression of those in a collective society. In other words, such opinions have no place in a society. Is it really so radical to suggest you don't have the right to harm others with your personal bullshit?

If people collectively and democratically shut you down because your premise impedes on diversity and inclusion. It may not seem diverse because most are in agreement, but in my example, their (the person being shut down, canceled, whatever you want to call it) premise would be anti diverse in a way. Sure its different from the majority opinion, so by that definition sure its "diverse" but it is touted to promote the exclusion and denial of the rights and existence of other people. But again being deplatformed and actually not having the rights to say something are two different issues. Just because you should have the right to say whatever you want doesn't exactly mean you should be able to project through a microphone

@@kylekns8924 The more we spend time interacting with algorithms that keep showing us what we already want to see, the more radicalized one can be to potentially freedom limiting ideologies. I don't believe its possible to argue anymore that there is a free marketplace of ideas and that the good ideas beat out the bad just by nature of the "goodness" or the "effectiveness" (competitive advantage) of ideas. In a way it can be a lot easier and more comforting to believe in nonsense. Here's where it gets interesting. What do you believe about truth? When something is understood to be a stable theory and have a general concensus amongst the scientific community like climate change, the effects of pollution, homosexuality, the lack of difference between races, its hard to agree for the people that deny robust theories backed by enormous and repeatable evidence that these are even "opinions" anymore. Sure people hold these false beliefs for whatever reasons. You're entitled to opinions and a free society should never deny you that, but you are not entitled to your own "alternative facts". TONS of people wanted to believe all sorts of nonsense during this pandemic and ended up paying with their lives for it. So this misinformation was literally killing people, sure they choose not to become vaccinated, they choose to go to the store even knowing they tested positive, these are all exercises of freedom in an individual sense, but many got themselves and others hurt or killed. Whether they believed vaccines were harmful, or they didn't even think there was a virus, it didn't change that there WAS a virus nor did it change the effectiveness of preparing your immune system for coming in contact with it. Same with climate, you can choose to have the opinion that its not real, that a God is in control of the world, and that man has no impact on Earth's balance but it doesn't change the fact that taking billions of tons of fossilized Flora and Fauna out of the ground and burning it will inevitably start to mess with the delicate balance that much of life depends on. Or even more human wise, that one race being superior to another when in fact we are the same animal. This kind of opinion can drive people to strive for power and control over one another. To suppress/oppress other groups of humans based on provably false beliefs that can be literally demonstrated to be based on lousy or completely made up observations. To allow it seems like it generally takes away from freedom. 1 in 10 children died before their first birthday of preventable disease before mass immunization efforts thats just true, opinions don't change the nature of reality. What good is freedom for the individual if your opinion (which was influenced by false beliefs) got you killed? What good is freedom for the individual, if biodiversity (possible medicines, food, materials.) is diminished? Where people die early from toxic air and water, or from worsening weather events, or from a climate not safe to be outside (equatorial regions). What good is freedom for the individual if racist fascists hold power and start executing or enslaving all non Arayans?

Wealth inequality is irrelevant. The most inequal country in the world is actually the Netherlands where the heiress to the East India Company and plenty reserved aristocrats live among an average population that's rich by world standards. Income inequality needs to be addressed not by taking away the wealth of the superlative, but by eliminating mindless labor and forcing more people into real value production by deregulating entrepreneurship and subsidizing self-employment. People like Musk and Bezos don't own billions of instances of labor units, that's not what post-fiat money is. They own bonds of trust in the loan shark market, items that are in themselves worthless and lose value when sold. You too could have owned these bonds if you had spared a couple beers back when Amazon shares were worth $20. The 3% wealthiest have also contributed, on average, $2.7T of the $3.5T yearly revenue this running century. If you don't see it reflected in social programs and infrastructure it's time to start asking the first-gen millionaires in Washington where that money is instead of clapping at them like trained seals when they talk about stealing even more from "the rich". Because in populist politics, "the other" always ends up meaning "you" in the end.

