Ya know if you take the knowledge of bee genders, and a few more human concepts that don't really apply, it really make the bee movie so much funnier and way better imo. Barry's parents are a gay couple. All of the super masculine worker bees that Barry works with are much more akin to biker lesbians than military dudes, Barry is effectively trans since they were effectively a drone and became a worker bee, and that one chick Barry gets with was so dissatisfied with her boyfriend that she'd rather be in a lesbian relationship with a BEE than be with him. 😆

I'm a beekeeper and I agree entirely with that section of the vid you had about them. Apis mellifera (Western Honey Bee) are literal EnBees! Honey bees themselves consider the entire hive of hundreds of thousands of individuals to be ONE organism. They have a real, literal, functional democracy where the entire hive casts and take votes on important issues instantaneously using pheromones and sense of smell. There is no actual hierarchy between them. What we called the "queen" is just the one fertile egg-layer who is doing a part for the whole -- just like the family member that's helping keep them fed while they lay eggs. Just like all the ones caring for their little ones, or the ones bringing in the food, or the ones going out to mate and help make new hives. Some of them are fertile if that's their job. Most of them are not because they don't need to be. They're one organism. Every bee is cared for from birth to death. "Work" is them flying around and throwing themselves into piles of food before going home to their loved ones who do in fact care for you. Bees also know who "their" humans are same as other domestic animals do and usually will just sit on you and watch while you do whatever you need to do with their hive. You can tell from the pitch of their hum how they're feeling about what you're doing. Every hive has it's own personality. A hive that has a bad personality and tends to attack immediately is a sick and distressed hive. Humans could learn a lot about civility from bees. I wholeheartedly support using honey bees as NB mascots. 🥰

About the bee genders being worker, drone, and queen. The term "queen" is still a misnomer based on projection of human hierarchal structures onto an insect species that does not share them. The queen is less analogous to a human monarch, and more akin to a brood mare, who is completely at the mercy of the workers. If the workers don't like the brood mare, they'll have her replaced. The drones are pretty much helpless too, as they can't forage and they can't sting, and only exist to serve one purpose. Bees are a eusocial species, and the workers are the ones actually in charge of the colony.

Bee fact I learned last night: Bees WILL physically warn you if they feel threatened or annoyed by your presence. If a bee feels like they want you to back off, they will raise one or more of their little legs straight up, or straight out in your direction. It may look like they want a high five, but take this more as a gesture of someone holding their palm up at you, and saying "Please give me some space." If this happens, simply move back a bit and let the bee have some more room so they can continue being a hard worker!

Hello, fellow human! Are you better now? Also, try not to worry too much about knowing what genders are. They aren't fixed things one can objectively know: rather, they are names we give to ways with which our brains interact with society's expectations (which are HIGHLY context-dependent and change all the time).
@bow-tiedengineer44532 жыл бұрын
@@enbyarchmage mostly better, still have a sore throat, but I no longer feel like my face is going to explode. I guess on the understanding thing, my brain is still looking for concrete categories and consistent definitions for everything, even though I realize most of the stuff is a gradient. Mostly, I'm just grateful to have realized that, despite exclusively being called a boy or a man for the first 18 years of my life, maleness is more than just those few (mostly physical) things that I share with my more masculine peers, and that it's up to me to decide what I am. The only thing I really still struggle with at all is neopronouns, not that I think they are bad, just that I keep wondering what actual information they convey that is different to they/them, other than being more unusual, and what the practical difference is between various neopronouns. All this confusion is mostly academic, though, I've finally internalized the important bit of if someone decides they want a different name or different pronouns, take them at their word, and adjust your perception of them as quickly as you can. I've also been letting myself get back into the long hair and hairclips I had back in second grade, before I was bribed/peer pressured by my extended family into getting my hair cut shorter. I still ended up growing it out again medium long, but until recently, I hadn't grown it out long enough for a hair clip since, and I definitely prefer it this way. I mean, that's more gender norms than gender, but still. Living in semi-rural America, I have had very few examples in my life of people who didn't conform to gender stereotypes, the gender binary, and heteronormative culture, and until I found OT, the few trans people I interacted with regularly were alien to me. I was better than most ignorant people, doing my best to respect their identity and use their preferred pronouns and new names, but I couldn't understand them until I learned about gender dysphoria and euphoria, and then realized that what I hadn't understood was gender itself, because I was operating under the false assumption of my own maleness. I'm just really glad to have found this community so I could finally learn the truth, even if It took me until after I was officially an adult to do so.
@enbyarchmage2 жыл бұрын
@@bow-tiedengineer4453 Great to know that you're better 😁 Regarding the neopronoun thing, they really are basically the same thing as they/them, from a practical perspective. Just like you suspected, they're used mostly for the aesthetics, at least as far as I know. I can kinda relate to that, bc in my native language (Portuguese) there are two main gender-neutral pronouns - "elu" and "ile" - and they are all neopronouns. I prefer the second one, for some reason, even though the first doesn't exactly bother me. One more thing: are you neurodivergent (Autistic, ADHDer...) etc.? The fact that you struggle to understand the very idea of gender, as well as the very high level of detail with which you write, are typical neurodivergent traits. I'm asking bc I'm Autistic/ADHDer myself, and I LOVE talking to other neurodivergent people, for at least two reasons: a) we usually can understand each other's quirks and struggles better than most neurotypicals will ever be able to; b) neurodivergent people often love sharing detailed information about their lives and/or special interests (like you did), so talking with an Atypical person is rarely boring, if one manages to engage in a meaningful conversation with them.

