Awesome review! I chose my Xterra for the following reason: rugged outdoors purpose. As you highlighted it has a roof rack with storage bin for wet/muddy/dirty items, side steps on rear bumper, towing capacity, interior that can be easily wiped down, versatile rear storage with tie downs (you can purchase a Nissan storage/organizer bin for the trunk that integrates with the tie downs so it doesn't move, the rear hatch has a built in first aid kit which is missing in the Xterra featured in your video. My Xterra is a 2015 Pro 4X model which came stock with a rear locker and upgraded suspension from factory. Xterras also came in a 6 speed manual transmission as an option. Other than that it is a pretty straightforward, simple, utilitarian design with rugged outdoors good looks!

I've had my Xterra for over 10 years now. Here's a list of problems I've had to watch out for. Slowly losing rear axle fluid that I have to keep an eye on, making sure the fluid level is up. Drive shaft bearings that have worn out quickly causing a vibration there a couple of times. Blower motor ceasing up causing the fan speed resistor block to blow out. Driver's side window winder motor quiting. Both of those I've had success bringing them back to life by tearing the motors apart and cleaning them out but it's easier to just replace them. I took them apart to see if I could even though they aren't made to be taken apart. Thye're made to be thrown out and replaced. I've had the radiator replaced and bypassed the transmission/radiator deadly mix potential. (That's probably the reason so few Xterras are on the road now after suffering deadly mixing of fluids) Brake calipers ceasing up. Rear springs breaking, mainly from hauling a trailer over very rough roads. I don't put it in 4wheel drive much, but when it's in 4x4 mode, it's a beast at moving around. Dialing in and out of 4x4 mode you have to watch the dash to make sure it is in or out of 4x4 mode because just turning the dial doesn't always make it happen right away, it may take 2 or 3 attempts. Changing the sparkplugs is a real pain as you have to take way more of the top of the engine covering components off than you really should have to just to do a simple job like that. A "bearing" split in the steering column that is non replaceable so you end up getting an entire steering assembly just because of a simple plastic bearing case breaking... in that situation the entire steering column becomes loose/wobbling but still works. Things I especially like are the way the rear seats can fold flat so I have a large open storage area in the back. I like the roof rack for carrying a canoe. I have a 3000lb trailer and the Xterra hauls it around very nicely on the highway and the shortish wheelbase on the Xterra I find helps manouver the trailer around easily. There's very good visibilty all around as you're driving. Gas mileage could be a bit better, but as long as I'm around 60mph on the highway it's OK gas mileage. Having a heavy foot and accelerating quickly is fun but you really pay for it when you go to the pumps if you drive like that with the Xterra. Mine is a 2006 and it still has most of the original exhaust. Motor still runs great. Burns maybe a quart of oil between changes but that's expected.

We've had our 2015 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X for going on 3 years and we absolutely love it. We've never had a single problem with it and it handles amazingly well in the snow. Ours came fully loaded with the heated leather seats, navigation, backup camera, Sirius/XM radio, Bluetooth, towing package, the whole nine. We just hit 100k miles on it and it's going in for a tune up next week. This is, hands down, the best SUV we've ever owned. Prior to buying our Xterra, we had a 2010 Jeep Commander Limited that we bought new, which we loved, but it was starting to have a few issues by the time we traded it for our Xterra. I would buy another Xterra in a heartbeat, although we are currently looking for a slightly older Titan or Frontier to have as kind of a "work truck" for hauling materials when we're doing projects on our house and things of that nature. Plus, my husband would love to have another pickup. It's been about 8 or 9 years since we last had one.

I've owned my 2013 Xrerra for 9 years. It is the most reliable rig I've ever owned. It has 114,000 miles on it. I drove the last 70k. My total repairs have been less than $50! Mostly highway driving, often with a trailer but I've also used it on jeep trails, in heavy snow and other rough terrain. It's never failed me yet.

I was in the market for that same group of rugged off road SUVs that you mentioned. I wanted to pay cash and wanted something preferably low mileage and one owner. Stumbled across a clean Xterra that fit that criteria before finding any of the others. 2 years and 60k more miles (140k total) later, I have not been nice to it, I haven’t let it take a break, I have beaten it down, bruised it, and it has never ever failed me. It lived the first half of its mileage with an older couple who serviced it meticulously, and is spending the rest of it with me. Given the deals you can get on these I can’t see why you’d pick any of the others over it. One of my good friends has a 2020 T4R TRD Pro, fantastic rig, super nice, but it’s kind of anemic. I feel the Jeep is the same way. The 4.0 in the Nissan is no joke. Yeah it was around for 15 years but it’s got one hell of a punch for what it is.

I might be in the market for an Xterra. A manual transmission is non-negotiable for me. The last time 4runner had one was in 2000, so immediately 4runner is out of the game. I would not trust the reliability of a Jeep, so that leaves the Xterra.

