The switch eshop has never really evolved. The wii u eshop by comparison had frequent layout updates and kept adding new features like different background music and curated portals. It was overall much easier to not only find a specific game you want, but similar games like it. The switch eshop feels abandoned by comparison where the demands for change are met with a brick wall that hasn't been occupied since 2018.

as a developer I can almost 100% say that the eshop is just as atrocious as it is because it is a normal webpage and the switch's browser is so locked down it doesn't even have javaScript JIT that can sort of allocate resources so everything works Just in Time. No JIT on their browser means no easy way to exploit the OS through the browser, but instead of making a shop any other way they decided to use the one that is worse for their own system.

Another controversy surrounding Massage Freaks is that the female characters featured in that game turned out to be the exact name from a popular female idol group in Japan. The management handling these girls filed a complaint to the developer Qureate. Turns out one of the devs was a huge fan of this group which is why the put he named them after those members.

There are some things I like about the eShop over other console shops, namely the PS4's. Such as it taking discounts into account for price sorting (PS4 only accounts for the base price) when searching and being able to refine your searches. PS4 weirdly has filters and sorting methods, but you can't apply them to your searches for some reason. PS4 often includes things that don't even contain the words that are in what you're searching for too. Switch also has this neat thing where every publisher has a page where you can look at every game that publisher has made, which is nice for smaller publishers. But these things aside I agree, the Switch's shop is pretty horrendous

The thing I like the most about the Nintendo eShop is that it has a Wishlist function, which the PSN Store doesn't have. Sure, Steam has it as well, and probably even did it first, but it still feels like a weird thing for Sony not to include.

I've been using Nintendo's online services since 2011. Between using the 3ds & Switch eShops and Nintendo account pages, they've never really curated anything to me. The rewards program discounts always felt random, and were slow to change. The Wish List feature serves only as a bookmarking tool. Their emails and system notifications have never told me when any game on my lists went on sale, and any special offers to me were never based on that list. What I think is called the "Just for You" page was just used when I redeemed a specific download code. And the "recommended for me" store page felt just as random as anything.

You haven't gotten an e-mail when a wishlisted item went on sale? I'll admit, I didn't start getting those e-mails until I had a Switch and items wishlisted in its eShop, but I get them moderately reliably. Sure, not every game from my wishlist that goes on sale I get an e-mail notice for, but most of them I do. Now, I somewhat understand you regarding the recommendations from Nintendo's eShops. On the Switch it frequently recommends games that I bought the physical copy of, when they're a game that I'd play, and luckily enough they've usually been relevant. Still, as I've usually collected the Gold Coins for that physical copy days, if not weeks, before the game gets recommended to me they rarely feel meaningful.

One thing that you guys didn't bring up and it bothers me slighty is that there is still no music in the eShop! Sure it's not THAT big of a deal, but back in the 3DS/WiiU days, they always had some kind of catchy music in there that made shopping more fun and engaging. They also composed new songs for it every couple of months as well to keep the experience fresh. The current eShop is just plain, boring and completely devoid of any kind of personality. The flat smartphone UI and the constant lag doesn't help with it either A failing "Switch 2" would be the Ultimate Reality-Check for Nintendo, as this time there wouldn't be a Game Boy or 3DS-type of system to fall back on financially if it ends up selling like dogshit

Even when I was a kid during the Wii Era, the Nintendo seal meant something. Yeah, the Wii eshop had its couple of weird games, but for the most part, at least the games worked (despite questionable quality). But now, between online game downloads being more prominent and the weird games being even weirder, the Seal means absolutely nothing.

The sad thing and it's very simple as mentioned Nintendo realized they can just simply be incredibly lazy and not do anything and people will still buy off their store. I expect nothing from Nintendo until they get humbled and unfortunately I just don't see that happening anytime soon. I don't think we'll see another Wii U type situation again so what that means most likely at best will maybe see the store silently get fixed when they feel like getting around to it. My expectations are as low as they could possibly be when it comes to Nintendo. I don't expect them to vastly improve their online infrastructure and I don't expect them to overhaul the store. Could that happen yes, will it happen my bet would be no. Not for the foreseeable future at least and who knows when, eventually I'm sure but like I said when they feel like getting around to it they're in no rush obviously.

I check the eshop every other day a day never miss what new games are coming out. The only issues I have with the shop is how slow it gets and all the shovelware it gets but all platforms get shovelware. You not knowing when a new game released is on the person not the shop. I only check the psn shop every couple of months and I have to dig and dig to find releases so I don't see how that is any different.

