That's an issue i recently had with Nintendo At least with the Wii U they let you use the Wii Channel and transfer your save data from Wii Consoles to Wii U Same with the NDS and 3DS And even though it sometimes deleted your save data (Most commonly on DS Games), it still gave some Warranty over the games you spent on But the Nintendo Switch? Nah you gotta wait until your game gets a remake or a Port

Probably because a lot of the games on the Wii U (some 3DS) are already on Switch, and a fair amount of the remainder of games that aren't on the Switch eShop either would require a massive overhaul, will simply not work, or the devs just don't want to bother with porting. It's not ideal, and I honestly agree there needs to be SOMETHING to preserve these games, but I don't think it's as simple as porting these games to Switch for many of the titles from Wii U and 3DS that still aren't on it.

DLC in particular is gonna be a major loss, especially on 3DS where it can only be bought through the games themselves. As an anecdote, i had to dig through my storage to find my old NSMB2 cartridge, so i could stop worrying about the DLC courses for it.

Even crazier that according to Nintendo of Europe, Fire Emblem Fates specifically is being taken off the eShop a month earlier. That one especially stings since the only way to get the full experiences of all three routes physically is with the near-impossible-to-find Special Edition that goes for $300+ online. It’s nowhere near the best FE game, but it’s a loss for preservation regardless. Also, I highly doubt that “foreseeable future” for re-downloads will be all that long. I doubt Nintendo wants anything related to the Wii U to be up much longer. Can’t wait to see how much my physical copy of Xenoblade X is gonna go for online since they refuse to port it to Switch.

I don't think this would be bad, if Nintendo gave us access to all of the eShop-only games somewhere else, you know an actual solution for folks who WANT to support these respective companies and indies OFFICIALLY. Not just Virtual Console, but there's a lot of great eShop-only games for both the N3DS and Wii U and sadly, many of them will probably never get rereleased on current consoles. The same thing happened with the original Wii when its digital storefront shut down. Same thing with the DSi Shop. Yeah, you can get some DSiWare games on the N3DS' eShop, but obviously not for long. Thank God folks online had all this stuff backed up beforehand.

I don't know if anyone knows this, but recently the Wii Shop Channel and DSi Shop were down for over 100 days. During this time you could not redownload anything that you legally purchased on your Wii or DSi while those shops were still active. They did fix it, but it obviously wasn't super important to them since they don't get money from those services anymore. They probably only brought them back to avoid lawsuits from people, since they officially said you could still redownload old games for the foreseeable future with those shops too. Digital distribution is the way of the future, and once something is no longer profitable for a company they will take it away from you. God bless homebrew and fans for keeping these things alive!

No, you have it right. I'm pretty sure there's a business strategy consisting in providing customers with fewer options to push them into buying leftover stock, a new product, etc. It's the same with these recent lackluster releases. If you give a customer too good of a game, they'll play that one game for much longer, and are less likely to grow bored and feel the urge to buy a new one to play. Practically any first party Switch release is a massive sales success and usually it's not because of content longevity and replayability. There's rarely ever something to keep people hooked in each game, so they are constantly hungry for more games. The only ones winning here are top executives who reap the profits, while customers are drained of their disposable income and developers are overworked.

I've been living on emulation since I was born in the late 90s. So this isn't a huge loss for me specifically. Because I know most if not all of those eShop titles on 3DS and Wii U, be they full games or DLCs, have already been safely archived on the internet and are freely accessible to anyone who has the will to find it. Nintendo may not like it when people emulate their games but who gives a eff anyway. I'm a huge fan of Nintendo as a game creator. Corporate-wise hell no. But that doesn't mean I still won't pirate their older catalogs that aren't accessible on modern official Nintendo hardware either.

I hate the mentality some people have with "you had all this time to get these games on the eshop." Not everyone gets into games the same time as everyone else. So many people were introduced to Atlus with Persona 5 and SMTV, and so many SMT games (Atlus games in general) are on 3ds (Europe has it worse since SMT4 is digital only there), and they're completely screwed if they didnt get or keep their 3ds. The alternative is to pay $80-100 for each of these games. Im just now playing the Phoenix wright games and they've been around since the 2000s (and I grew up with the ds and 3ds during my childhood to teen years).

Well, therein lies the issue, is that in some cases, certain content is digital even if the initial purchase was physical. Fire Emblem Fates, as was basically the chief example in the video, is a PERFECT example, because the Revelation is digital only.

The thing is that most of those games was made on Wii U and 3DS. Most of these games will be lost if Nintendo removes them completely from existence. It’s important to have game preservations. Nintendo doesn’t have the way to make theses games backwards compatible. Sony is slowly bringing their classic games to modern systems, but there PS3 games is only available through streaming. In my opinion, if I was Nintendo, I would release these games on 3DS and Wii U in physical copy with all of the DLC included so that way people will buy these games again. Nintendo would’ve made another 3DS successor which will improve its system and made the games run more better than the original. I think that Microsoft is handling backwards compatible way better than Nintendo and Sony in my opinion. If you have a physical copy of any Xbox game from the Xbox Original, Xbox 360, or Xbox One, those games could carry over to the newest hardware with better frame rate and visuals. Let’s not forget that Nintendo did close the Wii shop channel on Wii. Some games are locked away and can’t be played anymore. We haven’t see much of any more classic games added to its online service. I would want Nintendo to bring back the Virtual Console service where you could buy classic games digitally. I’m worried about what the future holds for digital games. Also live service games. What happens if a live service game gets discontinued? How would people will play these games again if they’re taking off the digital storefronts. Live service games like Fortnite, Rocket League, Apex Legends, and Fall Guys could get discontinued if there not enough player fan base. Demands for games is going to be really high because they want to play those game. It going to be their first time playing it. I’m concerned if companies decides to not preserve their games for newer audiences and existing audiences.

I hadn't thought about the drip feed being to make us play the new stuff, but I don't think it's anything that insidious at least for Nintendo. I think it and the unfinished games are both a somewhat misguided attempt to maximize publicity and maintain unending buzz about Nintendo Online or Mario Golf. Nintendo isn't expecting Mario Strikers to do Zelda or Odyssey numbers because that's never going to happen, they greenlit the game knowing this; they wouldn't stand to gain enough to withhold classic games. I'm certain it is just corporate incompetence like the whole halving one whole game into two separate versions thing. It doesn't actually help and it actually hurts games; there are better ways to incentivize trading etc in single installments and you save tons of money and there's less nonsense to prevent people from buying the game.

@@timbo303official9 But actually, the method I used to mod my 3DS did not involve the eShop at all (or an R4 card), which means 3DS modding will still be possible after March 2023, it's just you'll have to do it differently

The fact that both the Wii U and N3DS had games that were digital-only is why folks are pissed off at this. It wouldn't be too much of a problem, if these games were released on other platforms officially, but that's not the case here and I ain't just talking about Virtual Console either. There's some folks, out there that still enjoy playing both systems, myself included.
