I was working at GameStop when the 2DS came out. A co-worker and I were talking about it and wondering why Nintendo would make a system like this. A customer overheard us and mentioned that she worked with mentally disabled people, and that this version was less likely to break if dropped/ thrown than the 3DS’s clamshell design. We hadn’t thought of that angle.

Probably one of the greatest gaming deals of all time. For $79, PLUS Mario Kart 7 included, AND included the AC adapter (hilarious that New 3DS XL would NOT come with one). You could buy 2 brand new systems for multiplayer/family if you were on a budget and got a ton of value in return. Also cool that you could use them as controllers for Smash Wii U. And the amiibo NFC reader was only $15-$19. Insane what those things go for now!

Plus for like another $30, if wanted to jailbreak it, you could get a sd card and a copy of Brain Age off the e-shop (you could get any game off the e-shop for the jailbreak to work, Brain Age was just the cheapest at like $1) and all of a sudden you have a pretty sweet emulation console on the go. Beat buying whatever handful of roms Nintendo had available on the e-shop at $5-$10 a pop when I was a kid obsessed with retro gaming.

No moving parts, no clam-shell, and incredible balance/center of gravity will do that. Aside from a horribly squishy d-pad that makes playing rhythm games nigh-impossible, 2DS is an incredibly ergonomic, and sturdy machine. I love my Switch Lite for the same reasons. If only the Switch Lite were lighter-weight and thinner...

When I worked at a local video game store parents bought this for their kids to no end. Especially when it was bundled with Mario Kart 7. It was a cheap model, it came with a game, and it played the games their kids wanted. Done. It was a big birthday, or Christmas mover. We maybe hardcore gamers today, but remember it was others that got us reasonably priced handhelds when we were young. (Looking at my game boy pocket). Side note: Saw way too many broken hinges on DS and 3DS when kids tried to trade them in. I had to be blunt and tell them no, or little to nothing, because no one wants to play with a broken handheld. Parents used it as a teaching moment for their kids to remind them that is why they need to take better care of their stuff.

People were being too harsh on the 2DS, it was overall better for kids and parents who don’t want the 3D effect nor the foldable display. I actually preferred it to the 3DS, because of its durability and if you had young kids that played with your game systems, I was more lenient about it. The kids were watching KZbin on the 2DS and playing lot of multiplayer games like Mario Kart!

Yeah, I remember one time my brother woke me up because he was playing with the sound app on the 3ds, so I took it away from him so I could go back to sleep, but because I was tired I accidently dropped it and it popped into 2 where the hinge was. The interesting things about that is that there was still a cable connecting the screens, so it still worked for like a week or so after that happened but it was annoying to play with like that and it did eventually stop working. Regardless of any of that the lack of hinge increases durability and when you have a lot of siblings sharing a console that's a huge plus, especially since most of have autism and adhd so we tend to leave weird place or drop it in accident. Case in point I have left my phone in the fridge in accident on multiple occasions so you know I'm a hot mess 😂

@@marymurphy1429 I’ve always hated hinges in mobile devices, because of their design flaws of wires being attached and connected to the screen. Having a unibody design, makes it reliable for families! Also I mostly plugged in headphones for music or anything loud in the games. My 2DS which was not only used for games, it was also used for photos and KZbin, which those apps we used by kids as their multimedia device, before they were old enough to get their first cell phone!

I was 32 when the 2DS came out, & about 6 months afterwards I saw some pop up on Nintendo's eBay store for 60 bucks, so I snatched up a red/black version, and it was perfect for my work breaks, and when I had to travel for work, as it was cheap enough to chuck in my bag, and if something happened to it, I was not out much money, and with a cheap aftermarket battery upgrade it almost doubled the runtime. So yeah it was also great not just for kids, but people who did not want to spend a lot of money on something like a PSVita, and the expensive memory cards.

Reasons I like my 2DS despite owning a New 3DSXL: 1) Slab design feels less finicky/fragile. 2) Lighter and easier to support. 3) Large L and R Buttons. 4) More traditional mushy buttons. 5) Matte finish.

This. Non-clamshell meant no moving parts, nothing to wiggle around, and a consistent/un-moving center of gravity (as opposed to constantly shifting slight amounts) that was centered over all of your fingers and your palms. The clamshell systems cause the center of gravity to shift out away from your grip, thus requiring more grip force from your fingers to hold onto/hope it doesn't get bumped into when you're out and about/hope you don't lose grip when adjusting your hands to reach something/take a slight break. The shoulder buttons are contoured, too, which is super comfortable to just rest your fingers in. I love low-force buttons, and rubber dome generally does that better than tact switches (clicky switches), but, actually, the 2DS is *too* squishy, IMO. Action buttons are okay, but the D-pad is so dang squishy, I can't feel it at all. Playing Lego Rockband is practically impossible, and the only reason I'm able to play it at all is because I'm absolutely destroying each input, to make sure I can feel my thumb impacting the system - otherwise it's just marshmallows and nerf, and it messes up my rhythm. Pretty sure the inside of all 3DS systems are matte, too. I know the shell of my blue 3DS XL is a metallic-matte, too.

honestly my favorite thing about this console variant is that it's flat and doesn't have the ribbon flexi cables threaded in the hinge making it so much easier to service if you need to. it's obviously not as easy to take apart as a gameboy or something but because it's all just a flat square it's so much more accessible to home repair if needed. The price point too now just makes it so much easier to get a hold of since other 3ds models have gone up so much in price on the secondhand market. I remember thinking the design was a bit stupid looking back when it released, but now i've grown quite fond of it.

