Im a biochemist and 13 year EMT. These sensors were NOT common cheap thrrowaway equipment like they are now. It's genuinely astonishing nintendo made this for a game. Those chips are almost certainly proper ones from a real pulse oximeter. Also these things were BULKY back then. This is an amazingly miniaturized one for 98

We had an old exercise machine back then that had one. Maybe not cheap throwaway, but I wouldn't say expensive.

Nah you don’t need the complexity of a pulse ox to detect heart rate, you need several LEDs of specific wavelengths with a processing unit to do the math for a normal pulse ox For this you could totally get away with the one (just need to spot diastole/systole cycling not specific values)

I think "normal" is that the game gets more difficult as your heartrate increases, while "reverse" gets more difficult if your heartrate is low. Putting the default as "reverse" would make a lot of sense as the other would just be a positive feedback loop where you get stressed from the increase difficulty until you either lose or suffer cardiac arrest. Also considering this is JDM I kinda expect the english translation to not make much sense.

I've built a fair share of arcade cabinets, barcades, and tabletop cabinets in the past, but seeing that pump it up machine makes me want to build a full cabinet for the arcade dance pad controllers I made years ago. I'm a rhythm game addict, but for some reason I've only built a keyboard mania arcade inspired table-top cabinet...time to do a late summer project and build a complete stepmania machine... it'll be easier now with my full machine shop and workshops compared to when I was a teenager building them out of a small shed.

"one player two player tetris is tricky" yep that kinda makes sense ... wiredly. I do not think that there is a "classical" tetris game song. but it depends where one played it first. (my personal first experience was one of those portable digi games things, its got completly different sounds than tetrisfriends (as near as i can tell that is about as legitimate as it gets as it was ran by the creator of the concept), any of the itterations i ever had on Pc or any console ports i ever seen in videos.