I think about this all the time! Everytime I talk to someone about this, however, they tune me out or have nothing to contribute, or are not willing to engage in a debate. So I just keep these thoughts to myself. They are not helpful to have in a society/system that is designed to keep you constantly running, constantly entertained, constantly chasing the carrot ahead of you, dangling from a stick. Some have accepted that as the reality in which they are expected to operate, albeit reluctantly, and others actually like it. I fit into neither camp. I think human life can be more. I think human life can be true. I think human life doesn't have t revolve around materialism, or power, or anything of the sort. I think such things as power should be something which is earned by the meritorious, not an object to be won by anybody. I admit I am not fit to lead, and therefore that power does not correspond to me. We need that responsibility of thought in people. For people to know their limits. Society needs balance. Nothing more. What contributes to balance, harmony, and stability at the micro and macro level, that is objective truth.

Are both as binary as we are arguing nowadays, or is, there a possibility of an organically derived middle ground? If the variables in the context are mixed up, the calculations will be skewed from the start, so the answer is always questionable.

The most charitable characterization of each side is that equity proponents believe more opportunities need to be given to the disadvantaged, and their opponents believe that inequity is somewhat natural and more extreme measures to enforce equity will do more harm than good. Not everyone deserves such a charitable description though. There are clearly people who instinctively seek to tear down high-achievers to make themselves feel better, and others who think that the less fortunate are almost wholly to blame for their own suffering.

You can clearly see this in first world nations, when people reach such a high level of comfort, their lives become dull and boring so they begin to complain about vapid nonsense to pat themselves in the back about how righteous and morally superior they are. ie: wokism.

First off, believing Hobbes and his theories isn't exactly the best way to delve into deeper philosophy. His concept of human nature is shoddy at best, and was disproved by both Locke and Rousseau, plus any examination of anthropology, especially primatology. Second, anthropology and history also disprove your ethnocentrism towards the modern technological milieu. Humans have always lived into their 70s. However, only now are cancers and lifestyle diseases a problem, and only now are mental health issues at such a high mark, and only now are man-made creations capable of wiping out the entire species, and only now is the biggest killer of humanity each year things that are necessary to survive (car accidents). Life is as dangerous and unfulfilling now as it has ever been. Freedom is restricted by every measure compared to 100 years ago, and suicide is at a tremendously high rate. You may get to avoid all illness and prolong your life, but is it really worth it? This mode of thinking is a prime example of Nietzsche's Last Men. Sacrificing all greatness for comfort. At this point, you're sacrificing happiness as well.

@@andrewbowen2837 You need to brush up on your philosophy. Locke's state of "War" is almost identical to Hobbes' state of nature. Also, go to any professor of Political Philosophy and they will inform you that Locke is considered the hack and not Hobbes. I might also advise you to study the German philosopher Schopenhauer or read Dawkin's book, "The Selfish Gene." They concur with Hobbes' basic premise. Locke's greatest contribution is the notion that "we do 1not need to run into the den of the lion to escape the fox," or words to that effect. Have a good day and happy reading

While many may think of political and governmental agents when considering the onset of equality, it is very important to note that in our post - industrial liberal democratic societies, technological powers may actually play a bigger role. This was something that Ernst Junger noted frequently. He remarked how technology had a sort of leveling effect, in that it sort of equalizes all social classes. This is because technology offers a common denominator that people have to play by. As technology becomes more accessible, the poor and the rich must use the same network, the same phone companies, and they post on the same social media platforms. The potential of technology cannot be underestimated. It was the power of technology to spread quickly that to many households, giving birth to so called mass politics. Through the newspaper, then the radio then the television. And this has helped many societies become equal, at the cost of culture and art, for to make all things the same, uniqueness is sacrificed. Now combined with neoliberalism, farmers from third world countries are working in these monotone office buildings just as their first world counterparts. Today, if you were to go to Japan for example, or other “Westernized” Asian countries, the architecture, fashion and overall culture has been leveled out and thus very similar to their North American counterpart. The unique culture of countries across the world has been leveled out, thanks to technology, and the unrestricted spread of capital.