My kids all got a 2DS when I had my 3DSXL. We had so much fun playing games together and I can’t deny that the button layout on the 2DS is more comfortable than having all the buttons on the bottom screen of the 3DS. They’ve moved on to the switch, but the DS line will always just be awesome to me.

I can do without the chastising of the product name at the beginning, though. The guy is talking out of his ass. DS never officially stood for "Dual Screen" - because it was also said to stand for "Developers' System", by Nintendo themselves. Also, 3DS is a mashup, not an acronym - it's "3D", and "DS". In the same way that SEGA isn't an acronym - it's a mashup and contraction of "Service" and "Games". So "2DS" isn't hard to figure out - it's just "2D" and "DS".

What was even more crazy about the 2DS was Nintendo had an eBay store at the time, & if you caught it just right a refurbished 2DS unit(no different from new beside the box) with the AC Adapter, & 4GB SD card could be had for 60 bucks which was an insane value, & that's I got one getting me into the 3DS/2DS ecosystem, then with a cheap battery upgrade you could almost double the battery life of it, it was such a great little system to chuck in my bag when I traveled for work at the time.

The new 2DS XL really was the worst console of the entire lineup. It had neither the appeal of the 2DS (cheap, sturdy) nor the appeal of a 3DS (3D). Sure, you might say that 3D was a gimmick, but weren't the "new" additions even more of a gimmick? The only worthwhile feature the new 3DS added was face tracking for 3D, which is useless on a 2D screen.

Tbh, I didn't think I'd ever buy a 2DS. I already had a 3DS for a while, and later upgraded to the XL model. Then, last year, I saw one at a yard sale for $5. Picked it up, homebrewed it, and I still love using it to this day. It's so comfy in my hands and works just as well as my 3DS XL. Just with smaller screens and no hinge or 3D slider.

The 2DS was my FIRST DS system! Which is crazy, I know, but I was out of Nintendo-related gaming for most of the post-Wii period (until the Switch). My sister came home with a 2DS of her own that she got on a boxing day sale - $90 Canadian. Being just after Christmas, my cheap ass was hesitant to spend even that on a system I wasn't sure about... But it CAME WITH MARIO KART 7! I was sold. Then I got into Pokemon again, then Samus Returns came out, and man... I have great memories of those first few years on the 3DS "family of systems". Upgraded to the Zelda 3DS, and then the Samus Returns one... I mean... I'm not made of stone, and it's my favourite gaming franchise... And I know I'll be keeping that system until I'm cold in the ground!

Scott got that refurb 2DS when the Nintendo Online store was clearing them out, like I did and I also got a blue stylus. I called about it and they said red stylus ran out first, and all that were left were blue and brown. Also, another positive for 2DS is from that single pane screen underneath. The only DS model with identical color temp, contrast, etc across both screens exactly because they're not two different screens.

In like 2019, I wanted a 3DS for my birthday. The 2DS was however cheaper and I didn't really care about the 3D gimmick on the 3DS, so I decided to instead get that (funnily enough the same model you show in this video) and New Super Mario Bros 2. I should've gotten the 3DS really but I didn't care, since all I really cared about was wanting to play 3DS games. I can see why some people didn't like it back then though. Also was a terrible door stopper. I still have it today, albeit in not good but still usable and can still play games albeit digital only games because the game cart slot doesn't work anymore condition.

The 2ds had a lot going for it. Besides the fact it was cheaper it was also incredibly durable compared to the clamshell consoles with fragile hinges that always seemed to break on Nintendo consoles even if you were careful. Even after I got a 3DS- I almost never used the 3D mode and I doubt many others did either. It was also genius in that Nintendo (at least in their portable consoles) have huge libraries - it makes sense to sell a dirt cheap stripped down console, it will sell more games.

2DS has personally saved my ass. When the OG 3DS XL was released, my family ended up gifting me one that year for Christmas. I LOVED that thing, and one terrible day years later... it broke. Even though I took great care of it, I turned it on to enjoy some gaming, and half of the screen was completely blacked out. I was devasted - and I was also broke. It was then that my best friend suggested the 2DS. It was way cheaper, and was a special Mario Bros. edition! I snapped that shit up, and returned to my games with joy. I used it for quite a while, until my cousin gave me his old 3DS XL. The 2DS still gets used regularly, because it has other games that my 3DS doesn't have. Great system!

(she had a 2DS as well!! hers was the one that came with super mario bros.) i have friends with 3DSs that are kind of baffled whenever i tell them about my 2DS, but honestly i think its kind of cute?? i may just be more attached to mine because of the memories i had with it, though. i remember in summer 2019 i accidentally left it at my grandparents’ house in croatia, and in 2022 when i went back it kinda felt like meeting an old friend again. of course youtube had shut down for the 2DS by that point, but there were still other games on it, and then after i got back to america i bought more games for it, most notably tomodachi life. because of how much i like the 2DS, i really wanna mod mine, especially with the fact that all the servers for everything are down, but im really worried about messing up and accidentally bricking it 😭

Man I fell in love with that thing. So many nights in bed playing MK7, Mario 3D Land and random indie titles that punched above their weight. Caused me to end up buying the SNES-themed N3DSXL about a year later, which is now one of my most prized consoles. The 3DS was a great platform.