The 3DS and Wii U eShops were far more organized and had much better crowd control on Nintendo's part. The UI still has the Nintendo charm that went away once the Switch came out, the menus for Wii U and 3DS have tabs that organize games by content be it games that have DLC, games with playable demos, Virtual Console, Games at low or affordable prices (which usually includes shovelware titles with the games that are actually good including DSiware titles), series specific games or even applications that serve as a relic of the past when Nintendo tried making the DSi a cheaper mobile device on top of being a portable game system. The music on Wii U and 3DS are boppin' tunes and the Wii U eShop even had tracks from other Nintendo games that would play during some months. And each time you searched for something you had the banners on the 3DS' top screen that could either be just a simple PNG with the game's logo or could be a multilayered PNG showing off the 3DS' 3D effects. Just so much charm and personality vanished once the Switch came out.

Web developer here. I highly doubt it's a server issue. It's most likely a client side issue - as in the web browser that Nintendo put on the Switch and how the web app was designed. While we know little about the browser on the Switch, we do know it's based on WebKit, just like Safari and Chromium (well, Chrome forked it, but whatever) - just as it was on previous Nintendo consoles. And they were all slow and garbage. Starting to see the consistency? I mean, we could easily prove this if Nintendo allowed us to use the Switches web browser to see if it also sucks for many other sites, but they don't - oh well. Nintendo should just not make/customize their own web browser. They aren't great at it. Instead, they should be using an open source browser (ie. Chromium or Firefox), but most likely that will never happen, because now they have to maintain it for security vulnerabilities (often used to install homebrew software on their consoles). They would much rather have an obscure locked down browser - a technique called "security by obscurity" (which isn't really security anyways, which is most likely why they don't allow you to use the browser on the Switch).

The only good thing about the eshop is that you can get access to the Japanese shop with a Japanese account on an English switch….that’s it. Like it lags through the Japanese shop through this method, but hey….I got a fun fishing game and cooking battle game out of it (yes, they exist, and bandai namco made both of them)

Seeing the description for Massage Freaks really made me laugh out loud. But on a more serious note: Yes, the Nintendo eShop is garbage compared to the shops on Xbox and PS5. But do consider that all of Nintendo’s attempts to do online services have been garbage because all the top decision makers make said decisions based on outdated mindsets. Satoru Iwata dismissed online gaming as a fad during the GameCube days. If Nintendo’s not going to spend more money to use more powerful tech for their consoles, you have to bet they’re not going to spend more money to revise their online services because they don’t consider it important enough to warrant it.

I remember when the switch came out and I was using the eshop and it was so slow and laggy and would get worse the longer I was on it. In my head I was like, “this is all new, it will get better”. I was wrong, it’s still horrible. Lol.

Yeah, the Nintendo 3DS eshop is way better! BTW if you're looking for a good beat-em-up type game on the Nintendo Switch then check out "Tunche" and "River City Girls". Also, the Nintendo Switch doesn't have a rating system. Adding a rating system would solve a lot of problems! Oh, and Nintendo allows almost all adult games with nudity as long as such nudity is only the top half of the body. The bottom half must always be censored and TBH that's fair. Some games that are supposed to have nudity are banned though for featuring characters that appear to be under the age of 18 (even if such characters are older than that) which is also fair.

Not to mention the store *STILL* lacks a shopping cart feature meaning you have to buy games one at a time, it frequently reloads the storepage at the worst possible time and it crashes frequently. Although, from my experience, the PSN store is worse because it's actually hardcrashed my console just from using the store too often... twice! Not crashed to the "desktop", but it overloaded the console so hard that it froze it for several seconds and hardbooted the system. The storefronts for consoles are horrible no matter the system.

Well, although I agree that the Switch's eShop needs some improvements you did fail to make mention of the one thing they did do right. It does have a Wishlist feature. Nintendo has had this feature nearly since they created any eShop for one of their consoles, but Sony has yet to add it to the PSN Store. For all the rest of the things that work to differing degrees between them that is an extremely valuable and useful feature. Beyond that, yeah I agree with your points on there.

PSN does have a wishlist feature but only on PS5 and thier website, don't know why it isnt on PS4 though.

As that is how the vast majority of people have been accessing the PSN Store for over a decade, along side the PS4's store, that is the place that matters. Especially if said wishlist can't be accessed from the console stores then having it on the website is extra meaningless.