@@Barklord Market's don't reward merit or virtue because the former is insignificant in the face of the final results, and the latter doesn't exist. Markets reward value, and value is a subjective variable that is decided on an individual basis. The picture of your mom on your desk is far more valuable to you than me. What you are propagating is the obsolete economic theorem known as The Labor Theory of Value, which was started by Karl Marx; a philosopher who purposefully avoided educating himself on economic processes, because he saw fields that required empirical proof as "bourgeoise propaganda", due to the aforementioned proof inevitably contradicting his wild assertions. Marx believed that merit produced income, and that there was a surplus of value being taken in any transaction. As I said, the man wasn't an economist and his beliefs are still laughed at today whenever a couple of economists are drunk and need to point fingers and tease somebody (I guess Marx receives equal treatment in both life and death lol). By Marx's logic, a man could waste his day away digging a hole in his backyard in searing heat, then make a claim to millions because he "worked hard"; even though him digging that hole produced nothing of value. But that's not how things work, because no one gives a fuck about how hard you work; it's about the value you produced that someone, somewhere out there, is willing to pay for. If I walk up to you and say "I just worked 12 hours" and demand payment you're going to look at me like wtf? But if I walk up to you with a hyper-advanced phone I designed and demand payment, you'll be more likely to converse over the transaction because you see *VALUE* that compels you to go through with it; *REGARDLESS* of how hard I worked to produce that value. Hell, I could have been drunk with one hand masturbating when I made the phone and it literally does not matter; the point is that the value exists and you are willing to trade for it.

@KevinJohnson-cv2no 2 жыл бұрын
@@Barklord Nothing you said empirically disproves my statements lol, you are just reiterating your initial posits from your OP; which I already debunked in mine. Hence, I'll just focus on your analogy. As I said, value is a subjective variable decided on an individual basis. The reason the sex worker gets more money from the rich guy is because the handjob is more valuable to him in relation to the cost, hence he sees it fit to pay more. In the eyes of the rich man, the sex worker creates more value than she does in the eyes of the poor man, hence why the poor man is unwilling to transact. And yes, I did create more value if I sell my stadium/football club for $700M, hence why the transaction happened in the first place; why would someone spend $700M on something they don't see equivalent value in. In the eyes of the buyer, the value created by the stadium is indeed worth $700M, hence why he goes along with the transaction in the first place. If he saw less value than the cost, he would not transact. It really is quite simply mate lol. Also, it depends on what you mean by meritocracy. Capitalism isn't a meritocracy if one defines merit by effort, because no one gives a fuck about that kind of merit; participation trophies are for losers and children. Capitalism *IS,* however, a meritocracy if one defines merit by results. It's just that the majority of average joe's have no "results" to offer except flipping burgers and packing groceries, so instead they seethe at the system in a powerless anger until they die just as insignificantly as they've always lived. And so the tale goes.

@@Barklord People who sell homes have higher incomes for two primary reasons: the first is that the carpenters typically have more consistent incomes, without dips when the market tanks, because people will always need repairs and maintenance; while realtors rely entirely on the market. The second reason is convenience. This comes in many forms, including that many people don't have the time or lack the patience to wait for a new house to be built. So you can charge more for a completed structure than it cost to build the thing. Additionally, once a house has been built on a piece of land, you can't build a new house without tearing that one down. So with zoning and other laws making it difficult to just plop down a house, and needing to be close to transport and utilities, people will prefer to buy an existing home if they can. All of this, and more, explains the difference in income between carpenters and realtors.

It’s sad to see people so easily just adopt viewpoints so easily when it’s presented in a manner that seems correct. The video essentially lays out a dystopian worst case scenario type of thing where people reach some sort of absolute equality and extrapolates from there. But this idea that modern societies are moving to a state of absolute equality just isn’t true and it is in fact impossible. Modern societies are trying to develop equal opportunity and accessibility to the masses. What is done with this opportunity is up to the individual and the life’s circumstances. If you make sense of the time in history we are now, you can see that we are beginning to understand the importance and societal benefits of this concept and it is what is driving this shift. But the outlandish belief that the world is slowly descending into total equality and the individual will no longer exist is simply an idea based on a false pretense. And more importantly, it is an idea, that will be used in modern society, as a tool to impede the improvements that equal opportunity provides. Essentially, this misalignment of what is actually occurring will develop beliefs that will push people to mistakenly attempt to move society backwards. But all in all, the attempts to fix modern society’s push to “total equality” will fail particularly because the actual push is to a state of equal opportunity.