About 5 years ago I bought a 2012 Pro-4X Xterra with a 6 speed manual transmission. It is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It fits me better than the alternatives, including Jeep and Toyota, and has been really reliable, only replaced the battery, a new set of tires, and I did have a thermostat go bad (simple fix). I am trying to keep mine in good shape because I like it so much and they are not made any more. I am soon to replace the shocks and will again go with the Bilstein 4600s that are stock on the Pro-4X. I have had a full size GMC pickup, an original Land Cruiser FJ40, and 3 Jeeps. (an old Wagoneer, a Cherokee, and a Liberty) in the past. The Liberty just died on me one day. It apparently dropped a valve seat out of the blue. Got rid of it then and have not considered Jeep since.

@@RagingBad IMO, better because more updated off-road features such as A-TRAC (more aggressive than Xterra's ABLS), crawl control, and multi terrain select. I like that it has coil springs in the rear, rather than leaf, which improves wheel travel. I honestly don't think the side clearance for the Xterra is that good. I'll type ya' a thing or three that nobody cares about. Last summer (June 2020) I found a 2015 Xterra Pro-4x (automatic) with less than 30,000 miles on it. I noticed it had been sitting on the lot for damn near 2 months, however, it was RIGHT in the middle of COVID. It had been lifted, tinted windows, steel front and rear bumpers, rear spare tire carrier, I'm guessing it was sitting on 33's. It was for sale at a Subaru dealership for $25,000. CarFax was clean, though I've subsequently learned that CarFax doesn't mean dick. Test drove it. Fell in love. This seemed like I was (for all intents and purposes) getting a 'new' vehicle for $25,000. Dealer insisted I leave a deposit, before even discussing price. I had scheduled to have a Nissan dealership do a pre-purchase inspection. Before the inspection could be done, the dealership called to tell me that they had sold the vehicle online to someone in Houston, TX. Sounded like bullshit. They refunded my deposit. "So what?" Ended up buying a stock 2012 Pathfinder in July 2020 with 135,000 (what appears to be highway) miles on it, for about 1/3 of what I would have spent on the Xterra. There is no "off-roading" to speak of in the state where I live. I just like a rugged-looking mall crawler. So far, I LOVE the Pathfinder. Even though I would most likely never use them, it would be great if Nissan still sold a truck in North America that had locking differentials, skid plates, crawl control, etc.....................for those high curbs at Starbucks. If "money was no object" (which it always is for working-class people), I would have wanted a Toyota Sequoia, only because I had rented one for a long weekend and loved EVERYTHING about it, including its powerful V-8. That being typed, I think that Nissan Xterra's, R51 Pathfinder's, and Armada's are great values in vehicles. Nissan's VQ series engines can compete with any non-exotic and while Toyota is king in terms of the combination of reliability, durability, and off-road prowess, Nissan's trucks are a great alternative for avoiding the 'Toyota tax.' I like the look of Jeep Wrangler's and recent Grand Cherokee's however, whenever I read any "owner reviews", Jeep's quality control seems too inconsistent for my money. Also, I am a HUGE fan of the 'old-school'~'dated' interiors, analog guages, etc. in those 2012-2015 vintage Xterra's, Pathfinder's, Armada's, 4Runner's, and Sequoia's.

So this what I found through my experiences over the years: Jeep: rugged looks, ok interior but bad reliability. (Very, very bad) there saving grace is they are light so off road wise is an ok choice. Toyota: tighter interior, car like almost. Most reliable option. So rugged external looks but interior can be lacking. Nissan: the jack of all trades. Ok durability inside and out. Mostly reliable (there was a few that gave some problems to my customers). But overall awesome choice. Mitsubishi: good choice but not quite as reliable as the Nissans and Toyotas. I mean I was doing 45 approaching Stop and noooo brakes. So I kinda lost faith in Toyo. I came back around after driving a Mustang GT a few years as a daily to looking for either a 4runner or FJ...yeahhh I still liked the Toyo's. Then I ran across a 2015 Xterra Pro4x with under 70k miles for 19k bucks. I did some digging and found absolutely no recalls on that year. I got it...like it ...had it off road on a few mild trails and gotta say it drives as good off road as it does off road. Read that it handled rough on highway...but I don't think so at all. Great handling vehicle. Gas mileage is mehhhh but its not a deal killer...added an AEM Filter to it which helped eco by almost 2 mpg more. Sooooo, I have to say its a gooood option where you dont have to pay the Toyo tax. If you want a Trail Edition 4runner , give the Pro4x X a look.

My xterra had that issue aka SMOD. It happened around 100k on mine, did a complete flush, replaced radiator and 5yr & 100k miles later (210k now) the xterra drives perfect. Mine is a 2005.

@@RagingBad I believe it was solved with the 2009 or 2010 models. Google SMOD years for Xterra.
