When I worked at a local video game store parents bought this for their kids to no end. Especially when it was bundled with Mario Kart 7. It was a cheap model, it came with a game, and it played the games their kids wanted. Done. It was a big birthday, or Christmas mover. We maybe hardcore gamers today, but remember it was others that got us reasonably priced handhelds when we were young. (Looking at my game boy pocket). Side note: Saw way too many broken hinges on DS and 3DS when kids tried to trade them in. I had to be blunt and tell them no, or little to nothing, because no one wants to play with a broken handheld. Parents used it as a teaching moment for their kids to remind them that is why they need to take better care of their stuff.

Yeah, I remember one time my brother woke me up because he was playing with the sound app on the 3ds, so I took it away from him so I could go back to sleep, but because I was tired I accidently dropped it and it popped into 2 where the hinge was. The interesting things about that is that there was still a cable connecting the screens, so it still worked for like a week or so after that happened but it was annoying to play with like that and it did eventually stop working. Regardless of any of that the lack of hinge increases durability and when you have a lot of siblings sharing a console that's a huge plus, especially since most of have autism and adhd so we tend to leave weird place or drop it in accident. Case in point I have left my phone in the fridge in accident on multiple occasions so you know I'm a hot mess 😂

This. Non-clamshell meant no moving parts, nothing to wiggle around, and a consistent/un-moving center of gravity (as opposed to constantly shifting slight amounts) that was centered over all of your fingers and your palms. The clamshell systems cause the center of gravity to shift out away from your grip, thus requiring more grip force from your fingers to hold onto/hope it doesn't get bumped into when you're out and about/hope you don't lose grip when adjusting your hands to reach something/take a slight break. The shoulder buttons are contoured, too, which is super comfortable to just rest your fingers in. I love low-force buttons, and rubber dome generally does that better than tact switches (clicky switches), but, actually, the 2DS is *too* squishy, IMO. Action buttons are okay, but the D-pad is so dang squishy, I can't feel it at all. Playing Lego Rockband is practically impossible, and the only reason I'm able to play it at all is because I'm absolutely destroying each input, to make sure I can feel my thumb impacting the system - otherwise it's just marshmallows and nerf, and it messes up my rhythm. Pretty sure the inside of all 3DS systems are matte, too. I know the shell of my blue 3DS XL is a metallic-matte, too.

I can do without the chastising of the product name at the beginning, though. The guy is talking out of his ass. DS never officially stood for "Dual Screen" - because it was also said to stand for "Developers' System", by Nintendo themselves. Also, 3DS is a mashup, not an acronym - it's "3D", and "DS". In the same way that SEGA isn't an acronym - it's a mashup and contraction of "Service" and "Games". So "2DS" isn't hard to figure out - it's just "2D" and "DS".

honestly my favorite thing about this console variant is that it's flat and doesn't have the ribbon flexi cables threaded in the hinge making it so much easier to service if you need to. it's obviously not as easy to take apart as a gameboy or something but because it's all just a flat square it's so much more accessible to home repair if needed. The price point too now just makes it so much easier to get a hold of since other 3ds models have gone up so much in price on the secondhand market. My sister came home with a 2DS of her own that she got on a boxing day sale - $90 Canadian. Being just after Christmas, my cheap ass was hesitant to spend even that on a system I wasn't sure about... But it CAME WITH MARIO KART 7! I was sold. Then I got into Pokemon again, then Samus Returns came out, and man... I have great memories of those first few years on the 3DS "family of systems". Upgraded to the Zelda 3DS, and then the Samus Returns one... I mean... I'm not made of stone, and it's my favourite gaming franchise... And I know I'll be keeping that system until I'm cold in the ground!

Sold mine to a friend when i got a NSMB2 Gold Edition 3DS XL. We had two of these for almost 9 years, whereas the original 3DS XL that i got that same year (2015) broke later that year. The other 2DS eventually short circuited, and we had to sell it for parts. I dont regret switching, but ill always remember my time with it.

When they revealed this 2DS I thought about games that had puzzles where you solved them by closing a traditional DS - Trace Memory/Another Code, Hotel Dusk, Zelda Phantom Hourglass - and how that would be impossible on this console and that is probably why I have never bought the system.

One of those people that upgraded from 3DS XL to 2DS here: Had to get one after the 3DS' hinge broke and I'll tell you it especially with the carrying case was virtually indestructible. Served me for so long that by the time the charging port stopped working and I got a new 3DS I totally forgot what the 3D effect was like.

Love mine. Got it when it released, with Pokemon. Played maybe three games on it before leaving it on the shelf for 10 years but god damn when I came back it was right there, waiting for me in pristine condition. Life stuff happening meant I could no longer game on my PC as much but the 2DS was there and I'm going through near the entire game catalogue. Didn't appreciate it then but I do now.

The new 2DS XL really was the worst console of the entire lineup. It had neither the appeal of the 2DS (cheap, sturdy) nor the appeal of a 3DS (3D). Sure, you might say that 3D was a gimmick, but weren't the "new" additions even more of a gimmick? The only worthwhile feature the new 3DS added was face tracking for 3D, which is useless on a 2D screen.

Scott got that refurb 2DS when the Nintendo Online store was clearing them out, like I did and I also got a blue stylus. I called about it and they said red stylus ran out first, and all that were left were blue and brown. Also, another positive for 2DS is from that single pane screen underneath. The only DS model with identical color temp, contrast, etc across both screens exactly because they're not two different screens.

The 2ds had a lot going for it. Besides the fact it was cheaper it was also incredibly durable compared to the clamshell consoles with fragile hinges that always seemed to break on Nintendo consoles even if you were careful. Even after I got a 3DS- I almost never used the 3D mode and I doubt many others did either. It was also genius in that Nintendo (at least in their portable consoles) have huge libraries - it makes sense to sell a dirt cheap stripped down console, it will sell more games.

This system was perfect for parents with very little kids because it had the most damage resistance, meaning that if you dropped it there wouldn’t be a risk of breaking the dual screen hinges. It also had a complete matte casing which made it look more comfortable and less prone to scratches, and dirt and fingerprints unlike the original launch version 3DS which was glossy all over.
@matthewl54347 ай бұрын
I remember wanting a 2DS specifically because I already knew I barely used the 3D feature when my brother and I had to share a single 3DS XL, and my parents refused every time because they "didn't want to cheap out" even when I explained the 3D feature was useless to me

As someone who just got a used 2DS for $80 (which is what the 2DS used to go for new btw) I think it's the most comfortable console of the 3DS family. I will openly admit, the top screen has a small scratch, but when using the system and/or playing a game, I don't notice it. And now i can play a ton of games I missed out on.

I'm cheap when it comes to buying games/consoles, but when I spotted one of these on the Nintendo refurb store for $60 with MK7 and free shipping, I couldn't pass up the chance to see what all the 3DS hype had been about. Man I fell in love with that thing. So many nights in bed playing MK7, Mario 3D Land and random indie titles that punched above their weight. Caused me to end up buying the SNES-themed N3DSXL about a year later, which is now one of my most prized consoles. The 3DS was a great platform.