If you lost them while you are going through a rough patch, _then they were never your friends to begin with._ Real friends stand by you, good times and bad. Remember: PTSD is a severe wound. Doesn't matter that it's not physical, it's still a severe wound, and like any severe wound, requires acute care. You _deserve_ to get that care. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot talking out of their ass. I look at it this way: PTSD is the mind-equivalent of _your Achilles Tendon being cut._ If that happens to someone, they not only can't walk around on the leg with the severed Achilles Tendon, _they can't walk at all._ Getting the Achilles Tendon repaired requires _long term acute care_ … and that's just to get it reattached. Once the body has finished reconnecting the break in the Achilles Tendon, they're still not healed. They'll have to go through physical therapy to regain full range of mobility in the leg that had the damaged Achilles Tendon. And doing that physical therapy is _unpleasant hard work, with _*_no_*_ shortcuts._ Only once PT is done can they say that they're fully healed. And I'm not just saying this: One of the faculty when I was in college tore his Achilles Tendon the year before I started. He wasn't fully healed until I graduated, so 5 years later. I actually thought he had had polio as a child [I started college in 1987, so this was still a possibility for people 20+ years older than me]. Then, about 10 years ago, _I sprained_ my Achilles Tendon. I was hobbling around on a cane for 2 months, then had to do 3 months of physical therapy. And PT hurt, not excruciatingly, but it ached. Most people don't push themselves enough, in order to avoid any pain whatsoever, causing the physical therapy to take much, much longer. Like I said, I look at PTSD as the mind-equivalent of _your Achilles Tendon snapping._ You not only will _need acute care_ to function at the most basic day-to-day level once again, _YOU ARE ENTITLED to that ACUTE CARE!!!_ And after that acute-care that gets you at least functioning, you'll still need the therapy to actually fully-heal. And it's gonna be work, and it's gonna hurt sometimes, but never excruciatingly and never for long. I have my own mental-health issues, and needed therapy to recover and heal. I remember two things: (1) The only way Out, is Through; (2) You have to go through the pain, _but you don't have to go through it alone._ A good therapist is there to help you with both. I wish you Recovery, Health, Wellness, and Wholeness. 🤗

@@John_Weiss Thank you so much. I think I'm getting a therapist in two days, so hopefully everything will start to get better. I'm also hoping to get a psychiatric assistance/service dog. Mainly because I litteraly can't be alone in public without a severe panic attack. But it's apparently quite hard to get a service dog for PTSD caused by childhood trauma. I did find a great community of self trained service dogs and handlers that can help though. I just need to get a medical referral though, then I need to get money.. it's quite expensive to get a good dog, then to train them too. Sorry, I'm info dumping- lol. I'm autistic. I like to talk alot, but at the same time, I can't talk half the time. it's funny. Kinda..

I am learning how to be a bee keeper at the moment so I thought I would share some bonus bee facts: In a hive that looses a queen the "female" workers can sometimes start laying haploid eggs that develop into "male" drones. The pheromones released by a queen usually suppress this urge. Though usually (if fertile eggs are present from old queen) new queen cells will be constructed and the chosen ones will be fed royal jelly so they develop into new queens. Workers get very antsy without a queen. New queens leave the hive after emerging to have their nuptial flight. During this time they will ideally mate with multiple drones from multiple different hives. This is the only time that they will mate and they store the sperm and use it to fertilize "female" workers and queen eggs over the the remaining years of their lives. They have a flap that they use to control the release of the stored sperm allowing them to decide when to lay haploid drone eggs. The queen determine the temperament of the hive. If you have a super "aggressive"/defensive hive and you swap the queen out with a calm one then the workers very swiftly change their temperament. Daughter queens tend to take after their mothers when it comes to hive temperament so there is a genetic component. Bonus bonus fact. Drones (males) are incapable of stinging as a bee (also wasp) sting is a modified ovipositor (egg laying apparatus). In a healthy hive, drones are usually only present in the late spring and summer and their only purpose is to fertilize young queens. If a hive is stressed (for instance prolonged rain) then drones are the first to be evicted from the hive. Drones can't look after themselves in the long term and usually die shortly after. Bees in a hive feed one another to bond. I have watched workers pestering each other for food even though they could easily visit the store themselves.

Rewatching OT's videos makes me so happy whenever my own gender is turning from silly goose to unknowable being to void. Thanks for being you, dude.

I got top surgery last month and my friends have been making a lot of jokes (because I had my nipples removed during it) and it's been great.

Ok but we could also perceive Jim taking back the statement as Garfield being xtm (intersex to male) transgender
